Body medium-sized (male wingspan 80–90 mm). Head yellow, immaculate or with black markings on vertex, postocular spine indistinct or absent. Lateral ocelli slightly separated from median ocellus with distance between them shorter than distance between antennal bases. Wings hyaline, pale grayish to smoky brown, with whitish or yellowish markings. Male ninth sternum medially inflated, posteriorly with a pair of digitiform or subtriangular lobes; ectoproct bifurcated proximally into band-like dorsal and subtriangular ventral lobes; tenth gonocoxite with a pair of ventromedial processes. Female ninth abdominal segment laterally with a pair of ovoid lobes.

Remarks. This species group appears to be most closely related to the P. assamensis group (Liu et al. 2007) in having similar genitalia, a bilobed male ectoproct and ovoid lateral lobes on the female ninth abdominal segment. However, in the P. changninganus group the dorsal lobe of male ectoproct is elongate and band-like, whereas in the P. assamensis group it is short and valvate (Liu et al. 2007a).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038B852B5B47FF94ABC99CA3FCE1B9D9	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In appearance, this species is characterized by the head with a pair of black markings, the pronotum with two pairs of broad black markings, the legs with tibia and tarsi largely blackish-brown. The forewings have distinct pale round markings at distal ⅓ (Fig. 1). The male genitalia of P. changninganus has the ninth sternum shallowly incised posteriorly, forming a pair of short subtriangular posterolateral lobes (Fig. 8).

Description. Known from a single male, P. changninganus is the most poorly known species of the group. Liu & Yang (2005) considered this species closely related to P. decemmaculatus . The male genitalia of these two species are similar, suggesting a possible conspecificity. However, based on the prothoracic and wing marking patterns as well as the widely separate geographical distribution, P. changninganus is recognized as a valid species. Further clarification will be possible when additional material becomes available.

Protohermes curvicornis sp. nov. (Figs. 2, 11–18)

Diagnosis. Based on the comparison of the holotypes of P. subnubilus and P. tengchongensis and the examination of additional specimens identified as these two species, we found the specific differences proposed by Liu & Yang (2005) too variable to recognize their taxon. Furthermore, the type localities of P. subnubilus and P. tengchongensis are in close proximity and all examined material are from an area of China-Myanmar boundary. We consider P. tengchongensis to be a junior subjective synonym of P. subnubilus .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038B852B5B4FFF9CABC99FF0FEB7B8C6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
