Type species: Scotosia sordidata Moore, 1888 (by monotypy).</p><p>The diagnosis of the genus has been presented in Schmidt (2006a).The diagnostic characters in adults are as follows: labial palpus very short, curved, with terminal segment very small, antenna in male bipectinated, forewing with two areoles, underneath more or less uniformly coloured. Male genitalia with tegumen bearing sclerotised lateral arms, valvae with costa projecting in an apical process and with basal projection, vinculum with distinct saccus, juxta with lateral papillae, calcar absent. Female genitalia with corpus bursae asymmetrical (with the exception of one Australian species), medium-sized to large, membranous, with a small diverticulum, signum in most species present. The ventral surface of the seventh abdominal segment in females is rough, often with a pair of distinct “pockets” or rounded depressions.</p><p>Habitat. Wet sclerophyll forest to subtropical and tropical primary or secondary forest at low to moderate elevations of 2130 m.</p><p>Distribution. Paralectotypes: seven males, 3 females, same data as lectotype; one male, 1 female, Dampier Island [Kar Kar Island], ASM, ii.-iii.1914 (BMNH, examined).</p><p>Description. Labial palpi dark brown, with some light brown scales at base of basal and medial segments, and at the apex. Legs dark brown, without rings of lighter scales. Wing expanse 28-40 mm (n = 13). Forewings above dark brown, with median band in males relatively narrow, dark brown, in females rather indistinct, with a fine, medial projection shaped like a double-tooth, edged in males with a very thin, white wavy line, in females with white dots, with whitish postmedial wavy line, underneath brown, with a few medial, wavy, dark brownish lines, with an elongate blackish discal dot. Hind wings above coloured as forewings, dark brown in basal half, with fine, wavy, medial and postmedial white lines, underneath coloured and patterned as forewings (Figs 7, 8, 13). Male genitalia (Figs 20, 21). Uncus rather short, broad at base, tapering, apically narrowly rounded, somewhat triangular shaped, with lateral prominences at base; tegumen shortened, at base with rather short lateral arms directed towards the upper margin of juxta; valvae large, with costa sclerotised, with medium-sized, straight, finger-shaped, projecting apical process and with short, curved basal projection, with ventral margin slightly sclerotised, with a strong medial, hook-shaped prominence; saccus medium-sized, more or less triangular shaped; juxta with mediumsized, elongate lateral papillae; aedeagus very thick for the genus, with anellus covered with fine spines, with rounded lateral patches of inwardly directed spicules near the apex, without cornuti and with very fine scobination in vesica. Female genitalia (Figs 26, 30). Antrum rather broad and short, almost parallel-sided, with a slightly sclerotised medial ring; ductus bursae medium-sized, broadened distally, narrowed proximally, with lateral stripes of heavier sclerotisation, corpus bursae in shape of boxing glove, membranous, with a rounded diverticulum, connected to corpus bursae close to the ductus by a medium-sized, thin tube, with ductus seminalis set medially on a prominent medial extension of corpus bursae; signum almost indistinct, a very small, proximal patch of fine, inwardly directed spicules.</p><p>Distribution. Papua New Guinea (Bismarck Archipelago: Manam Island, Kar Kar Island). The Manam Island was created by the activity of the Manam Volcano, which is known as one of Papua New Guinea’s most active ones. The lower volcano slopes are vegetated, whereas the upper slopes are bare. The Manam Island was inhabited until 2004. Papua New Guinea. Bougainville Island (autonomous region). Holotype female, Kukugai Village, (Buin), WWB, 17.x.1960 – 2.ii.1961 (ANIC).</p><p>Description. Labial palpi dark brown, with some ochreous scales at base of medial segment and at the apex. Thorax with light brown scales dorsally. Legs dark brown, without rings of lighter scales. Wing expanse 41 mm (n = 1). Forewings above brown to purple-brown and dark brown, with median band consisting of dark brown and purple-brown wavy lines, edged with a distinct, thin, white wavy line, with a short, medial double-tooth outwards, curved towards the costa, underneath coloured and patterned like above, but with the median band edged with indistinct, ochreous line, with rather large, curved, blackish discal dot. Hind wings above and underneath coloured as forewings. (Figs 6, 14). Male unknown. Female genitalia (Figs 27, 31). Antrum broad and short, almost parallelsided, with a thin, slightly sclerotised medial ring; ductus bursae medium-sized, narrowed proximally, with lateral stripes of heavier sclerotisation, corpus bursae membranous, shaped like a narrow boxing glove, without a prominent medial extension, with a drop-shaped diverticulum, connected to corpus bursae close to the ductus by a medium-sized, thin tube, with ductus seminalis set medially on corpus bursae; signum distinctly larger than in V. hyperctenista, a rounded patch of inwardly directed spicules.</p><p>Diagnosis. Forewings above brown, darker than in V. hyperctenista, with median band edged with more distinct, thin, white wavy line. Antrum and ductus bursae are slightly broader and corpus bursae is narrower than in V. hyperctenista, without a prominent medial extension, signum distinctly larger than in V. hyperctenista .</p><p>Distribution. Papua New Guinea (autonomous region Bougainville Island). Bougainville is a high volcanic mountainous island with swamp forests in its southern part. The island is part of the Solomon Islands rain forests ecoregion.</p><p>Etymology. Labial palpi dark brown, with ochreous scales at the apex. Legs brown, with distinct rings of lighter scales. Wing expanse 36 mm (n = 1). Forewings above pale ochreous to brown, with pinkish-brown scales, with median band edged with brown scales, pale in the middle, with a thick, medial projecting tooth outwards, without a discal dot, underneath pale reddish-ochreous, with indistinct, pale median band, with medial projection outwards, with a very small, indistinct discal dot. Hind wings above coloured as forewings, with alternative, wavy pinkish-brown and pale ochreous lines in the basal half, with median line forming a small, sharp, median tooth outwards, underneath coloured and patterned similar to forewings, but paler (Figs 5, 9). Male genitalia (Figs 18, 19). Uncus medium-sized, rather narrow at base, tapering towards the apex; tegumen short, with not prominent shoulders at base of uncus, with medium-sized, almost straight lateral arms directed towards the base of juxta; valvae rather narrow, with costa relatively narrow, sclerotised, with medium-sized, distally narrowly rounded, curved projecting apical process and with medium-sized basal projection; saccus medium-sized, elongate, triangular shaped; juxta with relatively small, apically rounded lateral papillae; aedeagus slightly curved, weakly sclerotised apically, with anellus covered with spines, without cornuti but with a large patch of scobination in vesica. Female unknown.</p><p>Habitat. Forest, at the altitude 1515 m.</p><p>Distribution. Papua New Guinea (Upper Mambaré River).</p><p>Remarks. The species is known only by the holotype. Labial palpi blackish-brown, with bright ochreous scales at the apex. Legs brown, without distinct rings of lighter scales. Wing expanse 35-37 mm (n = 2). Forewings above fawn-coloured to chestnut- and dark brown, with median band slightly darker than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a, dark brown to chestnut-brown, with some ochreous scales, edged with wavy, blackish-brown and whitish lines, with a medial projecting tooth outwards, less distinct than in V. v i n o s a, with a distinct, black discal dot, underneath mainly pinkish-brown, with several wavy median lines, forming a very fine, rounded medial projection outwards, with a small, blackish discal dot. Hind wings above dark brown at base, with distinct, wavy, brown, whitish and ochreous median lines curved towards the hind margin, underneath coloured and patterned similar to forewings, but with median line without medial projection (Figs 3, 11). Male genitalia (Figs 22, 23). Uncus elongate triangular, acute, shorter than in V. vinosa but slightly longer than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a; tegumen short, with not prominent shoulders at base of uncus, with mediumsized lateral arms directed towards the base of juxta; valvae similar to V. v i n o s a, with costa broader, sclerotised, with medium-sized, curved, tapering projecting apical process, with rounded subapical prominence and with medium-sized basal projection; saccus medium-sized, triangular shaped, smaller than in V. vinosa; juxta with relatively small, apically rounded lateral papillae; aedeagus almost straight, with anellus covered with spines, with a distinct patch of relatively long cornuti and with scobination in vesica. Female unknown.</p><p>Distribution. Moluccas (Buru: Rana).</p><p>Remarks. Only males of V. r a n e n s i s are known so far. Two females from the Moluccas (Seram) looking similar to V. r a n e n s i s are deposited in the accessions of the BMNH. Exact identification of those two specimens is hampered by the presence of sexual dimorphism. Labial palpi brown to dark brown, with rings of whitish scales at distal end of medial palpal segment. Legs brown, without distinct rings of lighter scales. Wing expanse 42 mm (n = 1). Forewings above ochreous- to greyish-brown, with median band rather broad, darker brown, edged with a thin, wavy ochreous line, with a broad tooth-like medial projection, with basal band slightly darker than the median band, not quite distinct, with a discal dot, underneath with median band almost indistinct. Hind wings above coloured like the forewings, but slightly paler, darker brown in the basal half, with very thin, wavy, pale ochreous line, with distinct, elongate discal dot, underneath coloured and patterned like forewings, with a thin, brown median line (Figs 4, 15). Male unknown. Female genitalia (Figs 28, 32). Antrum medium-sized, rather parallel sided, with a broad ring of distinct sclerotisation distally; ductus bursae short, sclerotised, with lateral stripes of heavier sclerotisation, corpus bursae large, compared to the group of closely related species, longer than width, somewhat pear-shaped, slightly wrinkled distally, membranous, with an inconspicuous medial spot of very thin sclerotisation, with a small, elongate dropshaped diverticulum connected proximally to the corpus by a long, thin tube, with ductus seminalis arising from a small medial extension of corpus bursae; signum a rather small, rounded patch of symmetrically arranged, inwardly directed spicules.</p><p>Diagnosis. Forewings above mainly ochreous-brown, lighter than in V. r a n e n s i s, with median band broader, with basal band darker and less distinct than in V. v ar i ov i no s a. Antrum slightly heavier sclerotized, ductus bursae slightly longer and corpus bursae is larger and more elongated than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a, signum larger than in V. variovinosa but smaller than in V. horista .</p><p>Distribution. Papua New Guinea (New Britain: Sinewit). New Britain is the largest volcanic island in the Bismarck Archipelago with the air-line distance from west to east about 477 km.</p><p>Etymology. Legs brown, without distinct rings of lighter scales. Wing expanse 33–35 mm (n = 10). Forewings above dull ochreous to dark brown, with median band distinct, brown to dark brown, with a few reddish-brown scales at costa, edged with a thin, wavy, white line, with a medial projecting tooth outwards, with basal band dark brown with reddish scales, with a distinct, black discal dot, underneath ochreous-brown, with brown and pinkish scales, with several wavy, dark brown median lines, forming a fine, rounded medial projection outwards, with a few small dark brown spots at costa, with a small blackish discal dot. Hind wings above brown at base, lighter than in V. r a n e n s i s, with wavy, alternative, brown and pale ochreous lines in the basal half, with whitish, wavy medial line, underneath coloured and patterned similar to forewings, but with median line without medial projection, with a small narrow discal dot (Figs 1, 12). Male genitalia (Figs 16, 17). Uncus small, triangular shaped, fused with tegumen, slightly shorter than in V. v i n o s a and V. r a n e n s i s; tegumen short, with lateral prominences at base of uncus, with medium-sized lateral arms directed towards the juxta; valvae with costa relatively broad, sclerotised, with medium-sized, curved, tapering projecting apical process, with distinct, finger-shaped subapical prominence and with medium-sized basal projection; saccus medium-sized, triangular shaped, shorter than in V. v i n o s a; juxta with medium-sized, apically rather flat lateral papillae; aedeagus almost straight, rather thick for the genus, with anellus covered with spines, with a distinct patch of relatively stout cornuti and with a patch of rather thick scobination in vesica. Female genitalia (Figs 29, 33). Antrum medium-sized, with a ring of sclerotisation distally; ductus bursae short, sclerotised, with lateral stripes of heavier sclerotisation, corpus bursae medium-sized, asymmetric, slightly longer than width, slightly wrinkled distally, membranous, with rather inconspicuous medial spot of very thin sclerotisation, with a medium-sized, somewhat drop-shaped diverticulum connected proximally to the corpus by a short tube, with ductus seminalis arising from a prominent medial extension of corpus bursae; signum a small, more or less rounded patch of symmetrically arranged, inwardly directed spicules.</p><p>Diagnosis. Forewings above dull ochreous to dark brown, lighter than in V. ranensis or V. grandivinosa with median band more distinct, with basal band lighter than in V. grandivinosa . Uncus shorter than in other described species, tegumen with lateral prominences at base of uncus, valval costa with finger-shaped subapical prominence more distinct than in other species, aedeagus rather thick for the genus but still thinner than in V. hyperctenista, with a distinct patch of cornuti and with rather thick scobination in vesica. Antrum medium-sized, weaker sclerotized than in V. grandivinosa, ductus bursae slightly shorter and corpus bursae is smaller than in V. grandivinosa, signum smaller than in V. grandivinosa but larger than in V. hyperctenista .</p><p>Distribution. Female forewings above with median band less distinct than in males.</p><p>Males from Upper Aroa River differ from the rest of the series by slightly thicker uncus and saccus.</p><p>One female from Hydrographer Mts, 762 m, Eichhorn Bros., iv.1918 (BMNH) has been studied additionally. Forewings above pale ochreous to brown, with median band distinct, light brown to brown, edged with several wavy brown lines, with traces of whitish scales outwards, with a medial, not prominent, tooth-like projection outwards, with a distinct, black, oval discal dot, underneath ochreous-brown, with pale ochreous, brown and pinkish scales, with several wavy, brown median lines, forming a faint, rounded medial projection outwards, with a medium sized blackish discal dot. Hind wings above brown at base, similar to V. variovinosa but somewhat lighter, with wavy, alternative, brown and pale-ochreous lines in the basal half, with almost indistinct, whitish, wavy medial line, underneath coloured and patterned similar to forewings, but with median lines hardly distinct, with small brownish dots along veins medially, with a discal dot slightly broader than in V. v a r io v in os a (Figs 2, 10). Male genitalia (Figs 24, 25). Uncus larger than in V. variovinosa, shaped like a slightly elongated triangle, with apex sharp; tegumen short, without distinct lateral prominences at base of uncus, with lateral arms slightly longer than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a, directed towards the juxta; valvae similar to V. ranensis, but slightly broader medially, with costa less curved, sclerotised, with medium-sized, slightly curved, tapering projecting apical process, with rather indistinct, flat subapical prominence and with medium-sized rather straight basal projection; saccus medium-sized, triangular shaped, somewhat narrowed, slightly longer than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a; juxta with medium-sized (slightly shorter than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a), apically flat lateral papillae; aedeagus straight, slightly longer than in V. variovinosa, with anellus covered with spines, without cornuti but with a large patch of distinct scobination in vesica. Female unknown.</p><p>Diagnosis. Forewings above pale ochreous to brown, with median band distinct, more reddish than in other species, with basal band lighter. Uncus larger than in V. v a r i o v i n o s a, shaped like a slightly elongated triangle, tegumen without distinct lateral prominences at base of uncus, valval costa with finger-shaped subapical prominence less distinct than in V. variovinosa and similar to V. ranensis but not as broad and prominent, aedeagus relatively thin, without cornuti but with a large patch of distinct scobination in vesica which is a distinguishing character.</p><p>Distribution. Papua New Guinea (Morobe province).</p><p>Etymology.
