105AEE26DA32B239CB183638FA68F8D5.taxon	discussion	8 spp., endemic to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, flowering mainly in spring and summer, typically only after fire. Most specimens are readily assigned to species but hybridisation between species is not uncommon, resulting in a range of intermediate forms that will confuse species identification without field knowledge of the situation. All of the species have ± discrete areas of distribution and this is a valuable adjunct to correct identification. Some species appear to replace one another along a geographical cline, with a blurring of morphological discontinuities in the zones of overlap. This is especially evident in G. tomentosa – G. serrata – G. ovata and G. linnaei – G. serrata.	en	Manning, J. C., Simka, B., Boatwright, J. S., Magee, A. R. 105AEE26DA37B23EC85E35DEFB32FECB.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: distinguished by the crenately incised or lobed leaves (Fig. 2 F) with finely toothed incisions, the upper surface glabrous and the under surface densely whitish-felted, the mostly pink to reddishpurple or magenta rays (Fig. 1 B & C), and the snow white pappus. Populations on the Piketberg are uniformly pink to magenta-flowered (Fig. 1 C) but elsewhere both white-flowered and pink-flowered forms occur. Gerbera crocea, which may also have dark pink to purple rays, has leaves with crenate to sinuate margins and thinly tomentose or subglabrous under surface (Fig. 2 E). Gerbera linnaei, the only other species with markedly incised leaves, has deeply and often quadrately pinnatisect leaves (Fig. 2 B), and glabrous involucral bracts. This species was not completely understood by Hansen (1985), who included most collections known to him in G. crocea, where they are anomalous in their incised leaves with whitish-felted under surface. Two additional collections, Lewis 6211 (NBG) and Martin 332 (NBG) from the Piketberg, which he mistakenly thought were collected on the Cape Peninsula, were suggested to be hybrids G. crocea × G. wrightii, purportedly combining the irregularly sinuate leaves of the former with the scape and leaf tomentum of the latter (Hansen, 1985: 15). In reviewing the species for this account, we identified that these anomalous collections with felted leaf under surface occupy a distinct geographical range largely to the north of typical G. crocea. Typical subglabrous populations of G. crocea have been collected at Sneeugat in the Witzenberg (Phillips 1785, SAM), which we interpret as additional evidence supporting the recognition of the northern, felted populations as a geographically and morphologically distinct species.	en	Manning, J. 105AEE26DA37B23CCB61344EFA3FFAB3.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: recognized by the dentate or irregularly sinuate, usually scarcely discolorous leaves with the under surface glabrous or only thinly tomentose, rarely more densely whitish-felted (Fig. 2 E), and the dark brown to blackish anther appendages. Plants with the leaf under surface more densely felted can be confused with G. tomentosa but that species has a yellowish-tawny indumentum and pale yellow anther appendages. The pappus in most collections of G. crocea is snow white and this is a useful diagnostic character in these instances as most other species have a tawny pappus. A similar white pappus and dark anther appendages are also characteristic of G. sinuata but that species has leaves with more deeply crenate margins and a densely white-felted under surface (Fig. 2 F). G. crocea hybridizes with G. linnaei where they co-occur on the Cape Peninsula.	en	Manning, J. C., Simka, B., Boatwright, J. S., Magee, A. R. (2016): A revised taxonomy of Gerbera sect. 105AEE26DA35B232CB6130C6FF34FC4D.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: diagnosed by at least some leaves on each plant more or less distinctly cordate, although others are sometimes truncate or cuneate at the base, with the under surface densely whitish-felted and the margins subentire to finely toothed (Fig. 2 A). The scapes are often characteristically spotted with small patches of whitish wool (Fig. 1 A). Gerbera wrightii can be confused with forms of G. crocea with the leaf underside more densely tomentose than usual, notably on the Cape Peninsula where they are more or less sympatric. The leaves in G. crocea are typically only weakly discolorous with the under surface of the blade subglabrous or thinly whitish tomentose, and the base of the leaf is attenuate or at least cordate-attenuate and not as markedly cordate as in G. wrightii. 105AEE26DA3BB230CB6131B2FBB0FDFC.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: distinguished by the ± parallel-sided, retrorsely serrate leaves with cuneate or cordate bases and densely yellowish – brownish felted under surface (Figs. 1 F, 2 C). The species typically has ± oblong leaves but populations from Riviersondered and Swellendam are distinctive in their narrow, almost linear leaves 2 – 5 mm wide. Such plants formed the basis for G. asplenifolia var. linearis described by Harvey (1865) and examples with closely notched leaves can be confused with G. linnaei. The leaves are, however, retrorsely notched to toothed and not pinnatisect as in true G. linnaei. Typical G. serrata can also be confused with G. tomentosa from west of Swellendam but that species has elliptic to oblanceolate leaves without parallel sides and distinctive, imbricate involucral bracts not ± arranged in series. 105AEE26DA39B231CB61377BFB67FE9F.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: resembling G. tomentosa in the more or less ovate leaves, densely yellowish – brownish felted on the under surface (Fig. 2 D), and in the golden-brownish felted involucral bracts but differing in the smaller leaves with ± entire blades 30 – 60 mm long, and a subseriate involucre. The leaf margins are typically slightly involute, showing as a raised rusty-felted margin along the leaf upper surface. Gerbera ovata was initially treated as a variety of G. tomentosa (Candolle, 1838) but was later included in that species without rank by Hansen (1985) on account of their similar leaf under surface indumentum. True G. tomentosa occurs much further west, on the Hottentots Holland and adjacent mountains in Western Cape, and has generally larger leaves with serrate to sinuate blades 40 – 150 mm long with revolute margins, and characteristic imbricate bracts not ± arranged in series. The combination of the disjunct distribution and the several morphological differences are clear indications that the eastern populations represent a distinct species.	en	Manning, J. [Note: Harvey (1865) based his name on a solitary specimen from between Riviersonderend and Swellendam, and raised the possibility that it might represent a hybrid between G. crocea (as G. burmanni) and G. serrata (as G. ferruginea), combining the sinuately incised and rufous-felted foliage of the latter with the multi-seriate involucre and white pappus of the former, but Hansen (1985) suggested that it might rather be associated with collections of plants that he identified as of hybrid origin G. crocea × G. tomentosa from between Paarl and Montagu. However, the deeply retrorsely incised-sinuate leaf margins and yellowish-grey felted underside of G. leucothrix are quite consistent with G. tomentosa, which it also matches in its imbricate involucres and whitish pappus. Gerbera tomentosa has been recorded from the Riviersonderend and the Langeberg at Swellendam and we see no reason not to accept that the two are the same, and accordingly place G. leucothrix in synonomy.]	en	Manning, J. 105AEE26DA3FB234C85E341AFE51FC85.taxon	distribution	Distribution and ecology: restricted to the mountains in the extreme southwestern part of Western Cape, from Bainskloof to the Riviersonderend and Kleinrivier Mountains, Bredasdorpberge and western Langeberg above Swellendam (Fig. 9). The species occurs on stony slopes on sandstone, granite or clay, sometimes in marshy or peaty soils, and flowering takes place only after fire. Although Hansen (1985) mapped the species as occurring around Simonstown this is an error and G. tomentosa is not present on the Cape Peninsula. Populations on the Franschhoek and Drakenstein Mountains have bright yellow rays but those elsewhere are typically white to creamcoloured.	en	Manning, J. C., Simka, B., Boatwright, J. S., Magee, A. 105AEE26DA3FB234C85E341AFE51FC85.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: the species is diagnosed by the densely yellowish – brownish felted leaf under surface (Fig. 2 G) and the imbricate involucral bracts (Fig. 1 I), not subseriately arranged as in other species in the genus, and often with conspicuous dark tips. The difference in the involucre is sometimes difficult to assess in the absence of comparative material. The leaves vary in shape from ovate to elliptic and are variously sinuate to serrate or doubly serrate. Gerbera tomentosa is most easily confused with G. serrata, which has ± parallel-sided leaves and a distinctly subseriate involucre, and the two species overlap shortly in their distribution from the Riviersonderend Mountains to the Langeberg near Swellendam. Gerbera tomentosa displays a wide range of variation in leaf morphology and indumentum. Some specimens from the Hottentots Holland Mountains are more densely felted than usual on the scapes and involucral bracts, and this is also especially evident in specimens from Bredasdorp, which have the leaves very densely yellowish – brownish felted. The lower leaf lobes do not usually decrease in size but we have seen one collection with broadly elliptic-obovate leaves with serrulate-lobed margins with the lobes decreasing in size basipetally. Some collections from Worcester (Fig. 1 H) have unusually small leaves, with blades 28 – 35 × 15 – 20 mm, which is not typical for the species.	en	Manning, J. C., Simka, B., Boatwright, J.
