BRAZIL, Mato Grosso, Ribeirão Cascalheira (base camp of the Xavantina-Cachimbo Expedition), A.G.A Mathews, 2.xii.1967, holotype soldier (part of lot MZSP- 7398) and paratypes (MZSP- 7398, BMNH- 133977 and AMNH). Another 120 samples from several different localities, including new ones from the type locality.

Remarks. Mathews (1977) placed this species in Diversitermes based on its “niche (in rotten wood and old mounds of other species)”. However, this ecological delimitation is incorrect as both genera include species with diverse habits. All diagnostic morphological characters support its inclusion in Velocitermes: long legs and antennae, head of the major soldier constricted, and gut morphology.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038C87C09F1A3672CF83F9F3698B23FA	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Head capsule elliptic in dorsal view, covered with numerous long hairs. Left mandible: cutting edge between M1 and M3 sinuous; M4 partially visible in the gap between M3 and MPr; tip hidden behind MPr; A and M1 about the same size in both mandibles. Right mandible: posterior margin of A, M1, and M2 about the same length; molar plate narrow (width about 2/5 its length), concave, irregularly shaped, with 6–7 transverse ridges; proximal ridge large and tooth-like, separated from the rest by a gap and orientated at an angle of about 45° relative to the other ridges; basal notch strongly developed, nearly a right angle. Fontanelle spot large and conspicuous, Yshaped, yellowish or light brown. Eyes medium-sized; ocelli well separated from eyes. Antenna with 15 articles. Head, pronotum, tergites and sternites covered with dense hairs and sparse bristles. Wings with short hairs on surface, more numerous on costal border and on apical region. Wings densely covered with asteroid micrasters on entire surface, and papilae on anterior and posterior margins (Figs. 3 D–3F; also described by Roonwal et al. 1981). Each tibia with two apical spurs.

Soldier (Figs. 4–6). Trimorphic. Nasus subcylindrical. Vestigial mandibles with distinct points. Antenna with 12–14 articles. Tibial spurs 2:2:2. Major soldier. Head capsule proportionally wide, elliptic or subrectangular, without constriction behind antennae. Top of head convex in profile. Pronotum approximately half the width of head. Femur with sparse hairs and a few bristles on inner margin; tibiae with numerous hairs, denser on distal region. Head capsule with two bristles on vertex and four bristles at the base of nasus, and numerous microscopic hairs (Fig. 7 A, B, C, D). Nasus covered with dense short hairs and 4 longer ones at tip. Thorax and abdomen densely covered with microscopic hairs. Pronotum with 2–4 bristles on anterior margin; meso- and metanotum without bristles. Intermediate soldier. Head capsule in dorsal view with nearly parallel or slightly converging sides, and a moderate constriction near the middle. Pronotum approximately 2/3 the width of head. Top of head in profile slightly elevated behind antennae; nasus oriented anteriorly or slightly upturned. Pilosity similar to major soldier. Minor soldier. Head with a moderate to conspicuous constriction behind antennae; sides converging anteriorly. Pronotum approximately 2/3 the width of head. Latera head profile similar to intermediate soldier but with proportionally longer nasus. Head capsule with microscopic hairs similar to those of major soldier; nasus with scattered microscopic hairs and dense short hairs only on apical quarter.

Workers (Fig. 8–9). Dimorphic. Head elliptic in dorsal view. Epicranial suture distinct. Legs and antennae short. Antennae with 14–15 articles; 3rd article sometimes incompletely divided. Pronotum with a few bristles on anterior margin and short hairs on posterior margin. Meso- and metanotum without bristles and with short hairs on posterior margin. Tergites with short hairs on surface and a row of bristles on posterior margin. Mandibles similar to those of imago, except for the wider molar plate (Figs. 7 E, F). Two types of major workers workers are present. Type I with narrow pronotum and left mandible with a narrow gap between M3 and MPr; apical tooth shorter than M1; angle between A and M1 narrow; left mandible index 0.35–0.45 (Fig. 9 B, E, H). Type II: slightly larger than type I, with wider pronotum; left mandible with a wide gap between M3 and MPr; apical tooth about the same length as M1; angle between A and M1 wider; left mandible index 0.45–0.5 (Fig. 9 C, F, I). Minor workers rare, conspicuously smaller, with mandibles similar to those of major workers of type I (Fig. 9 A, D, G).

Gut morphology (Figs. 10–11). Gizzard and mesenteron of moderate size. Mixed segment very short. Malpighian tubules attached to the gut in two very close pairs near the junction of mesenteron and proctodeum, sometimes with a mesenteric swelling at the point of attachment. First proctodeal segment (P1) short and narrower than mesenteron, strongly curved near the enteric valve. Enteric valve conical and narrow; armature weak and divided into two rings (Fig. 11 B). First ring extending into P1 and comprised of 6 elongate plates, weakly sclerotized, covered with small spines. Second ring located entirely in P2, comprised of 3 small plates alternating with 3 larger ones; small plates more elongate, finger-like, with 3–6 spines; larger plates wider and with 6 or more spines. Enteric valve short, conical, located posteriorly and inserted into a pouch of P3 (enteric valve seating) at the dorsal left or dorsal center side. P3 with an enteric valve seating, not lobed, attached to the rest of P3 by a strong annular sphincter.

Comparisons. Among all genera of Nasutitermitinae, only Diversitermes, Velocitermes, and Muelleritermes have trimorphic soldiers. The major soldier of Velocitermes has a constricted head, while in Diversitermes the head capsule of the major soldier is pear-shaped or elliptic, without a constriction. Soldiers of Muelleritermes have dense short hairs on head capsule while in Diversitermes they have microscopic hairs only. The head capsule of the intermediate soldier of Muelleritermes is not constricted. Workers of Muelleritermes are pale colored, with unpigmented heads. Workers of Diversitermes can be recognized by the strong annular sphincter between enteric valve seating and the rest of P3, by the Malpighian tubules attached to mesenteron in two pairs separated by a short distance, sometimes on a small mesenteric swelling. Imagoes are similar to those of Velocitermes and Muelleritermes .

Remarks. We do not have detailed information on the caste system of Diversitermes, but it is likely similar to that of Velocitermes spp. (Haifig et al. 2012 and our own unpublished data). In V. heteropterus, large (major) workers are female of at least two instars: 3rd (similar to type I of Diversitermes) and 4th (similar to type II of Diversitermes). Minor workers are male and become soldiers.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038C87C09F193675CF83FAB7695E21CF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Head capsule brown, paler near postclypeus, eyes and antennal sockets. Postclypeus yellow brown; midline darker. Labrum yellowish, hyaline. Frontal marks inconspicuous. Ecdysial line inconspicuous. Antenna yellow brown. Pronotum yellow brown. Mesonotum yellow brown. Metanotum yellow brown. Legs yellow. Tergites and sternites yellow brown. Wings brownish, hyaline; anterior veins darker. Head capsule densely covered with short inclined hairs and 6–10 short bristles. Postclypeus with numerous hairs, less dense than on head capsule. Labrum with about 10 bristles and many short hairs. Pronotum densely covered with hairs, more numerous near margins. Tergites and sternites densely covered with decumbent hairs, with a row of bristles on posterior margin and another irregular and shorter line of bristles near middle. Wings with short hairs on surface; anterior margin with longer hairs. Head capsule oval, with slightly angular posterior corners. Fontanelle conspicuous, Y-shaped. Eye nearly circular, medium-sized, distance to lower margin of head about 1/6 its diameter. Ocelli oval, large and prominent, separated from eye by about half their width. Postclypeus inflated; anterior margin nearly straight; posterior margin convex. Pronotum with anterior margin nearly straight, slightly emarginate; sides convex converging posteriorly. Posterior margin of meso- and metanotum broadly V-shaped; posterior points roughly rounded, irregular. Wing microsculpturing: margins and veins with pointed papillae; membrane covered with dense asteroid micrasters (6–8 points). Antenna with 15 articles: 3>6>5=4=2. Measurements in Table 1.

Major soldier (Figs. 4 D–I; 7C–D). Head brown; basal ¾ of nasus very dark brown, apex light brown. Articles 1–2 of antenna yellow brown; other articles light brown, with a marked contrast between articles 2 and 3. Thoracic nota and legs yellow brown. Tergites yellowish, paler than thoracic nota. Sternites paler than tergites. Head capsule with 2 bristles on vertex and 4 at base of nasus, and numerous microscopic hairs. Nasus densely covered with short inclined hairs, and 4 longer ones at tip. Pronotum with 0–2 bristles on anterior margin and with sparse microscopic hairs on surface. Meso- and metanotum without bristles. Tergites with 4–6 bristles on posterior margin and many microscopic hairs on surface. Sternites densely covered with inclined hairs and with a row of 6–10 bristles on posterior margin. Head capsule pear-shaped, with strongly convex sides. Nasus usually short, narrow and subcylindrical. Line of top of head with nasus concave in profile. Antenna with 13 articles: 3>2>6>5>4; 3rd article about as long as 1st and about twice as long as second. Measurements in Table 2.

Intermediate soldier (Fig. 5 D–F). Coloration, chaetotaxy and antennae similar to those of major soldier; head capsule lighter colored. Smaller and with a distinct constriction behind antennae. Nasus shorter, slightly upturned and dilated near apex. Measurements in Table 3.

Minor soldier (Fig. 6 D–I). Coloration lighter than in intermediate and major soldiers. Head capsule wider posteriorly; with distinct constriction behind antennae. Top of head in profile with convex elevation between constriction and nasus. Nasus upturned, dilated near apex and with fewer hairs than in intermediate and major soldiers. Antennal articles: 6>5=3>2>4. Measurements in Table 4.

Worker (Figs. 8 C–D; 9D–F; 10H–O; 11D). Head capsule yellow to brownish yellow. Epicranial suture and fontanelle spot conspicuous. Antennae, thorax, legs, tergites and sternites yellowish, unpigmented. Head capsule with scattered bristles and hairs. Pronotum with 2–6 bristles on anterior lobe and sparse short hairs. Meso- and metanota with a few short hairs, without bristles. Tergites with a row of bristles on posterior margin and sparse short hairs on surface. Antenna with 14 articles. Measurement in Tables 5 and 6.

Comparisons. See comparisons under D. tiapuan, sp. n.

Distribution. Diversitermes diversimiles occurs in a large region, including parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina, mainly in forest habitats (Fig. 13). It is apparently rare in the Amazon region.

Remarks. According to Krishna et al. (2013: 1569), the type series of Eutermes strelnicovi includes imagoes of Subulitermes microsoma (Silvestri 1903) and minor soldiers of Diversitermes castaniceps . John (1920) did not designate a holotype and the location of the syntypes is unknown. However, the soldier shown in John's illustration (his Fig. 3) matches the minor soldier of D. diversimiles, not D. castaniceps . Also, the type locality of E. strelnicovi (Brazil: Mato Grosso: São Domingos) is out of the geographic range of both D. castaniceps and D. tiapuan, sp. n.

Etymology. The name “ diversimiles ” is derived from the Latin words “diversus” (diverse) and “miles” (soldier), and refers to the polymorphic soldiers. The spelling “ diversimilis ” used by several authors (e.g. Snyder 1949) is incorrect.

Type material examined. Lectotype, here designated: major soldier (AMNH), collected by F. Silvestri, x.1900. Type-locality: PARAGUAY: Paraguarí (lat 25.633°S, long 57.15°W) . Paralectotypes: soldiers, workers, imagoes, same data as lectotype (AMNH, and in Silvestri's collection at the Instituto di Entomologia Agraria, Portici, Italy). Specimens from other localities mentioned by Silvestri (1903: 91) are not paralectotypes because Silvestri (1901: 7) mentions only the specimens from Paraguari. Raineri et al. (1992) list specimens from Villarica, Paraguay as “Typi” (types) of D. diversimiles . However, these specimens were not mentioned in the original description and were not syntypes .

Other material examined. ARGENTINA: Chaco: 14.xii.2000, F. From the Asurini language of Tocantins: tĩapwã, pointed nose, which refers to the long, cylindrical nasus of the soldiers.

Imago (Figs. 1 I–1L, 2C, 2F, 3C, 3F). Head capsule dark brown. Postclypeus light brown; midline darker. Labrum yellow brown, hyaline. Frontal marks elliptic, inconspicuous. Ecdysial line (epicranial suture) visible as a very faint line. Antenna light brown. Pronotum brown. Meso- and metanotum yellow brown anteriorly and brown posteriorly. Pleural sclerites light brown. Legs yellow brown. Tergites brown. Sternites light brown. Wings brownish, hyaline; anterior veins darker. Head capsule with sparse bristles and densely covered with short, inclined, hairs. Postclypeus with numerous hairs of variable size, longer and more spaced than on head capsule. Labrum with about 10 bristles and many short hairs. Pronotum with sparse bristles and densely covered with short, inclined, hairs, more numerous near margins. Tergites and sternites densely covered with hairs and with a line of bristles on posterior margin. Wings with short hairs on surface; anterior margin with dense, longer hairs. Head capsule oval, with slightly angular posterior corners. Fontanelle conspicuous, Y-shaped. Eye nearly circular, medium-sized, distance to lower margin of head about 1/7 its diameter. Ocelli oval, large and prominent, separated from eye by about half their width. Postclypeus inflated; anterior margin nearly straight; posterior margin convex. Pronotum with anterior margin nearly straight, slightly emarginate; sides convex converging posteriorly. Posterior margin of meso- and metanotum broadly V-shaped; posterior points roughly rounded, irregular. Wing microsculpturing. margins and veins with pointed papillae; membrane covered with dense asteroid micrasters (6–8 points). Antenna with 15 articles: 3>6>5=4>2. Measurements in Table 1.

Major soldier (Figs. 4 J–L; 7A–B). Head light brown; basal ¾ of nasus dark brown, tip light brown. Antennae yellow brown; basal articles about the same color as apical ones. Thoracic nota, legs, tergites and sternites yellow. Head capsule with 2 bristles on vertex and 4 at base of nasus, and numerous microscopic hairs. Nasus densely covered with short inclined hairs, and 4 longer ones at tip. Pronotum with 0–2 bristles on anterior margin. Meso- and metanotum without bristles. Thoracic nota with many microscopic hairs. Tergites with 4–6 long bristles on posterior margin; surface with sparse microscopic hairs. Sternites with a row of long bristles on posterior margin; surface with dense inclined hairs of variable length. Head capsule nearly oval, slightly angular; sides converging posteriorly. Nasus long, narrow and subcylindrical. Line of top of head with nasus concave in profile. Anterior margin of pronotum convex, not emarginate. Antenna with 13–14 articles. With 14 articles: 6>5>4>3=2; with 13 articles: 3>6>5>4>2; 3rd article often incompletely divided; sometimes left and right antennae with different number of articles. Measurements in Table 2.

Intermediate soldier (Figs. 5 G–I). Coloration, chaetotaxy and antennae similar to those of major soldier; head capsule and nasus darker colored. Smaller and with a slight constriction behind antennae. Nasus shorter, cylindrical, slightly upturned and dilated near apex. Measurements in Table 3

Minor soldier (Figs. 6 J–L). Antennal articles: 6>5=3>2=4. Measurements in Table 4.

Worker (Figs. 7 E–F, 8E–F, 9G–I, 10P–X, 11A, B, E). Head capsule yellow to brownish. Antenna with 14–15 articles. Measurements in Tables 5 and 6.

Comparisons. Imago. The imago of D. castaniceps has a paler head capsule, larger ocelli, and longer and more numerous hairs on the head. The imago of D. diversimiles is very similar and we have been unable to find consistent differences in external morphology. Major soldier. The head of the major soldier of D. castaniceps is paler and pear-shaped in dorsal view, with sides strongly converging anteriorly. The major soldier of D. diversimiles has an elliptical or angular head in dorsal view, and its nasus is proportionally shorter and broader at base. Intermediate soldier. The intermediate soldier of D. castaniceps has a paler head, a faint constriction behind antenna, shorter and upturned nasus and dilated near end. In D. diversimiles it has a more conspicuous constriction behind antennae and its nasus is shorter and slightly dilated near tip. Minor soldier. The minor soldier of D. castaniceps has the posterior half of the head capsule broad and rounded, a shorter nasus and usually only 12 antennal articles. The minor soldier of D. diversimiles usually has

a shorter nasus dilated near tip, but both show considerable variation and they are ofter difficult to differentiate.

Workers. Workers of D. castaniceps have a paler and smaller head, with more numerous short hairs. The workers of D. diversimiles are very similar to those of D. tiapuan, sp. n. The enteric valve armature is distinct in each species (see key to workers).

Distribution. Diversitermes tiapuan, sp. n. occurs mainly in savanna habitats in the Cerrado ecoregion (Fig. 14).

Biology. Diversitermes tiapuan, sp. n. apparently does not build nests, and has been found in diffuse galleries under litter or inside nests built by other termites, mainly Cornitermes spp.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038C87C09F083664CF83FA4269CF273D	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
