294387FBFFDB6C60FF0BFE0BFC72C19A.taxon	description	Locality: “ Circa Punta Arenas Patagoniae. ” Remarks: Forcelli (2000: 63) listed in synonymy of P. taeniata (W. Wood, 1825 [sic; = 1828; = G. B. 294387FBFFDB6C60FF0BFE0BFC72C19A.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The 1885 description is cited in the chresonymy in 1889 with the specific name misspelled as almyris. This has been picked up as the correct original spelling by at least one author (Dell 1971: 194) who placed it in the synonymy of Margarella violacea (King & Broderip, 1831 [sic]). Placed in synonymy of Photinatoma taeniata (W. Wood, 1825 [sic]) by Castellanos & Landoni (1989: 14). Placed in synonymy of Margarites violacea (King & Broderip, 1832) by Forcelli (2000: 57). 294387FBFFDB6C60FF0BFE0BFC72C19A.taxon	discussion	Remarks: An error for P. virginalis in Ihering’s discussion of species listed by Ameghino. Wilckens (1906: 173), in a list of species reported from the Punta Arenas “ Magallanian beds ” by Ameghino included “ Ph. virginalis (non marginalis) Roch. u. 294387FBFFD56C6FFF0BFF5EFB4EC542.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Rochebrune & Mabille in 1889 did not reference their 1885 description. Some authors have suggested that this may be a synonym of Admete schythei (Philippi, 1856) which was never illustrated. Forcelli (2000) gave color illustrations of most species, but they are not captioned. The figures are placed immediately below the discussion of the species. At the top of his page 107 there is a figure immediately following the discussion of Admete frigida but is a different species, unknown me. The shell figured may be the same specimen figured by Castellanos & Landoni (1992: pl. 3, fig. 20) as A. cf. australis (Philippi, 1856 [sic; = 1855]) with “ C. schythei? Phil., 1856 ” in synonymy. Forcelli’s discussion of Admete schythei (Philippi, 1856 [sic; = 1855]) on page 106 is followed by a figure of what appears to be Admete frigida Rochebrune & Mabille. Hemmen (2007) copied and enlarged Rochebrune & Mabille’s figures of Admete frigida but captioned them as “ From Forcelli (2000) after Rochebrune & Mabille (1889). ” Hemmen’s second figure of “ Admete frigida ” is the copy from Forcelli.	en	Petit, Richard E. 294387FBFFD56C6FFF0BFCB6FBD8C364.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The description in 1889 was shown as “ Mabille & Rochebrune ” with reference to Mabille’s 1885 paper. There is nothing in that volume of the Bulletins to justify joint authorship. The author is shown as Mabille on the paper and in the Table des matières, and the species is attributed to him in the Table des noms d’espèces. It was listed by Fahey & Valdés (2005: 237) who noted that: “ This species was only perfunctorily described by Rochebrune and Mabille (Rochebrune and Mabille 1891 [sic]). ” They provided a literature reference to a tentative synonymy but ended their comments with: “ However, the type specimen of A. vatheleti cannot be located and thus no further revision is possible. ”	en	Petit, Richard E. 294387FBFFD26C68FF0BFE9BFB9AC317.taxon	discussion	Remarks: For a discussion of the type species, see Hochberg (1998: 203). He discarded an earlier type designation of E. membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille as he considered that species to be unidentifiable and a nomen dubium, and declared the other included species, Octopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852 to be the type “ by virtual monotypy. ” His action was effectively “ fixation by elimination ” which is inadmissible under Article 69.4 of the Code (I. C. Z. N. 1999) [Article 69 b of the Code in effect in 1998 (I. C. Z. N. 1985)]. As at least one author is stated to have considered the Rochebrune & Mabille species to be a synonym of Gould’s species, there should be no problem as the type species will simply be a junior synonym. However, Article 69 a of the 1985 Code applies and no type designation after the first is valid. The type species may be cited as E. membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille by subsequent designation of Hoyle, 1910 = Octopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852.] Resolution of this issue is left to cephalopod systematists.	en	Petit, Richard E. 294387FBFFD16C6BFF0BFB94FAADC152.taxon	discussion	Remarks: This is a strange error by Dall. He listed this as an included species on page 219 as well as in the systematic treatment on page 383. He placed Malletia hyadesi Mabille & Rochebrune in synonymy stating “ I have no doubt of their identity. ” Dall cited the original figure references for both M. hyadesi and M. patagonica and further stated that “ M. magellanica Smith, is much more acutely pointed behind. ” Malletia magellanica E. Both are indicated in the index as valid. He included Rochebrune’s replacement name in his discussion. Placed in synonymy of Hemiarthrum setulosum Dall, 1876 by Castellanos (1988: 8 [sic; = 7]). Locality: “ Baie Orange. – Trés rare. ” Remarks: Listed by Pilsbry (1893 b: 317) as a “ young shell ” in the synonymy of Plaxiphora setiger King [sic; = Chiton setiger King & Broderip, 1832]; now a synonym of Plaxiphora aurata (Spalowsky, 1795). Chaetopleura hahni Rochebrune, 1889: H. 136, pl. 9, fig. 4 a – b. Locality: “ Baie Orange, Punta-Arenas. – Rare. ” Remarks: Pilsbry (1893 b: 318 – 319) translated Rochebrune’s Latin description and placed his species in the synonymy of Chiton frembleii Broderip, 1832 which was treated as a “ var. ” of Plaxiphora setiger King [sic; = Chiton setiger King & Broderip, 1832]. These nomina are now all considered to be synonyms of Plaxiphora aurata (Spalowsky, 1795). It is probable that C. ahnni Rochebrune was a printer’s error for hahni. Although Pilsbry translated the description of one, he evidently failed to notice that Rochebrune’s descriptions of the two are virtually identical. Acanthopleura magellanica Rochebrune, 1889: H. 134; new name for “ Chiton magallanicus Chemnitz, Conch. Cab. ,, t. VIII, p. 279, tab. 93 [sic; = 94], fig. 797 et 798. ” Remarks: “ Named ” by Rochebrune not because he no longer considered Chemnitz names to be available, but it was his habit, common at the time, to assume authorship of any species which he placed in a new genus. He did this although he listed other names, also proposed in Chiton, in the chresonymy. Pilsbry (1893 b: 229) considered Rochebrune’s citation to be “ worthless, on account of his ignorance of generic and specific characters in this group, and his false synonymy in the case of this species. ” Rochebrune’s listing is included here as he did introduce the available name Acanthopleura magellanica Rochebrune, 1889 which is a junior objective synonym, as well as a secondary homonym, of Chiton magellanicus Gmelin, 1791.
