In southeastern Morocco and adjacent areas of northwestern Algeria south of Oran one finds plants with rather long, patent but soft hairs and siliques with relatively short stylar segments, which could be identified as D. virgata f. sahariensis Cosson (1887: 165) and are here proposed to constitute a separate species.

Note 1: —As the name of a new taxon, D. virgata var. cavanillesiana f. platystylos Nègre should be considered invalid, since the short descriptive phrase in the key is written in French. However, the phrase “ D. virgata f. sahariensis Coss., comp., II, p. 165” written just below Nègre’s name constitutes a full reference to a previously published diagnosis with its own valid name, of which f. platystylos should be considered a superfluous synonym, despite the fact that the abundant material cited by Nègre includes specimens belonging not only to D. sahariensis, but also to D. virgata subsp. tenuirostris, and to the new species described further below.

Note 2: —At least eight out of 13 specimens cited under D. virgata var. cavanillesiana f. hispida Nègre (1960: 64) belong to D. sahariensis . However, in the diagnostic French phrase the hairs are described as “raides” (rigid) whereas they are in fact soft. Other specimens belonging to D. sahariensis are cited by Nègre (1960) under his f. platystylos .

Note 3: — Diplotaxis sahariensis belongs to sect. They have not been described or named so far and therefore constitute a new species.

Note 1: —Several specimens belonging to D.australis were cited by Nègre(1960) under D. virgata var. cavanillesiana f. tenuirostris and f. platystylos .

Note 2: — Diplotaxis australis belongs to sect. Rhynchocarpum.

Identification key for North African taxa of the Diplitaxis virgata -group:

1. Hairs on sepals more or less flexuose, pointing in different directions and apparently disorderly arranged, those on stems mostly retrorse. Anthers yellow, with a purple spot on tip (to be observed in vivo, before anthesis) .............................. Diplotaxis australis

- Hairs on sepals straight, patent, those on stems patent or little retrorse. Anthers yellow throughout, without a purple spot on tip...............................................................................................................................................................................................................2.

2. Hairs rather soft, gentle when touched. Stylar segment of fruit 1.2–2.5(–3.7) mm long, equivalent to approximately 1/20–1/10 of the total length of the silique ............................................................................................................................ Diplotaxis sahariensis

- Hairs hirsute, stiff (at least on stems). Stylar segment of fruit (2.2–)3–6(–7) mm long, equivalent to ± 1/10–1/5 of the total length of the silique......................................................................................................................................................................................3.

3. Hairs on leaves patent. Siliques 18–29(–35) mm long, stigma ± capitate ...................................... Diplotaxis virgata subsp. virgata

- Hairs on leaves at least in part ± reclining.
