Shamefully few ornithological works give the basis for the nomenclature used. Vieillot established the genus for his newly named species Erolia variegata. The species name was eventually (Mathews and Iredale 1923:54) equated with Scolopax testacea Pallas, 1764, and the citation of the genus Erolia later included the wording “ type, by monotypy, Erolia variegata Vieillot = Scolopax testacea Pallas ” (e.g., Peters 1934). Stresemann (1941) determined that an earlier name, Tringa ferruginea Pontoppidan, 1763 applies to the same species as testacea. The AOU (1946:429) accepted this and subsequently (AOU 1957, 1983, 1998) has used the species name ferruginea (in either Erolia or Calidris). However, the citation for the generic name Erolia was never updated to reflect the change in the currently accepted name of the type species. The citation for the generic name Erolia should include the wording: type species, by monotypy, Erolia variegata Vieillot = Tringa ferruginea Pontoppidan.

I thank Daria Wingreen-Mason and David R. Bridge for assistance with literature. Frank Steinheimer provided the citation for Anon. = Merrem 1804. M. R. Browning and J. R. Jehl, Jr. made important comments on the manuscript.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03A6B75B2906FFE7FF34E851FED6F80F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
