According to Bosmans (2009), the males within the germanicum group are characterized by a conspicuous tegular projection which form is often of diagnostic value at species level. The males within the spinibarbe group have an unmodified tegulum and possess a large retinaculum (tegular apophysis attached to tegulum with membranous support sensu Jocqué 1991), often incised prolaterally, and with several large teeth. The shape of retinaculum is of significant diagnostic value.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039B8783FFF6FFE2C38FBCD0FD1BFBEB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Males are distinguishable by the following traits: the proximal prolateral tooth of the retinaculum (PPR) 2 times longer than wide in Z. emilijae sp. n. (Fig. 18) vs. 1.2–1.5 times longer than wide in Z. blagoevi (Fig. 21) and Z. epirense (Fig. 24) and about 1.5 times wider than long in Z. zorba (Fig. 27); incision of retinaculum U-shaped in Z. emilijae sp. n. vs. roughly V-shaped in Z. blagoevi and Z. zorba and almost round in Z. epirense, with opening two times longer than PPR width in Z. emilijae sp. n. vs. almost equal in Z. blagoevi and Z. epirense and two times shorter than PPR width in Z. zorba . Females are distinguishable as follows: posterior margin of epigynal plate trapezoid and deeply incised in Z. emilijae sp. n. vs. triangular with a rounded tip and less incised in Z. blagoevi, Z. epirense and Z. zorba; spermathecae separated by less than 2 diameters in Z. emilijae sp. n. (Figs 22, 25, 27) vs. more than 2 diameters in Z. blagoevi and Z. zorba (Figs 24, 26, 28) and 4 diameters in Z. epirense (Fig. 23); spermathecae large and almost spherical in Z. emilijae sp. n. vs. small and two-chambered in Z. epirense . Snow-white coxae and abdominal spots present in both sexes in Z. emilijae sp. n. (Figs 5, 33) vs. whitish or pale beige in Z. blagoevi (Figs 6, 34), Z. epirense (Figs 7, 35) and Z. zorba (Figs 8, 36).

Etymology. The specific name is dedicated to Emilija Stojkoska (Skopje, North Macedonia), a malacologist who has a great contribution to the faunistic studies in North Macedonia.

Description. All other records from Bulgaria by Drensky (1913, 1921, 1932, 1936a, 1940) have been re-examined and found to refer to Z. pirini Drensky, 1921 (Deltshev 1987) . According to Bosmans (1997) the confirmed records of Z. germanicum are located much further north—in northeastern Croatia and northern Serbia (Djakovo and Fruska Gora) and all southern records in the Balkans are very doubtful. We completely agree with his assessment, moreover, all available re-examined specimens are misidentified and no proven records in the last over 80 years; therefore, we remove Z. germanicum from the checklists of Bulgaria, Greece and North Macedonia.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039B8783FFF1FFE4C38FB879FE0FFEE3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
