Type species: Tenupalpa angustella (Omelko, 1984) .

Generic characters. Head: With glossy scales. Maxillary palpus 4–articled. Labial palpus slender, strongly recurved, palpomere I very short, palpomere II usually as long as III. Antenna 2/3 length of forewing, male flagellum with long fine cilia.

Thorax: Glossy white, cream or grey, without markings. Legs same color as head; fore femur, tibia, and tarsi dark fuscous on outer surface; hind tibia sometimes dark fuscous at middle and at apex, with long bristles along basal 2/3 of dorsal margin, whorls of bristles at apex. Forewing slender, ground color glossy white, cream, grey, or black, distal 1/3 to 1/4 often with an orange patch, a black apical spot often present; ventral forewing with a group of stiff scales near basal fork of 1A+2A; pterostigma weakly or not developed. Forewing venation (Figs 1, 2) with Sc reaching basal 1/4 or 1/3 of costa, R and Rs 1 free, Rs 2 stalked or connate with Rs 3, M 1 free from or connate with Rs 3, M 2 close to M 3, CuA 1 and CuA 2 free, 1A+2A forked near base. Hindwing narrower than forewing, ground color grey, fuscous- or black; apex acute, often narrowly black-tipped; fringe scales sometimes with a black terminal band. Hindwing venation with R joining Sc beyond base, Rs stalked with M 1 at distal 1/5, M 2 often weak, CuA 1 and CuA 2 parallel, discal cell open.

Abdomen (Figs 3, 4). Male sternum II–VII with sclerotized plates, VIII round, sub-triangular or pentagonal; tergum VIII reduced, with mediolateral coremata, a linear sclerotization between coremata. Male genitalia (Fig. 5) with uncus small and triangular, often with medial ridge. Culcitula usually present. Gnathos short, hook-shaped. Tegumen sub-triangular, usually with round tubercles medially, anterior margin deeply concave. Valva slender and simple, apex rounded, rarely pointed. Anellus lobe well developed, round, oval, or digitate, rarely asymmetrical, typically bearing a long bristle at apex, bristle sometimes strongly developed as a spine. Juxta simple, divided into two lobes, sometimes with a projection. Vinculum simple, often with posterior margin broadly concave. Saccus broad. Aedeagus with bulbous base and slender distal part, often curved distally. Female genitalia (Fig. 6) with papillae anales setose. Apophyses anteriores as long as or shorter than apophyses posteriores. Sternum VIII medially emarginate or convex. Ostium often small, at anterior or posterior margin of sternum VIII. Ductus bursae slender and simple. Corpus bursae elongate oval; signum semilunar or a linear sclerite, sometimes absent.

Distribution. Oriental and Palearctic regions (Fig. 103).

Remarks. Superficially, many species of Tenupalpa are similar to those of Pulchrala in having a white to greyish forewing with an orange distal patch. However, males of Tenupalpa typically have unmodified labial palpi, whereas those of Pulchrala have expansible hair pencils on the dorsal surface. Also, the coremata of Tenupalpa are short and situated mediolaterally on tergum VIII, whereas they are rather long and situated laterally in Pulchrala. The presence of tegumen tubercles, which is typical of Tenupalpa, has been reported elsewhere only in some species of Palumbina within Thiotrichinae .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/1E0387F2FFEBFFC244A8FA97921177B4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species is distinguished by a whitish forewing irregularly marked with light brown at the middle, at the apex, and along the fold. The forewing lacks a black apical spot and a distal patch (Fig. 46). Tenupalpa angustella is somewhat similar to T. nephodesma, but it lacks a transverse fascia on the forewing present in the latter. In the male genitalia, the anellus lobes are strongly developed and bear a robust spinelike bristle. Also, the triangular projection of the juxta, the large saccus, and the long distal part of the aedeagus are diagnostic (Fig. 5). The female genitalia are characterized by a deeply incised posterior margin and a short emarginate anterior margin of tergum VIII, and a small semilunar signum (Fig. 85).

Distribution. China (Beijing, Fujian, Gansu, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Shandong, Zhejiang), Japan, Korea, Russia. This species is newly recorded from China and Korea.

Host plants. Male genitalia (Fig. 72) with uncus small, sub-pentagonal, with a longitudinal ridge medially. Gnathos hook short, acute apically. Tegumen approximately 9 times as long uncus; rounded tubercles at middle, each tubercle bearing a long hair (Fig. 33). Valva with basal 2/3 slender and curved inward, spatulate distally, rounded apically. Anellus lobe approximately 1/3 length of valva, falcate, gradually narrowing to pointed apex, strongly curved inward; subapical bristle arising from middle of anellus lobe, almost reaching apex of anellus lobe. Juxta simple. Vinculum very broad, somewhat trapezoidal. Saccus broad, triangular, rounded apically, not exceeding tegumen pedunculus. Superficially, this species closely resembles T. crassimedia sp. nov., T. acutimedia sp. nov., T. breviaedeaga sp. nov., T. magniguttata sp. nov., T. perparviloba sp. nov., T. uncativalva sp. nov., T. zhengi sp. nov., and T. dissimilis sp. nov., and it is difficult to separate these species based only on external characters. Tenupalpa acutata sp. nov. is differentiated from other species by the shape of male sternum VIII, which is short and sub-rectangular compared to the round or pentagonal-shaped sternum of most other species. The male genitalia are distinguished by the slender valva, often with a minute spine near apex, and the apically pointed aedeagus. The female genitalia are similar to those of T. flavitermina, but the corpus bursae is narrower, and the signum is situated more anteriorly in T. acutata sp. nov.

Description. Adult (Fig. 57). Head: Silvery white, vertex sometimes mixed with grey. Labial palpus silvery white, palpomere II mixed with grey on outer surface; palpomere III as long as II, strongly mixed with fuscous. Antenna with scape silvery white; flagellum dark fuscous except basal half of dorsal surface silvery white, male cilia slightly longer than diameter.

Thorax: Silvery white and light brown mixed. Tegula silvery white and light brown mixed, anterior margin usually suffused with fuscous. Wingspan 6.5–9.5 mm. Forewing silvery white to grey at base, gradually darkening toward apex; sometimes basal 1/3 silvery white and distal 2/3 dark grey; anterior edge of costa black; a large, fusiform orange patch extending along costa after middle, its inner margin nearly pointed, gradually broadened toward distal 1/6 of wing, then narrowed toward apical spot, below this an elongate orange spot on dorsum just after fold; a narrow white line between the patch and apical spot, running from costa to tornus; apical spot large, below this a small, indistinct black spot near tornus, between two spots tinged with orange along termen; fringe scales grey, mixed with cream along distal part of dorsum. Hindwing grey except apex black and near apex cream; fringe scales light grey, apical fringe cream with a black terminal band. Legs silvery white; hind tibia strongly mixed with fuscous after middle; mid- and hind tarsi mixed with fuscous.

Abdomen (Fig. 20): Male coremata as long as sternum VIII; sternum VIII short, sub-rectangular, posterior apex slightly convex medially. Male genitalia (Fig. 76) with uncus small oval, with a longitudinal ridge medially. Gnathos hook short, pointed apically. Tegumen approximately 8–9 times as long as uncus; papilliform tubercles at middle, each tubercle bearing a long single hair (Fig. 37). Valva slender, gradually narrowed from base to middle, then broadening to apex; costa with or without a minute spine before apex, rounded apically. Anellus lobe oval, approximately 1/5 length of valva; apical bristle longer than anellus lobe, sometimes sinuous, curved inward apically. Juxta with inner margin broadly convex, sometimes sinuous in distal half. Vinculum broad, posterior margin rounded. Saccus broad, sub-triangular, sometimes slightly constricted at middle, rounded apically. Aedeagus with basal 1/3 dilated, distal 2/3 slender and sinuous, acute apically. Female genitalia (Fig. 92) with papillae anales simple and setose. Apophyses anteriores 1/3–1/2 length of apophyses posteriores. Tergum VIII with posterior margin deeply incised at middle, bearing a bundle of setae at the cleft; sternum VIII with posterior margin nearly straight, anterior margin convex medially. Ostium bursae round, located at middle of sternum VIII. Ductus bursae slender, slightly broadened after middle; colliculum reduced, situated at posterior 1/3, ductus seminalis arising from posterior 2/5. Corpus bursae elongate ovate, as long as ductus bursae, often constricted medially; signum small semicircular, placed at posterior 1/3.

Distribution. China (Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Zhejiang).

Etymology. The species name is derived from the Latin acutatus (sharpened), referring to the acute apex of the aedeagus.

Variation. Tenupalpa acutata sp. nov. is variable in color pattern, with the forewings of some specimens gradually darkened from the base to the apex, and in others divided into white and grey areas. The termen of T. acutata sp. nov. is usually tinged with orange near the apical spot, and the dorsum is slightly suffused with orange beyond the fold, but these features can also be indistinct. At the same locality, specimens collected in May tend to be larger than those collected in August. In the male genitalia, specimens from Guangxi often lack the small spine near the apex of valva, whereas those from Zhejiang have spines.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/1E0387F2FFF2FFD944A8FC2F93277213	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Holotype ♂, CHINA, Hainan Province, Ledong County, Jianfengling, Tianchi (18.74°N, 108.84°E), 1050 m, 30.iv.2013, leg. Yinghui Sun, Wei Guan and Tengteng Liu, genitalia slide no. LGE 19007 m.

Diagnosis. Tenupalpa dissimilis sp. nov. is similar to congeneric species, as described above, and it is difficult to separate based on the external features alone. However, the male genitalia are unique in the possession of asymmetrical anellus lobes which bear a robust, hook-shaped apical bristle.

Description. Adult (Fig. 65). Head: Denuded of scales. Labial palpus dirty white except palpomere III mixed with fuscous. Antenna with scape dirty white; flagellum dark fuscous except base of dorsal surface mixed with dirty white, male cilia slightly longer than diameter.

Thorax: Dorsum and tegula glossy grey. Wingspan 7.0 mm; forewing grey, anterior edge of costa black in basal half; an elliptical orange patch in distal 1/3 of wing, lying between costa and posterior 1/4, its outer margin almost reaching apical spot; a narrow dirty white line between former patch and apical spot, extending along termen; below apical spot a smaller, somewhat indistinct black spot on termen, between two spots slightly tinged with orange; dorsum suffused with orange beyond fold; fringe scales grey. Hindwing grey, except black at apex and dirty white near apex; fringe scales grey; apical fringe with a black terminal band. Legs silvery white; hind tibia dark grey dorsally; mid- and hind tarsi strongly mixed with dark grey.

Abdomen (Fig. 14): Male coremata nearly as long as sternum VIII; sternum VIII rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 84) with uncus small, obcordate; distal margin deeply incised at middle, a sharp projection arising from the cleft. Gnathos hook moderately long, with basal 1/3 broadened, acute apically. Tegumen approximately 8 times as long as uncus; a set of papilliform tubercles at anterior 1/3, each tubercle bearing a long single hair (Fig. 45). Valva narrowed from base to middle, then broadening toward rounded apex. Anellus lobes different in size: left one much larger, rounded, approximately 1/2 length of valva, right one 1/3 length of valva; apical bristle robust, S-shaped, pointed apically. Juxta simple. Vinculum broad, simple. Saccus short, blunt. Aedeagus with basal 1/2 dilated, narrowed after middle, sinuous apically.

Female unknown.

Distribution. China (Hainan).

Etymology. The species name is derived from the Latin dissimilis (dissimilar), referring to the asymmetrical anellus lobes.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/1E0387F2FFF4FFE044A8F97291057624	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. TL: Pyinmana, Myanmar. TD: NHMUK.

Type material. Holotype ♂, MYANMAR, Pyinmana, 18.iii.[?], leg. T.B.F., genitalia slide no. J. F.G.C. 8380 (NHMUK).

Diagnosis. The forewing pattern of T. xanthodora is quite different from that of its congeners, with the basal 1/3 marked with black and yellow longitudinal streaks (Fig. 98). Other species of Tenupalpa usually have the base uniformly colored without distinct pattern elements. The male genitalia are somewhat similar to those of T. flavitermina and T. acutata sp. nov. in having a sinuous distal part of the aedeagus and oval anellus lobes bearing a long apical bristle. However, the genitalia of T. xanthodora can be distinguished from those of the latter two species by the valva expanded in the apical 1/3 and the larger anellus lobes.

Distribution. Myanmar.

Remarks. The species was originally described in Thiotricha based on a single specimen collected from Myanmar (labeled as Burma). The male genitalia and the abdomen of the holotype housed in NHMUK are characteristic of Tenupalpa: small uncus, tegumen bearing a bundle of tubercles (Fig. 100), rounded sternum VIII, and short external coremata (Fig. 102). Based on these morphological traits, we propose the new combination, T. xanthodora (Meyrick, 1923) comb. nov.

In our previous work (Lee et al. 2021), we incorrectly transferred Thiotricha glenias Meyrick, 1908, to Tenupalpa . Thiotricha glenias is superficially similar to Tenupalpa species in wing pattern and coloration; however, its male possesses an expansible hair pencil dorsally on the labial palpus, setae are present on the dorsal surface of the tegumen, and tegumen tubercles are absent. These features are characteristic of many species of Thiotricha and Pulchrala. The generic position of the species requires further study, but the combination of morphological characters is certainly not typical of Tenupalpa . Therefore, we propose Thiotricha glenias stat. rev., resurrected from combination with Tenupalpa .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/1E0387F2FFCAFFE044A8FC0B91EA725E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
