The spelling viaginalis in 1885 was probably a printers’ error as the shell was described as being pure white. Forcelli (2000) gave color illustrations of most species, but they are not captioned. The figures are placed immediately below the discussion of the species. At the top of his page 107 there is a figure immediately following the discussion of Admete frigida but is a different species, unknown me. The shell figured may be the same specimen figured by Castellanos & Landoni (1992: pl. 3, fig. 20) as A. cf. australis (Philippi, 1856 [sic; =1855]) with “ C. schythei? Phil., 1856 ” in synonymy. Forcelli’s discussion of Admete schythei (Philippi, 1856 [sic; = 1855]) on page 106 is followed by a figure of what appears to be Admete frigida Rochebrune & Mabille. Hemmen (2007) copied and enlarged Rochebrune & Mabille’s figures of Admete frigida but captioned them as “From Forcelli (2000) after Rochebrune & Mabille (1889).” Hemmen’s second figure of “ Admete frigida ” is the copy from Forcelli.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/294387FBFFD56C6FFF0BFF5EFB4EC542	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. He discarded an earlier type designation of E. membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille as he considered that species to be unidentifiable and a nomen dubium, and declared the other included species, Octopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852 to be the type “by virtual monotypy.” His action was effectively “fixation by elimination” which is inadmissible under Article 69.4 of the Code (I.C.Z.N. 1999) [Article 69b of the Code in effect in 1998 (I.C.Z.N. 1985)]. As at least one author is stated to have considered the Rochebrune & Mabille species to be a synonym of Gould’s species, there should be no problem as the type species will simply be a junior synonym. However, Article 69a of the 1985 Code applies and no type designation after the first is valid. The type species may be cited as E. membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille by subsequent designation of Hoyle, 1910 = Octopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852.] Resolution of this issue is left to cephalopod systematists.

Enteroctopus membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille, 1889: H.7. All included species are listed alphabetically by species-group name. In an Appendix discussing “insufficiently described chitons, and species of unknown generic position” Pilsbry (1894) listed many Rochebrune species including some of the Magallanic taxa listed herein. He singled out Rochebrune for criticism, a portion of which is quoted here:

“The various memoirs by Rochebrune describe a multitude of supposed new forms, but so incompletely that only in rare instances can they be recognized, and even the genus can scarcely be ascertained from his descriptions. In his use of the generic terms of Gray and others he has been most unfortunate, employing them correctly in but few cases. … The names Schizochiton, Leptochiton,

Onithochiton, etc. are used in a variety of senses, or with no sense at all; but in no case, so far as I can learn, for the groups correctly so termed.” – (Pilsbry 1894: 92-93)

Choetopleura [sic] ahnni Rochebrune, 1884: 34.

Locality: “Pounta-Arenas (mission Lebrun, Patagonie). – Commun.”

Remarks: Listed by Pilsbry (1894: 112) in his section on “insufficiently described chitons” stated that “This and the preceding [veneris] belong to the genus Plaxiphora. Rochebrune ignores them in his later publication on Cape Horn Polyplacophora.” See C. hahni below.

Acanthochiton couthouyi Rochebrune, 1889: H.133; new name for Chiton castaneus Couthouy in Gould, 1852, non W. Wood, 1815.

Locality: “Port Orange (Brésil). Teste Gould. Détroit de Magellan, Mission du Cap Horn. – Rare.” Remarks: Treated as a synonym of “ Chiton castaneus (Couthouy) Gld. ” by Pilsbry (1894: 113) although he had earlier (Pilsbry 1892c: 52) listed Chiton castaneus Wood, 1815. Both are indicated in the index as valid. He included Rochebrune’s replacement name in his discussion. Placed in synonymy of Hemiarthrum setulosum Dall, 1876 by Castellanos (1988: 8 [sic; = 7]).

Lepidopleurus culliereti Rochebrune, 1889: H.140, pl. 9, fig. 5a–b.

Locality: “ Terre de Feu. Baie Orange. Peu commun.”

Remarks: Listed by Pilsbry (1894: 111) in his section on “insufficiently described chitons.” Treated as a valid species by Castellanos (1988: 5) and Forcelli (2000: 177) but considered by Sirenko (2006: 87–88) to be a nomen dubium.

Chiton dimorphus Rochebrune, 1889: H.142, pl. 9, fig. 10a–b.

Chiton dimophus [sic] Rochebrune, 1891 [sic] – Forcelli (2000: 181) in synonymy.

Locality: “Baie Orange. – Trés rare.”

Remarks: Listed by Pilsbry (1894: 111) in his section on “insufficiently described chitons.” Placed in synonymy of Callochiton puniceus (Gould, 1846) by Castellanos (1988: 11) and Forcelli (2000: 181)

Chaetopleura frigida Rochebrune, 1889: H.137, pl. 9, fig. 9a–b.

Locality: “Baie Orange. – Trés rare.”

Remarks: Listed by Pilsbry (1893b: 317) as a “young shell” in the synonymy of Plaxiphora setiger King [sic; = Chiton setiger King & Broderip, 1832]; now a synonym of Plaxiphora aurata (Spalowsky, 1795).

Chaetopleura hahni Rochebrune, 1889: H.136, pl. 9, fig. 4a–b.

Locality: “Baie Orange, Punta-Arenas. – Rare.”

Remarks: Pilsbry (1893b: 318–319) translated Rochebrune’s Latin description and placed his species in the synonymy of Chiton frembleii Broderip, 1832 which was treated as a “var.” of Plaxiphora setiger King [sic; = Chiton setiger King & Broderip, 1832]. These nomina are now all considered to be synonyms of Plaxiphora aurata (Spalowsky, 1795). It is probable that C. ahnni Rochebrune was a printer’s error for hahni. Although Pilsbry translated the description of one, he evidently failed to notice that Rochebrune’s descriptions of the two are virtually identical.

Tonicia horniana Rochebrune, 1889: H.139, pl. 9, fig. 7a–b.

Tonicella horniana (Rochebrune, 1889) – Castellanos (1988: 8 [sic; = 7]; Forcelli (2000: 182).

Locality: “Baie Orange. – Rare.”

Remarks: Forcelli (2000: 182) reproduced the original figure.

Schizochiton hyadesi Rochebrune, 1889: H.132, pl. 9, fig. 1a–b.

Nuttalochiton hyadesi (Rochebrune, 1899 [sic]) – Forcelli (2000: 181).

Nuttalochiton hyadesi (Rochebrune, 1889) – Castellanos (1988: 9); Sirenko (2006:86).

Locality: “ Terre de Feu, par 20m de profondeur. – Rare.”

Remarks: Forcelli (2000) reproduced Rochebrune’s figure.

Tonicia lebruni Rochebrune, 1884: 35.

Tonicia lebruni Rochebrune, 1889: H.138, pl. 9, figs. 6a–b.

Locality: “Pounta[sic]-Arenas (mission Lebrun, Patagonie). – Assez commun.” in 1884; “Punta-Arenas, Baie Orange, Détroit de Magellan. – Assez commun.” in 1889.

Remarks: The 1884 description not listed in 1889. Treated as a valid species by Castellanos (1988: 22),

Forcelli (2000: 185), and Sirenko (2006:84).

Acanthopleura magellanica Rochebrune, 1889: H.134; new name for “ Chiton magallanicus Chemnitz, Conch. Cab.,, t. VIII, p. 279, tab. 93 [sic; = 94], fig. 797 et 798.”

Remarks: “Named” by Rochebrune not because he no longer considered Chemnitz names to be available, but it was his habit, common at the time, to assume authorship of any species which he placed in a new genus. He did this although he listed other names, also proposed in Chiton, in the chresonymy. Pilsbry (1893b: 229) considered Rochebrune’s citation to be “worthless, on account of his ignorance of generic and specific characters in this group, and his false synonymy in the case of this species.” Rochebrune’s listing is included here as he did introduce the available name Acanthopleura magellanica Rochebrune, 1889 which is a junior objective synonym, as well as a secondary homonym, of Chiton magellanicus Gmelin, 1791.

Tonicia martiali Rochebrune, 1889: H.139, pl. 9, fig. 8a–b.

Tonicia martieli [sic] Rochebrune – Pilsbry (1893a: 203).

Nuttallochiton martiali (Rochebrune, 1899 [sic]) – Forcelli (2000: 181).

Nuttallochiton martiali (Rochebrune, 1889) – Castellanos (1988: 7 [sic; = 8]); Sirenko (2006: 86).
