It is now widespread from west coast of the Grande Terre and Loyalty Islands (Chazeau, pers. obs.). Its arrival appears to be a probable self-introduction from Vanuatu, where this species is widespread (Chazeau 1981b). It is a diaspid predator, especially Aspidiotini on coconut trees (Chazeau 1981b; Omkar & Pervez 2003; Ponsonby 2009). This is a widespread and largely promoted species for biocontrol programs of Aspidiotus destructor Signoret ( Hemiptera: Diaspididae), especially in coconut palm plantations (Omkar & Pervez 2003). It is widely distributed from India to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar, La Réunion, Mauritius, Seychelles, Chagos Islands, Malaysia, Indonesia, Oman, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Brazil; but also in the Pacific: Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Samoa, French Polynesia and Hawaii (Booth 1998; Chazeau 1983).

Material examined. C. transversalis is a very widespread species, it has been recorded widely in the Asia-Pacific region, from India to Polynesia, including Australia, Tasmania, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji Islands, Micronesia, Cook Islands, Wallis & Futuna, and French Polynesia. In New Caledonia, it is a common species on both coasts, including high altitudes (greater than 1,000m), Isle of Pines, Belep Islands, Loyalty Islands, Surprise, Chesterfield and Walpole islands. This is a polyphagous predator of various Hemiptera ( Aphididae, Psyllidae, Coccomorpha). Humans have promoted its spread and we consider it as introduced according to its biological traits (since aphids are all introduced in New Caledonia; CM & HJ, unpublished data) and distribution. When prey is scarce, it is also known to feed on pollen and extrafloral nectaries (Evans 2000) which are uncommon in the New Caledonian native flora. This species has attracted great interest in biocontrol especially against aphids ( Aphis gossypii Glover) and against the pseudococcid Planococcus citri (Risso) (Waterhouse 1998) .

Material examined. According to Fauvel (1903), who examined the type series, Coelophora bicruciata (Montrouzier) was a mixture of Coelophora inaequalis and Micraspis frenata (Erichson) specimens. Verania artensis was subsequently synonymized by Chazeau (1978). Coelophora inaequalis is widespread from both coasts to high altitude (> 1,000m) on Grande Terre but also on Loyalty Islands and Isle of Pines. This species is widely distributed across Asia and the Pacific region (Australia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji Islands, Hawaii, Micronesia (Bonin, Marianna, Caroline, Wake, Marshall, Kiribati), Cook Islands, Samoa, Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia); but also has been recorded from eastern North America . This is a polyphagous predator of hemipterous insects ( Aphididae, Coccomorpha) from natural habitats to agricultural lands and disturbed areas. Recorded prey are cicadellid larvae, psyllids [ Heteropsylla cubana Crawford, Mesohomotoma hibisci (Froggatt)], aphids ( Cerataphis spp.), and lepidopterous eggs [ Spodoptera mauritia (Boisduval)]. Its biology has been studied in New Caledonia by Sallée & Chazeau (1985) in the context of biocontrol usage against two aphids [ Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus) and Hyperomyzus lactucae (Linnaeus)]. To date, this species has not yet been promoted for biocontrol programs.

Material examined. NEW CALEDONIA: Bac de la Ouaïème, 17.iv.1986 (J. Chazeau rec.) This taxon is highly polymorphic from a morphological point of view, which leads to some identification confusions with C. mulsanti . But C. quadrivittata is always smaller than C. mulsanti . Its biology has been well studied by Chazeau (1980, 1981a). Known preys are scale insects [ Aspidiotus sp., Aspidiotus destructor Signoret, Coccus viridis (Green)] and psyllids ( Heteropsylla cubana). According to Fauvel (1903), who examined the type series of Coelophora bicruciata, it was a mixture of Coelophora inaequalis and Micraspis frenata specimens. This species is common in Australasia (Australia, Tasmania and Papua New Guinea). Iablokoff- Khnzorian (1982) treated the species as a junior synonym of Micraspis lineata (Thunberg, 1781) . This Micraspis is very common over New Caledonia, mostly from open areas on the west coast, but also the Central Range, Isle of Pines, and Belep Islands (Art Island). Its trophic preferences are wide, being mostly a hemipteran predator (aphids, cicadellids, psyllids), but it is able to eat pollen or extrafloral nectaries when prey are scarce (Hawkeswood & Turner 2002; Lundgren 2009). It has been widely recorded in close association with the invasive psyllid, Heteropsylla cubana, in New Caledonia (Gatimel 2005). This species has not yet been widely promoted for biocontrol, despite high potential in agroecosystems (Chenaux et al. 2011).

Material examined. NEW CALEDONIA: Bondé, 6.vi.1975 (J. This ladybug is now widespread all over New Caledonia, including Isle of Pines and Walpole Island. There are two color morphs which have been introduced, the paler one is the most widespread in New Caledonia (Gatimel 2005). This species is also recorded from North America (its native range), Hawaii and French Polynesia. It is known to feed on various prey sources (Chazeau et al. 1991): psyllids (e.g., Heteropsylla cubana), aphids [e.g., Cerataphis lataniae (Boisduval)] and cicadellids (e.g., Iassinae larvae).

Material examined. Bielawski (1973) made a new description under Rhyzobius nigrovatus (type locality: Nouméa). Tomaszewska (2010) redescribed this species and gave an account of its geographic range. This Australian species appears to have recently spread to New Caledonia and Vanuatu, where it is now quite common. In Vanuatu, it has been heavily used and promoted against the coconut scale Aspidiotus destructor Signoret ( Hemiptera: Diaspididae) between 1960 and 1980 (Chazeau 1981b). This efficient diaspidid feeder was also deliberately introduced to the Caroline Islands (Nafus & Schreiner 1989) and Wallis Island in 1965. It has been seen established in Wallis in 1981 (Gutierrez 1981), and also in South Africa (before 1988). Apart from Aspidiotus destructor Signoret, it has been seen to feed on Aspidiotus nerii Bouché, Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti), Lepidosaphes beckii (Newman) (Cochereau 1965, 1969).

Literature records. Therefore, Bielawski (1973) established his review on specimens from Fauvel’s collection, in Brussels. This author made a redescription where he illustrated male genitalia, but he did not assign a lectotype. Tomaszewska (2010) established a lectotype and a paralectotype from the Fauvel collection (respectively a male from Canala County and a male from Boulari in Mont-Dore County). This species is recorded from the east and west coasts (Nouméa, Mont-Dore, Canala). Uncommon in the wild, we consider this species as a scale-feeding specialist.

Literature records. Epilachnini are phytophagous ladybugs. Taxonomy of this tribe is complex and controversial. There is still debate between authors on the validity of Henosepilachna Li, 1961, and its possible synonymy with Epilachna Chevrolat in Dejean, 1836. But recent molecular phylogenetic analysis of Epilachnini from both genera confirmed that they belong to distinct groups (Kobayashi et al. 2009; Szawaryn et al. 2015). Our present note does not intend to resolve this nomenclatural question. So we follow the nomenclatural decisions of Bielawski (1972) regarding New Caledonian Epilachnini .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/341EB2629C42FFCBFF3DF88E2DDFFED4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. But, it is highly probable that the “ vigintioctopunctata ” recorded in the region (i.e. Epilachna with 28 dots), which attacks Cucurbitaceae, belongs to this species. It was originally described from Indonesia, but this taxon was redescribed from Australia ( Epilachna cucurbitae Richards, 1983, synonymized with Epilachna sumbana Bielawski, 1959: Jadwiszczak & Wegrzynowicz, 2003, as quoted by Slipinski 2007). It is also recorded widely in Asia and the Pacific region (Australia, Indonesia, West Timor, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji Islands, Samoa and Wallis & Futuna). This species was not recorded by Bielawski (1972) and therefore must have been introduced accidentally to New Caledonia after Bielawski’s study. This ladybug was frequent around Nouméa and Dumbéa counties by the end of the 1970s (Chazeau, pers. obs.), but today it is rarer. In New Caledonia, its host plants are cultivated or wild Cucurbitaceae, suggesting that this species belongs to the vigintioctopunctata species complex, whereas the two Australian species are specific to Solanaceae (Richards & Filewood 1990) .

Material examined. It is considered to be a recent introduction in New Caledonia and Cook Islands. It has been introduced successfully into Vanuatu, Fiji Islands, Micronesia (Guam), Hawaii, in the southern United States (California, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina and Texas), southern Europe, North Africa, South Africa, India and Indonesia (Java). It was also accidentally introduced to New Zealand, where it is not widespread. The date of arrival in New Caledonia is unknown, but it probably dispersed from Vanuatu (introduced to there in 1964 by Cochereau from Fiji Islands). It has been regularly collected since its first reported occurrence in 1975 in Nouméa but remains uncommon. This species is a major biocontrol agent worldwide as it represents the world’s first biocontrol success after its introduction in California in citrus orchards to control Icerya purchasi Maskell outbreaks (Debach 1974). This is an aggressive predator against scale insects, especially Icerya spp. ( Hemiptera, Monophlebidae). In Nouméa, it has been seen feeding on I. seychellarum (Westwood) .

Material examined. Iablokoff-Khnzorian (1982) examined the type specimen of C. polynesiae Crotch, 1874 (coll. Crotch, Cambridge University; type locality: Fiji) and considered it as a junor synonym of M. duodecimpunctatus . This specimen is obviously a female belonging to Menochilus, but the locality label did not match with Fauvel’s specimen, and therefore with the type specimen of M. duodecimpunctatus . As pointed out by Iablokoff-Khnzorian (1982), Fauvel’s type specimen has been lost. On Lifou Island, from where M. duodecimpunctatus was described, there is another common Menochilus, M. sexmaculatus . This taxon matches with Fauvel’s original description, but exhibits various color morphs. Based on this information and state of knowledge, we conclude that Menochilus duodecimpunctatus appears very doubtful and should be removed from the New Caledonian coccinellid checklist.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/341EB2629C5BFFD3FF3DFCA42A2BFA0E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This Australian species, distinctive by its large size and coloration, has apparently never been collected from New Caledonia. Specimens from the Montrouzier collection had Sydney as locality (Laczynski & Tomaszewska 2009). We consider this record as an erroneous one and the species should be deleted from the New Caledonian checklist.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/341EB2629C58FFD0FF3DFF492C17FE73	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
