039087B1FFE0FFF696A6FAB7FCEFF9D4.taxon	diagnosis	External diagnosis (Hyman 1941). Largest specimen 33 mm. Anterior end narrow, body quickly widening to broad flat shape. Dorsum with black mottling on a dark-brown background. A diffuse median dorsal band is only evidenced on the middle part of the body, caused by the absence of black pigment that shows the background color. Eyes surrounding the anterior end in a single row, then extending to several rows that occupy about one-third of the body width at about the anterior third of the body, then decreasing in width to the level of the pharynx, from which only a few scattered eyes occur to the posterior end (Fig 2 c, 3).	en	Boll, Piter Kehoma, Luna, Manuel De (2025): Diversity of land planarians (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida: Geoplanidae) in Central America: annotated checklist with new records of native and introduced species from citizen science. 039087B1FFE4FFF296A6FA52FAE2F8E2.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Geoplana mayori was described by Fuhrmann (1914) based on specimens from Colombia. The specimen identified as such by Hyman in Panama probably belongs to a different species. Two specimens roughly matching Hyman’s description and drawing (Figure 4 b) were recorded in Costa Rica. Possible iNaturalist records (Figure 5). 039087B1FFFBFFEC96A6F98AFB1DFD2F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Some specimens from Costa Rica and Panamá partially match Hyman’s description (Figure 4 e – f). The main difference is the presence of a dark median line, which is not mentioned in the original description, and the yellowish or reddish color, but the latter might be due to the original description being based on preserved specimens. The stripes unite at the anterior end, making the head blackish, but reach the yellow posterior end separately. Eyes surrounding the anterior end in a single row that widens posteriorly, forming a band of eyes occupying the marginal yellow zone and starting to decrease in number at the level of the pharynx. Pharynx at about 42 mm from the anterior end (Figure 6 a).	en	Boll, Piter Kehoma, Luna, Manuel De (2025): Diversity of land planarians (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida: Geoplanidae) in Central America: annotated checklist with new records of native and introduced species from citizen science. 039087B1FFFAFFEE96A6F8A6FBF1FD2F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Several specimens in Panama and Costa Rica partially match Hyman’s (1962) description. In Costa Rica, the specimens are yellowish in the middle and white on the sides (Figure 6 b), whereas in Panama one specimen is white in the middle and yellowish on the sides (Figure 6 c), and the other is orangish (Figure 6 d). The latter is the one that best matches the original description, but due to the distance and great difference in altitude from the location from which the species was originally described, we think this is likely a different species. The anterior end of this specimen is also not visible in the photograph, which increases the difficulty in assigning it to G. bistriata with greater certainty. 039087B1FFFDFFE496A6F9F4FC80FE5F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. De Beauchamp described two very different dorsal color patterns for G. picadoi but presented no drawings, and they likely correspond to different species. Among the specimens recorded on iNaturalist, some match the ‘ marbled’ pattern (Figure 10 a) and others (Figure 10 b – f) partially match the ‘ striped’ pattern, in which the color varies from brown to black and the median stripe may or not be bordered by the dark lines described by de Beauchamp. No specimen has a true marginal band but rather a thin margin with the same color as the median stripe. However, it is unclear whether by band he meant a narrow or wide stripe. In some specimens, dorsal eyes with halos are visible on the dark sides. Although we included both morphospecies under the name Gigantea picadoi, we considered them as two different species in the results presented above. Possible iNaturalist records of the ‘ marbled’ pattern (Figure 11). 039087B1FFDFFFC596A6F970FDCBFD5B.taxon	diagnosis	External diagnosis (de Beauchamp 1912). Largest specimens about 40 mm long. The pharynx is situated at one-third of the body length from the anterior end. Six different color patterns: (a) Dorsal color light brick red with ochre-yellow sides bordering the almost white creeping sole. Dorsum and sides separated by a wide brown, almost black, band. In the middle of the dorsum there is a narrow stripe of the same dark tinge as the lateral bands, which is bordered on each side by a thinner and paler stripe. The five longitudinal stripes fade near the eyes (Figure 33 a). (b) Same pattern as above but without the accessory stripes bordering the median stripe (Figure 33 b). (c) Also without the accessory stripes and with the sides marked by black flecks that fuse dorsally with the lateral bands. Paler flecks (which seem to be deeper in the tissues) accompany the black flecks and can extend to the creeping sole (Figure 33 c). (d) Similar to (a), but with the dorsum ochre-yellow as the sides and with flecks on both the sides as in (c) and on the dorsum, fusing with the accessory stripes (Figure 33 d). (e) Dorsum uniformly lead gray with ochre-yellow sides. Posteriorly, the sides become marbled and less distinct from the dorsum (Figure 33 e). (f) Similar to (a), but without the median and accessory stripes. The lateral bands are much narrower and connected by a “ saddle ” over the pharynx (Figure 33 f).	en	Boll, Piter Kehoma, Luna, Manuel De (2025): Diversity of land planarians (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida: Geoplanidae) in Central America: annotated checklist with new records of native and introduced species from citizen science. 039087B1FFDFFFC596A6F970FDCBFD5B.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Many records from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama partially match one or more of the color patterns described by de Beauchamp (Figure 33 g – j). They may represent several different species, of which one may or may not be conspecific with R. bromelicola. The color pattern often consists of a light-yellow background (sometimes reddish) with a dark (black or dark reddish-brown) median line that may or may not be accompanied by two paramedian lines, sometimes the three lines fusing into a black median band. The sides show dark pigmentation that may occur as a well-marked black lateral band, a more diffusely marked band with a more heavily marked inner or outer edge (or both), many black round spots, or a combination of bands and spots. iNaturalist records (Figure 34). 039087B1FFD3FFC496A6F8DEFAB1FD97.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Hyman (1941) described this species as having a uniformly black dorsal color. We found specimens with a dark brown to black dorsal color (Figure 35 b), sometimes with a slightly darker median stripe, in areas near the locations presented in the original description. Thus, we consider these specimens as possibly belonging to this species. Possible iNaturalist records (Figure 36).
