This longhorn beetle, commonly known as the locust borer, is a pest throughout much of the U.S., including Oregon (DeAngelis and Hamm 1996); however, apparently there are no specific locality records published for that state. It appears to be an eastern U.S. species that has spread, either on its own or by introduction, to areas that have been planted with black locust (its host), which has naturalized over a wide area of the western U.S. Likely the beetle has been in Oregon many years: it has been observed in the Ontario area, Malheur Co., for well over a decade (Ben Simko, personal communication); and specimens collected in 1939 from Spokane, Washington, are in WSUC (Richard Zack, in litt.). Numerous specimens from Morrow and Umatilla counties (notably a large series reared from black locust, Hermiston, 12VIII to 3IX93, D. S. Jackson, RLW) are in MSUC, ODAC, and OSAC. Adults have been collected on a wide variety of native and ornamental flowers. In addition, during recent years adults have been taken in Lindgren funnel traps (ODAPMS) in Union Co., Elgin and La Grande; and Wasco Co., The Dalles. One specimen from Hood River Co., Cascade Locks, 5IX94, on yellow composite, J. Rifkind (JNRC) represents the westernmost locality we know for this species.

Piodes coriacea LeConte. This is a new western U.S. record. This species was first reported in North America by Hoebeke (1980), based on a specimen collected in Massachusetts in 1979. James Todd, a consulting entomologist, reported (in litt.) that in western Oregon the adults occur during late summer and early fall. Leaf damage was observed first during fall, 2003, with more severe damage in 2004; there was no evidence of plant damage that might be attributable to larvae, none of which have been found; and strawberry plantings in the Willamette Valley have been sampled on a regular schedule for 25 years. Thus, it seems that this is a relatively recent introduction into the area. Chaetocnema concinna is a Palaearctic immigrant recorded from eastern Canada, the northeastern U.S., and Texas; and is recorded from plants in 10 families. Probably all do not serve as larval hosts, including strawberry (Fragaria) which is in Rosaceae . It seems to favor hosts in Chenopodiaceae and Polygonaceae and, in its native range, is injurious to crops (but apparently not strawberry) (LeSage 1990, White 1996, Riley et al. 2003, Clark et al. 2004).

Chaetocnema labiosa White. This species and P. nebraskensis (Bland) were described from widely separated localities, in California and northern parts of the old Nebraska Territory (now Montana), respectively. Both names are applied to populations in the western United States and Canada, in contrast to P. triundulatus (Randall) (a boreal forest species in Canada and northeastern portions of the United States), although it has been erroneously recorded in the Pacific Northwest (Lane and Lanchester 1971). Brown (1936), using morphological traits of the antenna, overall size, and pubescence patterns, kept P. nebraskensis and P. tigrinus specifically distinct, but suggested that P. tigrinus may best be treated as a subspecies of P. nebraskensis. Although we saw specimens collected from the same general area that appear intermediate (indicating one variable species), until an adequate revision of Pseudanostirus of North America can be completed we are retaining Brown’s treatment. Jackson Co., Medford, 24VII2002, at lights, K. Love (ODAC, OSAC). This potentially serious turf grass pest had been recorded from all but five of the contiguous 48 states, including California (Tashiro 1987, Stebnicka & Lago 2005). We believe it is a relatively recent introduction into Oregon since the Medford area was continuously trapped by black light for almost a decade, from the mid1960s through the mid1970s. If this species had been present in any numbers, we feel certain it would have been detected. Furthermore, reports of damage attributable to this species are currently confined to the immediate vicinity of Medford.

** Onthophagus nuchicornis (Linnaeus) . This introduced dung scarab has been known in the Pacific Northwest, where it is widespread, at least since 1945, therefore we find it odd that it has not been recorded from Oregon. This introduced scarab has been known in the Pacific Northwest since 1930 and was first recorded from North America in 1871 (Hatch 1971). Arnett (2000) listed it from “OR” without specific locality, but Skelley & Gordon (2002) recorded it only from New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington. We have seen one specimen from Multnomah Co. Portland, Forest Park, 2IV2003, ODAPMS with ethanol lure, T. A. Stafford.

** Rhyssemus germanus (Linnaeus) . Yet another introduced species, this European native was reported by Gordon and Cartwright (1980) only from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River regions. The genus was previously unknown in the Pacific Northwest. One specimen, Deschutes Co., Bend, 2791 NE Broken Bow Dr., funnel trap with 2 methyl3buten1ol lure, 6VII2004, A.
