This species was previously considered a synonym of A. schlichii (Stebbing, 1914) by Wood (1989). Amasa brevipennis is very similar in appearance to A. striatotruncata (Schedl, 1971) which until recently was also considered a synonym of A. schlichii (Smith et al. 2020b) . The holotype of X. brevipennis (NHMUK) and a paralectotype of X. striatotruncatus (NHMUK) were directly compared by SMS. Amasa brevipennis can be distinguished from A. striatotruncata by the following combination of characters ( A. brevipennis given first): declivital interstriae punctate and unarmed vs. interstriae impunctate and granulate on apical half of interstriae 1; all interstriae uniformly convex vs declivital interstriae 1 feebly inflated; circumdeclivital ring smooth and unarmed vs circumdeclivital ring with weakly serrate margin on apical third.

Distribution. Amasa fulgens was previously considered a synonym of Amasa resecta (Eggers, 1927) by Hulcr & Cognato (2013: 31). Smith et al. (2020a) considered this synonymy to be incorrect but did not formally recognize the species. Images of the holotype (NHMW) taken by J. Hulcr, and an image of a nontype specimen determined by Schedl and taken by WS, were examined. Amasa fulgens is clearly distinct from A. resecta and can be distinguished by the following characters ( A. fulgens given first): antennal club flat, without sutures (type 5) vs. antennal club flat with three sutures on anterior face (type 4); posterior face of protibiae without granules vs. posterior face of protibiae granulate; declivital interstriae densely setose, bearing 2–4 rows of semirecumbent hair-like setae vs. declivity glabrous.

Distribution. The males of most xyleborines are much smaller than the females, weakly sclerotized, with reduced eyes and non-functional hind wings. However, in a few genera, e.g. Cyclorhipidion, this is not the case. The males of Cyclorhipidion can be recognised by their relatively large size, well-sclerotized body, and characteristic habitus. The head is large, semiprognathous, the mandibles large and powerful, but the eyes and antennae reduced in size relative to the female. The pronotum is elongate, usually as long as or longer than the elytra, widest in the anterior quarter, the sides straight or slightly emarginate, the posterior angles rounded, convex dorsally without an impression anteriorly, nor a median projection of the anterior margin. The elytra are relatively short, rounded posteriorly, the declivity convex without distinct sculpture. The protibiae are curved with a row of strong, socketed teeth on the outer margin extending almost to the base. The description of Xyleborus impar indicates that it clearly possesses the characteristics of Cyclorhipidion males, and the species is here transferred to that genus. The female of C. impar is likely to have been described under a different name. However, males of the great majority of species of Cyclorhipidion are still unknown, and male and female need to be collected in association for a definite association to be made.

Distribution. The species is transferred to Cyclorhipidion because of the following characteristics: most of body covered with dense pubescence and very abundant minute punctures; elytral disc with confused interstrial punctures; pronotum and elytra rounded, with no conspicuous edges or carinas; visible scutellum; contiguous procoxae; and lack of mycangial tufts. C. inaequale is very similar in form to C. pelliculosum (Eichhoff, 1878) and C. inarmatum (Eggers, 1923) (Schedl 1934) .

Distribution. Terminalinus terminaliae Hopkins, 1915 .

Fortiborus Hulcr & Cognato 2010: 17 . syn. nov.

Type species. Xyleborus major Stebbing, 1909 .

Remarks. Hopkins (1915) erected Terminalinus for two Philippine species described from singleton specimens, T. terminaliae and T. dipterocarpi Hopkins, 1915, and defined his genus as having a 5-segmented funicle; club wider than long, anterior face with two bisinuate sutures, posterior face with one procurved suture; eyes large, coarse, elliptical, acutely emarginate. Schedl (1952b: 162) examined a severely damaged specimen and a single elytron of purported T. terminaliae specimens but did not state how this species was identified. Based on his observations, he placed the genus in synonymy with Xyleborus Eichhoff, 1864 . Later in a paper on American Scolytidae, Wood (1986: 267) examined the T. terminaliae holotype, compared it to species in his collection, concluded the genus was valid, and included an additional nine species (many treated below). In their catalog of the world fauna, Wood & Bright (1992) omitted Wood’s (1986) recognition of Terminalinus and references of these combinations, and the included species were moved to Cyclorhipidion and Xyleborus without comment. Likely due to this catalog omission, and Wood’s (1986) recognition of the Indo-Malayan Terminalinus in a paper on the American fauna, this prior taxonomic action was not rediscovered by subsequent researchers. Unaware of this past action, Hulcr & Cognato (2010) erected a new genus, Fortiborus (2010), for the same species group but did not include T. terminaliae . Our examination of the T. terminaliae holotype (NMNH) shows that it unambiguously fits the concept of Fortiborus and therefore we place Fortiborus in synonymy with the older name, Terminalinus . The generic diagnoses of both genera also overlap.

The diagnosis of Terminalinus is that of Fortiborus given by Hulcr & Cognato (2010) and elaborated upon by Smith et al. (2020a). Species of Terminalinus are distinguished by their large size, 4.4−7.1 mm; pronotum robust, elytral declivity flattened and broadened laterally, apex angulate; anterior edge of pronotum extended anteriad, bearing a distinct row of serrations; antennal club distinctly pubescent, type 4; eyes very large, deeply emarginate, apex often acute; scutellum flat, flush with elytra; procoxae contiguous; and mycangial tufts absent.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B187C9325CFFAC69D9066F6C6DFD48	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
