In the original description of Pachycheles chubutensis by Boschi (1963), the telson is composed of 7 plates in males and usually 5 plates in females, and in some female specimens, two small posterior plates partially subdivided. Bremec & Cazzaniga (1984) mentioned that almost all the females examined possess the telson of 7 plates. In the present material, we observed the occurrence of 7 plates in both males and females, and in few specimens had one of the posterior plates partially subdivided. On the other hand, Harvey & De Santo (1996) mentioned that, although the dorsal surface of carpus and palm of the cheliped is usually covered with dense setae, this character considerably varies in our specimens and some of them lack setae.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B887D23E7AFFC9FF2FE1D869789867	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The number of plates on the telson has shown considerable variation: many males have 7 plates, although some have only 5 plates; females possess 7 plates, 5 or partially subdivided posterior plates.

Remarks. It is an endemic species, known only from Brazil. Pachycheles greeleyi resembles P. chacei Haig, 1956 and P. serratus (Benedict, 1901) in the entire granulation on the chelipeds and dentition on the flexor margin of the cheliped carpus. However, P. greeleyi has more coarsely granulate carapace and more rugose and pubescent walking legs. Additionally, P. greeleyi has no gonopods in males, whereas P. chacei has one pair of gonopods in males and 5 telson plates. P. serratus presents a pubescent carapace and a pair of gonopods in males (Ferreira & Melo 2010).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B887D23E79FFC9FF2FE6B66C469CED	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Also found on intertidal region, under rocks, on corals, sponges, reefs built by Phragmatopoma lapidosa, mussel beds and oysters, and seems to prefer calm waters (Werding 1977; Veloso & Melo 1993; Micheletti-Flores & Negreiros-Fransozo 1999) down to 60 m.

Geographic distribution. Western Atlantic—USA, Connecticut, North Carolina, Georgia, eastern and western Florida, Louisiana, Texas; Bermuda; Mexico, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche and Quintana Roo; Belize; Costa Rica, Gulf of Nicoya; Panama, Bocas del Toro, Colón and Caledonia Bay; Bermuda; Bahamas; Cuba; Jamaica; Puerto Rico; Virgin Islands; Colombia, Punta Calixto and Rosario Island; Venezuela, Curacao, Blanquilla, Cubagua and Margarita Islands; and Brazil (Fernando de Noronha Island and from Pará to Santa Catarina). Eastern Atlantic—Ascensão Island; Gibraltar; Senegal and Angola. Eastern Pacific—from Gulf of California to Ecuador (Galapagos Islands); and Peru.

Variation. Populations of different localities have shown considerable intraspecific morphological variation. Basically, the palm of the cheliped varies from narrow to broad and a row of spines and setae on extensor margin of propodus may be present or absent. Besides, the number of flexor teeth on the cheliped carpus varies from 1 to 4.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B887D23E75FFC4FF2FE2A468EF9EFC	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Eastern Pacific—El Salvador; Nicaragua, Estero Asserradores; Costa Rica, San Lucas Island; Panama, Tobaguilla Island, Limón Bay and Panama City; and Ecuador, La Liberdad.

Variation. Considerable color variations have been reported for Petrolisthes galathinus by several authors (e.g., Benedict 1901; Rickner 1975; Abele & Kim 1989; Williams 1984). Werding (1977) was the first author to recognize the presence of different forms in the western Atlantic which were morphologically very similar but distinguishable by the detailed color pattern. These findings lead the author to describe P. rosariensis Werding, 1978, P. c ar i be n s i s Werding, 1983 and P. columbiensis Werding, 1983, and referred these species to the “ P. galathinus complex”. Later, material of two additional color forms from the Caribbean coast of Colombia are described as P. sanmartini Werding & Hiller, 2002 and P. bolivarensis Werding & Kraus, 2002 . Currently, the “ P. galathinus species complex” consists of these six species which are morphologically distinguished by a combination of discrete differences, such as colour pattern, epibranchial spine, number of spines on the dactylus of walking legs and pubescence in the gape of cheliped fingers.

Remarks. Bosc (1802) originally described Petrolisthes galathinus (as Porcellana), but did not designated neither a type-specimen nor a type-locality. Gibbes (1854) suggested that the original material must have been from the southern Atlantic coast of USA.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B887D23E74FFC3FF2FE1156F439E44	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. However, the initial description and illustration of Petrolisthes sp I by Werding (1977) was enough to recognize the species.

Petrolisthes rosariensis is very similar to P. galathinus, but different from the latter mainly by the presence of two epibranchial spines (one epibranchial spine in P. galathinus) on lateral margins of the carapace; shape of the extensor margin of cheliped propodus (more convex on P. galathinus); and the lack of pubescence in the gape of the cheliped fingers (Werding 1982).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B887D23E72FFC2FF2FE66E6F579C88	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Carapace sligtly longer than broad, grained, with lateral rugae, especially on posterobranchial region. Front distinctly trilobate, median lobe broader than lateral lobes. Outer orbital angle produced into broad tooth. Chelipeds subequal, robust, compressed, with few ridges; carpus with proximal lobe on flexor margin, distal spine on extensor margin; propodus broad, fringed with long setae on extensor margin. Walking legs striated, pubescent; propodus with 3 spines on flexor margin, dactylus with 3 or 4 spines on flexor margin. Gonopods present in males. Telson composed of 7 plates.

Habitat. Crevices in oysters’ clusters and commensal with hermit crabs and gastropods, or free living, on sandy, muddy and shell bottoms (Veloso 1999) down to depths of 100 m.

Geographic distribution. Western Atlantic—USA, North and South Carolina, Georgia, eastern and western Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas; Mexico, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo; Belize, Twin Cays; Panama, Caledonia Bay; Bahamas; Cuba; Jamaica; Puerto Rico; Virgin Islands; Antigua; Barbados; Colombia, Gulf of Morrosquillo, La Guajira, Cabo De La Vela and Providence, Rosario and Santa Marta Islands; Venezuela, Blanquilla, Los Roques, Margarita, Cubagua and Coche Islands; Guyana; Suriname; French Guyana; Brazil (from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul); and Uruguay.

Variation. Haig (1966) and Gore (1974) noted that Porcellana sayana has considerable morphological variations. This may be noticed, mainly in the spine-like tooth and size of the proximal lobe on the flexor margin of the carpal chelipeds, presence or absence of the carapace epibranchial spinules, and curvature degree of the extensor margin of the chelipeds propodus.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B887D23E6FFFDFFF2FE4956F1F9F65	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
