SANTO 2006 Expedition, 7 October 2006 ; all det. C. McLay, ca. 2011.

Remarks. Cryptodromia hirsuta was described by Borradaile (1903) from the Maldives and has since been synonymized under C. fallax (Latreille, in Milbert, 1812), described from Réunion Island (McLay 1993, 2003). Examination of the type material of C. fallax and representative specimens in the ZRC, suggests that it is probably a species complex. The neotype of C. fallax is deposited in the MNHN (Cleva et al. 2007: 240, fig. 7C), and the shape of the carapace and the dentition of the anterolateral margins differ with the present material from Lakshadweep (Fig. 2A). The carapace of the neotype is more globose and the first two anterolateral teeth are distinctly separated. In the Lakshadweep material, the carapace is relatively flatter and more trapezoidal in outline, with the first two anterolateral teeth fused. Likewise, Borradaile’s figure of C. hirsuta (Borradaile, 1903: pl. 33 fig. 3A) shows the first two anterolateral teeth separate from each other. In all three cases, the median rostral tooth is not much narrower than the adjacent lateral teeth. The Lakshadweep specimens, however, are smaller than the types of C. fallax (CW: 13.3 mm) or C. hirsuta (CW: 8.0 mm), which could explain the minor differences in morphology. We therefore, follow McLay’s (1993) synonymization of C. hirsuta Borradaile under C. fallax (Latreille) for the time being.

More substantial differences distinguish the Lakshadweep specimens from C. fallax collected from the western Pacific (e.g. Guam and Vanuatu): the median rostral tooth is only slightly narrower than the two lateral teeth (versus median tooth much narrower than the laterals in the Pacific material), the supraorbital teeth are relatively blunt and positioned closer together (versus more acute and spaced further apart in the Pacific material), and the infraorbital tooth is subtruncate (versus more acutely triangular in the Pacific material). It is very likely that the Pacific material is not conspecific with C. fallax; this will require a more thorough examination of the available material and synonyms, which are beyond the scope of the present work.

This species has been recorded from Lakshadweep by Dev Roy & Nandi (2005). Among the present specimens, the smaller male (5.6 x 5.0 mm) from Minicoy was collected carrying a colonial ascidian.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFD1FFDB9CD3F8CEFB01EFA2	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The species was first described based on material collected from Minicoy (Lakshadweep) and Male Atoll (Maldives) by Borradaile (1903c), with Gordon (1940) redescribing the species and figuring its gonopods for the first time. The species was subsequently listed by Dev Roy & Nandi (2005). Nevertheless, E. gracilis is not well known, so the types are figured here. Borradaile (1903c) and Gordon (1940) did not designate a holotype for E. gracilis so all the three specimens are syntypes. The male from Male Atoll is here selected as the lectotype of the species.

Gordon (1940) compared E. gracilis with the similar E. sindensis Alcock, 1900, and E. mathoei (Desmarest, 1823) from the Indian Ocean and showed they were distinct in several carapace, ambulatory leg and G1 characters (see also Ng & Chuang 1996). The carapace shape varies slightly, with the lectotype male proportionately longer and the anterolateral margins slightly more concave (Fig. 3A) than in other specimens; the female carapace may also be proportionally wider (Fig. 3B, C).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFD4FFDD9CD3FE5BFDB0EF78	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. A new record for Lakshadweep. The present specimen of E. rugosus is a juvenile, but it already has the rugosities on the areolae of the dorsal surface of the carapace and the prominent outwardly directed projection on the carpus of the cheliped, a character typical for the species (cf. Guinot-Dumortier 1960; Serene 1984). The only other Indian record of E. rugosus is that of Dev Roy & Nandi (2012) from the Nicobar and Andaman Islands. Given the similarity of the present species with E. exsculptus (Herbst, 1790), previous records of E. exsculptus by Rao et al. (1989) and Bakus (1994) will need to be verified.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFD9FFD39CD3F882FD63EBFA	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The sole specimen from Minicoy is a female, so its identification is tentative until a male specimen can be collected for confirmation. Nevertheless, it is identified as L. laevis on the basis of the absence of a groove separating 2F+1M from 2M, the relatively shallow and poorly defined furrow separating 3M from 2M, and the poorly defined posterior boundaries of 2L+3L and 5L+6L (viz. Serène & Nguyen 1960; Serne 1984). This species is also quite similar to L. tristis, which has previously been recorded from Lakshadweep (Thomas 1969; Dev Roy 2008). The taxonomy of these two species will need to be reviewed. The present specimen of L. laevis represents a new record for Lakshadweep, the species having been previously found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by Dev Roy & Nandi (2005).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFDAFFD39CD3FE12FE38E83A	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. It can, however, be confused with the similar G. tenuicrustatus (Herbst, 1783), but easily separated by a number of frontal margin, cheliped and male pleonal differences: the frontal margin is smooth and entire (serrated in G. tenuicrustatus); the chelae have a purple tinge, and the inner angle of the cheliped carpus has an acutely triangular tooth (chelae dark brown, and inner angle of cheliped carpus has a broader tooth with a subtruncate base in G. tenuicrustatus); the sixth pleonal somite is shorter than the fifth (sixth pleonal somite longer than the fifth in G. tenuicrustatus) (viz. Banerjee 1960; Ng 1998).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFDCFFD49CD3F804FC4DEA8A	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. The distinctive characters identifying the megalopa as a species of Percnon are the carapace outline, the three long rostral spines on the anterior of the carapace, and the short spines on the ventral (flexor) margin of the ambulatory dactyli. It resembles the megalopa of the Atlantic species, Percnon gibbesi (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) (cf. Paula & Hartnoll 1989: 31, fig. 11), but the carapace of the present specimen is much narrower and the legs are relatively longer. It is difficult to ascertain which of the two preceding, sympatric species of Percnon it belongs to, as megalopal differences between the species have not been documented.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFDDFFD49CD3F91CFC48ECF9	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Ocypode ceratophthalmus (Pallas, 1772) as currently understood is a species complex, currently under study by P.J.F. Davie, H.-T. Shih and P.K.L. Ng, with three genetically distinct forms present in the Indian Ocean. Two are the commonly recognised white-and-maroon morphs and are morphologically close, but can be separated by details of the stridulatory apparatus on its chela. One white-maroon morph represents Ocypode ceratophthalmus sensu stricto, which occurs on islands as well as continental landmasses as well as in most of Southeast Asia and East Asia. The second white-maroon morph is known mostly from isolated islands and appears allied to O. pallidula Hombron & Jacquinot, 1846 . Whether it is a new species or there is older name now listed under its extensive synonymy will need to be established. The third morph is the most distinct, with a prominent green to greenishyellow coloration in life and a diagnostic stridulatory structure on its chela. This green morph is almost certainly a new species and is known only from islands in the Indian Ocean (see also Orchard 2012; Ma et al. 2018).

All the material observed in the islands were of the green morph. The species was also observed on eight islands: viz; Agatti, Kavaratti, Amini, Chetlat, Androth, Bitra, Kilton and Kalpeni but specimens were not collected.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFDFFFD69CD3FDEBFA13EFA3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. A new record from Lakshadweep. The identity of the Indian material referred to this species (see Trivedi et al. 2018)requires confirmation. There are slight differences in the chela and gonopods of material from the Indian Ocean and the east Pacific (where P. pictum s. str. occurs), suggesting there may be more than one species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03BA87FBFFDFFFD69CD3FF1EFF4FEA8B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
