03B68458FFB2FFF5FF56A9C7FBA5F90F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The largest of the three specimens in the sample from Sokotra is just 17 mm long, compared to material used in previous descriptions (38 mm: Kraepelin 1903; 45 mm: Silvestri 1897; 60 mm: Attems 1910). The NHM specimens have relatively few marginal setae on the coxosternal margin (4 + 4, 5 + 5, 6 + 5 setae) and have fewer saw teeth on the ultimate leg (9 or 10 teeth on the tibia, three on tarsus 1) than in larger specimens from Somilia or Tanzania. Attems (1930) summarized the latter as having 15 – 16 teeth on the tibia and three, five or six on tarsus 1. The former count is based on the largest known specimen (Attems 1910), and we attribute the difference to ontogeny; the 27 mm long specimen on which Ribaut (1914) based a subspecies from Kenya, C. (T.) bottegii kenyae, resembles the Sokotra specimens in having 6 + 6 setae on the coxosternal margin and three saw teeth on tarsus 1. The Sokotra specimens show the distal spinose processes on the inner side of the ultimate leg prefemur, outer side of the femur, and both sides of the tibia noted in other material, as well as complete paramedian sutures on the head and TT 1 – 20. Although the Sokotra Archipelago (Yemen) is the largest and biologically most diverse island group in the Arabian Region (Van Damme and Banfield 2011), in terms of biodiversity the island of Sokotra is mainly influenced by East Africa, being situated about 100 km east of the Horn of Africa.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFB2FFF4FF56AD2CFBFBFEC4.taxon	discussion	Remarks. A specimen from Cameroon is assigned to the only Cryptops (Trigonocryptops) species described from that country that shares its nearly complete paramedian sutures on the cephalic plate, though the difference in size between the specimens (30 mm in the NHM specimen versus 80 mm in the holotype of C. (T.) gigas), coupled with the absence of the ultimate leg pair in the latter, makes comparison imperfect. The NHM specimen has 12 saw teeth on the ultimate leg tibia and two on tarsus 1. Distal spinose processes are present on the inner side of the ultimate leg prefemur, the outer side of the femur, and on both sides of the tibia. Paramedian sutures are incomplete (present anteriorly) on T 1, confined to the pretergite of T 2, and complete from TT 3 – 20.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFB7FFFFFF56AB0FFF7BFD9C.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Material studied here agrees with descriptions by Kraepelin (1903) and Attems (1930) in the following: 17 antennal articles of which three are glabrous; 4 + 4 teeth on the coxosternal tooth plates (Fig. 5); paramedian sutures complete from T 6; tergites marginate from 8; sternites with three longitudinal median depressions, an ovate lateral depression, and a round posteromedian depression; a short coxopleural process; and a prefemoral spine formula of DM 2 (including a corner spine), VM 2, VL 3. Of three specimens retaining the ultimate leg (including both Cameroon and Tanazania), this prefemoral formula is conserved apart from one Tanzanian specimen with DM 1, M 1, VM 2, VL 2 (Figs 6, 7). Regarding the Tanzanian specimen the left ultimate leg is shorter than the right and differs in the number and arrangement of spines. This and the fact that the left coxopleural process is missing suggests loss and regeneration of the leg and damage and repair of the coxopleural process. Published accounts noted some geographic variability with respect to the shape of the sternite of the ultimate leg-bearing segment, described as parallel-sided in material from Cameroon and narrowing posteriorly in material from Tanzania (Attems, 1930), but the Cameroon specimen examined here has the same trapezoidal shape as the Tanzanian material (Fig. 7). Specimens from Cameroon have been described as lacking tarsal spurs or having them at most tiny; the Cameroon specimen examined here has a small tarsal spur on legs 1 – 19, and it has two small apical spines on the coxopleural process (only one fide Kraepelin; mostly one, seldom two fide Attems). The Tanzanian sample includes two specimens with a tarsal spur on leg 1 only and one entirely lacking tarsal spurs, and of the six coxopleurae examined, five have two apical spines (Fig. 7) and one lacks a process (and thus lacks spines).	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. Antenna extending back to T 5, with 17 articles in types (16 articles in ZMB 927), the basal four glabrous (Fig. 10). Cephalic plate punctate, variably with a pair of longitudinal depressions posteriorly. Coxosternal tooth plates several times wider than long; anterior margin of tooth plate straight, adentate, gently inclined laterally for most of its width, expanding at its lateral corner to from a blunt bulge (Figs 11, 12). Single hyaline seta near midline of toothplate, inserting at boundary of strongly pigmented margin. Trochanteroprefemoral process a sclerotized blade, lacking distinct teeth (Figs 11, 12). Second maxillary telopodite with a pretarsal accessory spur; dorsal spine on distal part of article 2. Tergites smooth, lacking keels or rugosity. Paramedian sutures continuous from TT 3 or 4 – 20; mostly with incomplete sutures extending about half length of T 3. Margination complete on TT 19 – 21, incomplete from TT 14 – 15. Sternites with continuous paramedian sutures to S 19, lacking on S 20. Legs 1 and 2 with two tarsal spurs; legs 3 to 16, 17, 18 or 19 with one tarsal spur, lacking on leg 20; all legs lacking tibial spurs apart from leg 1 (right leg only) in ZMB 927. 03B68458FFB8FFFDFF56A8FBFEE8FC66.taxon	discussion	Discussion. The type material is from the island of Säo Tomé; a conspecific specimen (ZMB 927; Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin) from the island of Rolas is a syntype of Otostigmus (Parotostigmus) productus Karsch, 1888 but is excluded from that species with the designation of a lectotype below. Compared to all other African O. (Parotostigmus), this species is readily distinguished by its adentate tooth plates. The most similar species, O. (P.). productus Karsch, also occurs on São Tomé, and the two taxa share some character states that, in combination, separate them from other African O. (Parotostigmus). These include 17 antennal articles, four of which are glabrous (versus 2 – 2.5 in other species), complete paramedian sutures from TT 3 or 4, complete paramedian sutures on the sternites, and a pair of coxopleural apical spines. The uniquely adentate tooth plates of O. (P.) coltellus are the same in the four known specimens of the species and this difference from O. (P.) productus cannot be attributed to wear, particularly because the sutures defining the base of the tooth plate are distinct from those of O. (P.) productus. In the latter species, the relatively long tooth plates are set off by oblique sutures (for further details see figures in O. (P.) productus), whereas the suture at the base of the tooth plate in O. (P.) coltellus is approximately transverse (see Figs 11, 12). As well, the position of the single hyaline seta on each tooth plate is a reliable marker of the boundary between the sclerotized margin of the tooth plate and its basal plate. The two species are also readily distinguished by the shape of the coxopleural process, being shorter and less slender in O. (P.) coltellus. These two species co-occur in the collection from Zampalma that includes the holotype of O. (P.) coltellus. Although a marked size difference separates the two (large) specimens of O. (P.) coltellus from the nine smaller specimens of O. (P.) productus, morphological differences cannot be attributed to changes with growth because the smaller paratype of O. (P.) coltellus (BMNH 1933.8.30.239) is scarcely larger than the Zalpalma specimens of O. (P.) productus, yet both species exhibit their typical characters of the tooth plates and coxopleural process.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFBAFFFBFF56AD23FE3AFCFA.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The syntypes of Otostigma productum Karsch, 1888 include two species, one corresponding to the descriptions of the species by subsequent workers in possessing 4 + 4 teeth on the tooth plates (Kraepelin, 1903; Attems, 1930), and the other being the species described as Otostigmus (Parotostigmus) coltellus n. sp. A lectotype is selected herein, choosing a mature specimen that corresponds to the description of the species in the influential monographs of Kraepelin and Attems, to stablise the name according to the concept of the species employed since 1903. In agreement with previous descriptions (compiled by Attems 1930), all based on the type material from São Tomé, the specimens from the same island studied here have 17 antennal articles, four of which are glabrous (Fig. 18), tooth plates with 4 + 4 teeth (Fig. 19), and two apical spines on the coxopleural process (Fig. 20). Ultimate legs lack prefemoral spines (Fig. 21). Legs 1 – 19 have been described as bearing one tarsal spur (Kraepelin 1903; Attems 1930), but in the NHM material legs 1 and 2 or 1 – 3 may bear two spurs, the remainder to leg 19 consistently bearing one.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFBCFFFAFF56AD25FBA0FCB4.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Assignment of specimens from Ghana and Saint Helena to this widespread tropical subspecies follows the key of Attems (1930) and descriptions by Lewis (2002) and Chao (2008). The sample from Ghana includes three immature specimens (length 26 – 31 mm) and comparative remarks are limited to the largest specimen (52 mm). It has the following typical characters of the species: 18 antennal articles, three of which are glabrous dorsally; 4 + 4 coxosternal teeth with the inner and outer pairs grouped; two lateral teeth and an apical tooth on the trochanteroprefemoral process; paramedian sutures complete from T 4; tergites marginate from 8; paramedian sutures confined to the anterior part of the sternites; a coxopleural process of the same shape as in Lewis (2002: fig. 13), with three apical / subapical spines and a lateral spine; prefemoral spines arranged as DM 3 (including a corner spine), M 2, VM 3 / 2 + 2, VL 3; two tarsal spurs on legs 1 – 10 or 11, one tarsal spur on legs 11 - or 12 – 19; one tibial spur on legs 1 – 4 or 1 – 6. A unique feature is the presence of a small dorsal spine on one side of the coxopleural process. The specimen from Saint Helena has two tarsal spurs on legs 1 – 7 and one on legs on 8 – 19, and has the prefemoral spine formula DM 3 (including corner spine), VM 3, VL 3.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFBEFFF9FF56AAB5FBB6FC02.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Specimens studied here fit fully within the variation encompassed by previous descriptions (following the synonymy by Lewis and Gallagher 1993). The Ethiopian specimens have 19 antennal articles, three of which are glabrous (Fig. 23), 5 + 5 forcipular teeth (Fig. 24), continuous paramedian sutures from TT 5 – 20, paramedian sutures confined to a short anterior extent on the sternites, the diagnostic three prefemoral spines (1 VL, 1 VM, 1 DM) confined to the proximal half of the prefemur (Fig. 25), the coxopleural process with two apical spines but no dorsal or lateral spines (Fig. 26), two tarsal spurs on legs 1 – 18, and one tibial spur on legs 1 – 4. Lewis and Gallagher (1993) followed Attems (1930) in treating R. paucidens as a subspecies of R. lithobioides (Newport, 1845), resulting in a geographically widespread species distributed from China through India and East Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. They noted, however, that the nominate subspecies (from East Asia) was “ quite distinct from the others ” (1993: 59), and we regard the cited differences in the number of legs bearing two tarsal spurs and prefemoral spine numbers and distributions, as sufficient to defend separate species status. Accordingly we returned R. lithobioides paucidens to the species level (as in Kraepelin 1903).	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFBEFFF9FF56A9DBFB6AF8CF.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The smaller specimen from Zomba (22 mm) has 17 antennal articles, of which three are glabrous dorsally (Fig. 27) and 5 + 5 forcipular teeth (Fig. 28); the larger specimen from Likoma Island (58 mm) has 18 antennal articles, 2.66 of which are glabrous dorsally. Both specimens from Malawi have the diagnostic short paramedian sutures on the tergites (confined to the posterior part of TT 4 – 20), only the tergite of the ultimate legbearing segment being marginate, the strongly embayed posterior margin and approximately quadratic shape of the sternite of the ultimate leg-bearing segment (Fig. 29, cf. Kraepelin 1903: fig. 97), and three spines (two apical, one subapical, no lateral or spine spine) on the coxopleural process (Fig. 29), though these characters are also shared by R. intermedia Attems, 1910, from Pemba Island, Zanzibar. 17 antennal articles in R. stuhlmanni stuhlmanni corresponds to the description of R. intermedia but previous descriptions have not indicated the number of glabrous antennal articles in R. s. stuhlmanni, so it is not clear whether this might serve as a basis to recognize two species. In the larger specimen, legs 1 – 19 bear two tarsal spurs (1 – 18 fide Kraepelin 1903), and legs 1 – 17 bear a tibial spur (leg 18 is missing, and leg 19 lacks a tibial spur). The smaller specimen has two tarsal spurs to at least leg 17 (the following legs are missing) and a tibial spur to at least leg 13 but lacking on leg 17. The main differences between the Malawi specimens and R. intermedia are the presence of 17 – 18 antennal articles (versus 19), two tarsal spurs to legs 17 + / 19 (versus 15) and a gentle curve to the outer margin of the coxopleural pore field, corresponding to “ ziemlich geradlinig ” (R. stuhlmanni in Attems’ key) rather than “ tief eingebuchtet ” (R. intermedia).	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFA0FFE7FF56AFCDFE2DF86A.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Cormocephalus anceps was recognised as a species until it was transferred to C. westwoodi as a subspecies by Schileyko and Stagl (2004). Molecular phylogenetic studies Vahtera et al. (2013) indicate that C. anceps is not most closely related to other putative subspecies of C. westwoodi, i. e., C. westwoodi westwoodi (Newport, 1844) and C. w. elegans Kraepelin, 1903. Rather than recognizing a polyphyletic species, we return C. w. anceps to species rank.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFA0FFE7FF56AAB5FE03FD22.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Rhysida immarginata (Porat, 1876), with types from the Philippines, has in recent years included the western African R. togoensis Kraepelin, 1903, as a subspecies (R. immarginata togoensis) (e. g., Lewis 2001 a). 03B68458FFA1FFE5FF56AFAEFB03FF56.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The specimen from Tanazania is the northernmost record of C. cupipes. It possesses the distinctive ultimate leg proportions of the species as well as the typical divergent paramedian sutures on the cephalic plate (cf. Lewis 2001 a: fig. 9), eight glabrous antennal articles, 4 + 4 coxosternal teeth (tooth plate shape as in Lewis 2001 a: Fig. 11) complete paramedian sutures from T 2, a complete median suture on the tergite of the ultimate leg-bearing segment, a longitudinal median depression on the sternite of the ultimate leg-bearing segment, two apical spines on the coxopleural process, two spines on the distomedial prefemoral process, and the ultimate leg prefemur lacking accessory claws. Compared to other documented material, the ultimate leg prefemur bears relatively few spines (DM 1, VM 1 / 2, VL 2 / 3) and the prefemur, femur and tibia are not conspicuously punctate.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFA2FFE3FF56AD40FEC7F8C9.taxon	discussion	Remarks. A specimen from Pemba Island, Zanzibar, corresponds to C. westwoodi westwoodi sensu Schileyko and Stagl (2004), who also assigned a specimen from that island to this subspecies. The latter specimen had been determined by Attems as C. dispar Porat, 1871, a species placed in synonymy with C. westwoodi by Koch (1983) and followed by Schileyko and Stagl (2004). Among characters known to vary within C. westwoodi westwoodi, the NHM specimen has the following combination: margination from T 5; tergite of ultimate leg-bearing segment with median suture incomplete posteriorly; sternite of ultimate leg-bearing segment with concave posterior margin; coxopleural process bearing two apical spines and a lateral spine; ultimate leg prefemur with 2 + 2 VL spines; two curved spines on distomedial prefemoral process; ultimate leg pretarsus as long as tarsus 2, and small pretarsal accessory claws.	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D. 03B68458FFAAFFECFF56AD60FB9DFEC4.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Scolopocryptops ferrugineus has been assigned many records in the Neotropics (Pocock 1905; Attems 1930; Kraus 1957; Chagas-Juniór 2003, among others), but these represent a diagnosibly distinct species from the West African types (Chagas-Júnior 2008). Scolopocryptops mexicanus Humbert and Saussure, 1869, is the oldest available name for Neotropical “ ferrugineus ” (Chagas-Júnior 2008).	en	Simaiakis, Stylianos Michail, Edgecombe, Gregory D.
