Crambicybolomia similis sp. n.

Description of adult (Fig. 6): Wingspan 16 – 19 mm.

Head beige, labial and maxillary palpus erect, thickly scaled. Antenna about ⅔ length of wing, whitish scales dorsally, brown on sides ventrally pubescent; proboscis conspicuous. Thorax and tegulae beige, roughly scaled. Forewing costa very slightly concave, ground colour beige, three blackish marks on costa in outer half of wing, a fine black streak along vein R 1, beneath this line elongate white spots at ⅓ and ⅔, remainder of wing with blackish streaks especially towards termen, a fine brown terminal line, fringe chequered. Hindwing semi-transparent, a weak double line in fringe. Underside of head, thorax and legs whitish.

Male genitalia (fig. 53): Uncus more or less triangular, gnathos almost as long as uncus but more slender with minute spiculation; valva drawn out to a point, sacculus almost parallel sided with inconspicuous apex, process on dorsal side of valva with a strong curved point. Saccus not produced. Aedeagus almost twice length of valva, gently curved, cornuti comprising a number of many short thorns and a cluster of longer ones.

Female genitalia (fig. 87): Ostium cup-shaped, half width of surrounding segment, then waisted, ductus bursae at first sclerotised then long and membranous, corpus bursae spherical with much interior spiculation and a membranous bulla on each side. Overall length of genitalia similar to that of abdomen.

Diagnosis: Very similar to C. ariditatis but having two elongate white spots above fold in the forewing. Male genitalia very distinct in the process arising from the valva differing greatly from the fibula of ariditatis . In the female the shape of the ostial chamber is diagnostic.

Life history: not known.

Derivation: named from its superficial similarity to ariditatis , the previous species.

A moderately sized genus characterised by the dark band on the hindwings which forms a continuum with the abdomen when specimens are at rest with their abdomen slightly raised. The male genitalia are complex with structures arising from the base of the vinculum. Those whose biology is known feed on Oleaceae .

HENDECASIS was described by Hampson (1896) on the basis of differences in the palpi, but it is clear his description of this genus was based only on a female with “palpi porrect, straight and nearly naked, about three times length of head” which is contrasted with TRICHOPHYSETIS with a description of a male: “palpi porrect, about twice as long as head, and thickly tufted with hair”. He also describes Hendecasis palpi as having maxillary palpi triangularly scaled, quoted also by Shibuya (1931). I have not been able to discern anything that matches that description, here again the distinction appears to be between sexes or differences at specific level. Differences in venation are minor whereas the general plan of the genitalia is consistent among species, hence HENDECASIS is placed in the synonymy of TRICHOPHYSETIS .

Redescription of adult.

Imago (fig. 32): Wingspan 14–16 mm. Head and appendages pale ochreous brown often speckled with darker scales, palpi porrect, maxillary palpus length approximately equal to diameter of eye, labial palpus less than twice diameter of eye. Thorax and tegulae pale ochreous brown. Forewing ground colour pale ochreous brown sometimes suffused with dark scales, an irregular oblique fascia meeting costa at 2/5, a second irregular fascia meeting costa at ⅔, between them a double discal spot, sometimes obsolete, also some blackish scales on costa, a series of blackish spots before termen, fringe shining fuscous including a fringe line. Hindwing pale fuscous, a series of dots along termen, fringe as forewing. Abdomen with first three segments velvety ochreous, remaining segments as thorax. Hind leg with conspicuous dark fuscous scale tuft.

Male genitalia (fig. 69): Uncus tapered, gnathos digitate of similar length to uncus, valva broad near base then almost parallel sided, a small process on ventral surface before apex. Aedeagus gently curved, a cornutus half its length with terminal half serrate.

Female genitalia (fig. 97): Ostium conical, weak, antrum cylindrical, ductus narrow ⅔ length of abdomen, a little wider and scobinate before corpus, junction with corpus bursae with a broad sclerotised belt, corpus spherical, a bull almost as large on one side.

Diagnosis: Superficially very similar to P. calamochroa and P. lucipara but distinguished by the blackish scale tuft on the hind tibia and in the characters of the male genitalia.

Ptychopseustis lucipara Mey, 2011

Description of adult (see also Mey, 2011).

Imago (fig. 38): Wingspan 13–16 mm. Head and appendages pale brown, maxillary palpus porrect, about half length of labial palpus, labial palpus of male terminating in blackish upturned scales, in female porrect, simple; antenna with shining ochreous white scales on dorsal surface. Thorax and tegulae very pale ochreous. Forewing ground colour pale orange-brown with a few scattered darker scales, male with a hair pencil arising from near base of costa, fascia of shining silvery brown at ⅓ oblique at costa, irregular and becoming weak or obsolete towards dorsum, a second similar fascia meeting costa at ⅔, a few blackish dots along termen, fringe shining fuscous with a weak fringe line. Abdomen and legs pale ochreous.

Male genitalia (fig. 73): Uncus rounded, gnathos similar, valva almost parallel sided, shortly before apex a projection terminating in a spike, specialised setae arising from near vinculum, two on each side with curled apex, the remainder with a small swelling with fine spines as apex. Aedeagus of similar length to valva, one long cornutus half length of aedeagus, with its basal ⅔ serrated, four smaller cornuti.

Female genitalia (fig. 101): Ovipositor very long, apophyses anterior and posterior together of similar length to abdomen, ostium membranous, colliculum a weakly sclerotised cylinder, ductus bursae very narrow, broadening slightly and spiculate before corpus, then a broad sclerite half width of corpus bursae, corpus with fine sclerotised ridges, a membranous bulla on each side.

Diagnosis: Distinguished by the scale pencil at the base of the forewing costa of the male and in the female genitalia by the very long ovipositor. In both sexes the pale scales on the hind tibia, without a tuft of dark scales, distinguish it from many other species.

Hindwing of similar colour to forewing, slightly darker apically, a fuscous costal spot on costa (more conspicuous on underside), fringe as forewing. Hind leg blackish at base and with a large and small tuft of scales on tibia blackish mixed pale fuscous.

Male genitalia (fig. 75): Uncus tapered and rounded, gnathos half length of uncus, evenly coniform, valva with sides parallel, apex rounded, a small process arising near costa before apex on inner (ventral) side, vinculum bearing a cluster of about six specialised setae on each side, half of them curved towards apex, the other half sharply angled before apex. Aedeagus curved, small spines near apex, bearing a long serrate cornutus about ⅓ lenght of aedeagus.

Female genitalia (fig. 106): Ostium membranous, colliculum sclerotised, ductus bursae about ⅔ length of abdomen, abruptly widening before corpus bursae, corpus spherical mostly covered with small sclerotised ridges.
