Type species: Pityocona xeropis Meyrick, 1918 .

Generic characters. Head smoothly scaled. Ocellus present, small. Antenna simple, about 5/6 length of forewing; scape moderately elongate, without pecten. Labial palpus long, recurved, much thickened throughout with scales; second segment thickened towards apex, third segment as long as second. Maxillary palpus very short, filiform, appressed to proboscis. Forewing lanceolate, elongate, often with distinct blackish spots; cell closed, with 12 veins (Fig. 1), R4 and R5 stalked for half distance, R5 to costa before apex, M3 from lower angle of cell; 1A+2A forked at base. Hindwing narrow, elongate, apex pointed, termen emarginate sinuately; Rs and M1 parallel, M1 and M2 approximated at base.

Male genitalia. Uncus bifurcate, forming two symmetrical or asymmetrical lateral lobes. Gnathos tongueshaped, hooked, uniformly straight, or tapered to apex; culcitula present, ovate or cordiform. Tegumen broad, divided from near base. Valva elongate, usually symmetrical (except asymmetrical in P. monoprocessa sp. nov.), often with a process at middle or at apex on ventral margin. Vinculum very narrow. Aedeagus dilated bulbously at base, narrowed to apex.

Female genitalia. Apophyses posteriores two times longer than apophyses anteriores. Ductus bursae sometimes with numerous fine denticles except at its proximal and distal part. Corpus bursae ovate; signum present or absent.

Remarks. The narrow forewing of Pityocona with several distinct black spots and the male genitalia with bifurcate uncus make Pityocona distinguishable from its most closely related genera. The diagnostic characters of this genus include the bifurcate uncus, the valva curved approximately beyond middle and extending inward distally, and the extremely narrow vinculum in the male genitalia.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03927C0D687AFFF3FF751183FC83F9A9	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species is similar to the type species P. xeropis both in appearance and in genitalia. It can be distinguished by the labial palpus without a banding pattern, and the sub-rectangular symmetrical lateral parts of the uncus. In P. xeropis, the labial palpus has a greyish brown banding pattern, and the digitate lateral parts of the uncus are asymmetrical (Clarke, 1969: 313. Figs 1–1 d).

Redescription. Adult (Fig. 2 a) with wingspan 10.0–12.0 mm. Head shiny creamy white to yellowish white, with sparse brown scales above compound eyes. Antenna about 5/6 length of forewing, with scape creamy white and glossy; flagellum pale yellow and black alternately. Labial palpus creamy white; second segment with compact scale tuft on ventral surface; third segment fuscous near apex on outer side. Thorax and tegula creamy white. Forewing yellowish brown, mixed with black and white scales; three sub-ovate blackish spots equidistantly placed at basal 1/3 of cell on upper margin, at both middle and end of cell respectively, surrounded by creamy white; obscure black spot at apex of wing sometimes; fold with dense creamy white scales, with black spots at basal 1/3, at middle and at distal 1/3 respectively, sometimes obscure; fringe pale brown. Hindwing greyish brown; fringe pale brown, two to three times of wing width. Legs dominantly yellowish white; fore- and midlegs with coxae and femora blackish brown basally on ventral surface, with tibiae and tarsi blackish brown on outer surface; midleg with tibia and tarsus mixed with greyish brown scales on outer surface, tarsus with yellowish white ring at apex of each tarsomere; hindleg with tibia bearing long yellowish brown hairs, tarsus blackish brown at base of each tarsomere on outside.

Male genitalia (Fig. 3 a): Uncus wide, sub-rectangular, lobes separated from anterior 1/4, narrowed at base, slightly widened toward posterior margin, posterior margin with triangular concavity at middle, forming an inner process truncate at apex, an outer process rounded at apex with dense setae laterally. Gnathos nearly as long as uncus, widened basally, slightly narrowed distally, indented at apex (Fig. 3 a1); culcitula sub-round. Tegumen divided from basal 1/3; lateral branch equally wide, truncate anteriorly. Valva apically reaching top of uncus; ventral margin sinuate, concave at basal 1/3 and distal 1/3, bluntly protruded medially; dorsal margin slightly concave before rounded apex. Aedeagus slightly thinned to blunt apex.

Female genitalia (Fig. 4 a): Papillae anales more or less digitate, with setae. Apophyses anteriores about 2/5 length of apophyses posteriores. Ostium bursae rounded, with a semicircular plate anteriorly. Ductus bursae membranous, longer than corpus bursae, with a wide sclerotized ring between basal 1/5 and 1/4. Corpus bursae ovate, membranous; signum triangular, with finely serrate edge.

Host plant: Poaceae: Oryza sativa L. (Li & Chen 1988).

Distribution. China (Chongqing, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Henan, Hunan, Yunnan), India.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03927C0D6878FFF4FF751695FF23FE1F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
