Pham (2004) provided a description of this species in Vietnamese under the name of ‘ Pomponia sp.’ with an illustration of the male genitalia. Based on photographs provided by H.T. Pham, the external morphology of this species appears almost identical to that of Pomponia linearis . However, as shown in the figure by Pham (2004), the spines of the clasper of the male genitalia are different: the lateral and the medial spines of this species are about the same length while the lateral spine of P. linearis is distinctly longer than its medial spine. The identity of this species requires further studies.

46. S. Vietnam and Thailand.

Remarks. Photographs of this species (Fig. 1) contributed by The Natural History Museum, London suggest that it is allied to and congeneric with Pomponia picta (Walker, 1868) (type species) and Pomponia linearis (Walker, 1850) due to the similarity in the following characteristics: shapes of forewing apical cells; shape of dentate lateral margin of pronotal collar; shape of timbal cover; shape and coloration of dorsal and ventral abdomen; sharp pointed upper lobes of pygofer. However, the species is distinguishable from P. picta and P. linearis by its smaller body size (35 mm as in the original description by Distant (1912a)) and by the opercula widely separated and not wider than long.

This species does not belong to the Pomponia linearis species group proposed by Duffels & Hayashi (2006) due to the following: postclypeus with two symmetrical series of thin, transverse fuscous lines on underside instead of a broad transverse band across postclypeus; opercula widely separated and not wider than long. The latter characteristic suggests that this species may not be closely allied to Pomponia picta, either.

The type locality of this species is “ Cochin China ”, which is equivalent to the present southern Vietnam, but the specimen preserved in The Natural History Museum, London and shown in Fig. 1 is labeled as “Luang-Prabang // a Theng Pavie 1888”. Luang-Prabang is presently a province of Laos, which is far north of southern Vietnam. This discrepancy could have arisen from mislabeling or confusion of geographical concepts. Because the original description of this species by Distant (1912a) gives exact values, rather than ranges, for morphological measurements, the description implies that only one male specimen was available to Distant. The description indicates that the depository of the type specimen was “Brit. Mus.” (= The Natural History Museum, London). As there are no other specimens or syntypes of this species in the Museum (M. Webb, pers. comm.), this specimen is apparently the holotype, fixed by monotypy (73.1.2, ICZN).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/233E87B5FF826C40B7E3F8CCFAF87955	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Type species: Dundubia nicomache Walker, 1850 (North India). Aola Distant, 1905a: 69 . Type species: Pomponia bindusara Distant, 1881 . syn. nov.

Remarks. The genus Aola Distant, 1905 was established based mainly on the following characteristics distinguishable from allied genera: postclypeus prominent anterad; abdomen short, about as long as distance from head to cruciform elevation; opercula short, not or scarcely extending beyond sternite II and not covering lateral margins of timbal covers. However, only the last characteristic (operculum shape) is effective for distinguishing this genus from the closely allied genera, Haphsa and Meimuna .

So far only Aola bindusara (Distant, 1881), as the type species, has been placed in this genus. However, the peculiar shape of the operculum of Aola bindusara is thought to be an infrageneric, not intergeneric, variation. Beuk (2002) argued that Aola bindusara should form a monophyletic group together with Haphsa nicomache (Walker, 1850), the type species of Haphsa, together with some other species currently placed in Haphsa and Meimuna . Therefore, Aola is synonymized here with Haphsa, placing bindusara in Haphsa .

Pomponia scitula Distant, 1888, once a member of Aola but placed in Pomponia again by China (1925), is also placed here in Haphsa because the above-mentioned main characteristics of Aola are present in this species although the shape of the operculum is peculiar. Again, this is interpreted as an infrageneric variation of Haphsa .

65. This genus is distinguishable from its allied genera, especially from Platylomia Stål, 1870, by the following characteristics: body robust and thick; eyes not prominent laterally; head including eyes about as wide as or narrower than base of mesonotum; postclypeus a little prominent anteriorly, shorter than vertex in mid-dorsal length in dorsal view; ventral side of postclypeus, in many species, with distinct fuscous or black central band longitudinally which diverges at anterior end; pronotal collar well developed and broad; mid lateral tooth of pronotal collar produced laterally or posterolaterally, not anterolaterally; male operculum long with comparatively acute apex and swollen at about posterior 2/3; forewing slender with sharp tip, its length longer than 3.2× width. See also Lee & Hayashi (2003a).

In view of these characteristics, Platylomia divergens, Platylomia assamensis, Platylomia diana, Platylomia saturata and Platylomia pieli are here placed in Macrosemia .

70.
