572687FDFFEF777EFF1EFE35FCC09826.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Shell with multispiral protoconch. Teleoconch sculpture consists of orthocline and flexuous axial ribs and flexuous growth lines. On the body whorl 9 axial (rarely 8) ribs. The species is a quite similar to Mangelia tenuicosta. In some references (e. g., Gruppo Malacologico Livornese and Gruppo Malacologica Romagnolo 2005) the presence of incised striae in M. attenuata has been noted as a diagnostic difference between the two species. However, this feature does not seem to reliably distinguish these species because it was only evident (under x 40 magnification) on all teleoconch whorls in just one specimen, whereas the majority of the specimens exhibited axial ribs that were smooth or with evident striae on the earlier 1 – 3 whorls only. Shell height up to 10 mm.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFEF7779FF1EF9D7FCD79EF7.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The species was previously reported from Iskenderun Bay by Van Aartsen & Fehr-de Wal (1978), but it was not encountered in the present study. The illustrated specimen was recorded on the northern coast of Cyprus coast at a depth of 6 m in July 1998. Mangelia barashi is characteristic with its paucispiral protoconch, thick axial ribs (8 on the body whorl), deep posterior sinus and thickened outer lip. Among the Mangelia species with a paucispiral protoconch, the species can be mistaken for Mangelia callosa, from which the distinguishing features have been discussed by Cachia (1995).	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFE97778FF1EFF15FB989CEB.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The species has an ovate biconic or a relatively longer shell with multispiral protoconch. The sculpture on the teleoconch whorls consists of axial ribs only (on the body whorl 8 – 9 ribs), being a bit narrower and shouldered to the suture. No spiral sculpture (completely smooth). Aperture narrow, with posterior sinus and well developed varix on the outer lip. White spiral bands on the light brown background are characteristic. On the body whorl their number varies between 6 – 8, and the one below the suture is wider. Differences between it and similar Mangelia species were described by Van Aartsen & Fehr-de Wal (1978). Height of the shell up to 6.5 mm.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFE97778FF1EFC9BFD739B05.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The original description of the species as Cythara derelicta callosa was by Nordsieck (1977) based on a specimen from Attika (Saronicos Bay, Aegean Sea). Cachia (1995) later renamed it Mangelia callosa. Shell with brown paucispiral protoconch. On the teleoconch whorls thick axial ribs (8 on the body whorl) as wide as their interspaces and many fine spirals with spaced stronger ones constitute the sculpture. Posterior sinus deep, siphonal canal wide and labrum thickened. The whorls are angulated and more evident on the body whorl. Based on its shell characteristics, M. callosa appears most similar to M. barashi. Differences between this species and other congeneric ones were noted in detail by Cachia (1995).	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFE9777BFF1EFAFAFCC09D37.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The species has a multispiral protoconch and orthocline axial ribs on the teleoconch (on the body whorl 7 – 8 ribs). The spiral sculpture on the teleoconch whorls consists of incised striae only. In adult specimens the labrum is thickened. M. costata can easily be distinguished from other Mangelia species with similar shell shape by its incised (grooved) spirals between axial ribs on teleoconch whorls. In some studies carried out in the past, the junior name Mangelia coarctata (Forbes 1840) has occasionally been used instead of Mangelia costata (Pennant, 1777) (see the relevant note in WoRMS (WoRMS Editorial Board 2020).	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFE67776FF1EF9F1FE029F47.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The investigated specimen was a subadult, with orthocline axial ribs on the teleoconch whorls (on the body whorl 9 ribs) somewhat narrower to the suture, and a spiral sculpture consisting of weak and strong striae. Based on the shell shape and number of spirals on the teleoconch whorls, the species appears similar mainly to some specimens of Mangelia unifasciata with light color, from which it differs by its paucispiral protoconch and light rust colored spiral band on the middle part of the body whorl. Mangelia secreta is also similar to some specimens of Mangelia striolata [previously named as Mangelia caerulans (Philippi)] in terms of the color band on the body whorl, but M. striolata differs from this species in terms of its protoconch and teleoconch shapes, and its very fine spiral sculpture.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFE77776FF1EFE34FCC09A33.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The shell has a multispiral protoconch and on teleoconch whorls has a sculpture of orthocline axial ribs (8 – 10 ribs on the body whorl) and spiral cords. The thinner spiral cords are many in number and 5 – 6 thin striae are located between two stronger cords. Posterior sinus and labial varix are well developed. The species can be distinguished from the similar M. unifasciata by its protoconch with has a greater number of whorls and its stronger spiral cords. Although Scarponi & Della Bella (2010: 83) comment that the protoconch of M. stosiciana is similar to that of Glabrocythara locklini Fargo and that more anatomical studies should be performed to evaluate the generic affinities of these species, M. stosiciana is considered within the genus Mangelia (WoRMS Editorial Board 2020).	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. The species can be easily distinguished from congeneric ones by its shell and protoconch shapes and color patterns. According to Scarponi & Della Bella (2010: 89), the species should be considered within the genus Lyromangelia based on its shell and radular characters. 572687FDFFE07771FF1EF998FE7699F6.taxon	discussion	Remarks: The shell shape of the species is very similar to Mangelia attenuata, from which it differs by its narrower and flexuous axial ribs, thinner conical teleoconch shape and longer siphonal canal. Some references have noted the lack of incised striae in M. tenuicosta as a distinguishing feature. However, many of the individuals of M. attenuata investigated in the present study did not have incised striae on the teleoconch whorls or the striae were present on earlier whorls only. Therefore, the feature does not seem to be reliable for differentiating these species.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. There is a spiral sculpture consisting of relatively thick cords occurring over the ribs. Posterior sinus deep, labial varix well developed. Mangelia thapsiae [= Mangelia fieldeni (Van Aartsen & Fehr-de Wal 1978)] can be misidentified as M. paciniana and M. sandrii. The species is different from M. paciniana by its paucispiral protoconch, and from M. sandrii by its spiral sculpture being thicker.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFFC776DFF1EFE58FCCB9A0D.taxon	discussion	Remarks: M. vauquelini has a shell with a multispiral protoconch and sculpture of thick orthocline axial ribs (on the body whorl 9 – 10 ribs) and slim spirals, evident mostly between the axial ribs. Adult specimens have a thick labial varix and a posterior sinus of medium depth. The species is characteristic with its shell shape and wide brown stripe on the body whorl below the suture. According to Scarponi & Della Bella (2010: 59), although the species (as well as M. taeniata which is discussed above) is traditionally attributed to genus Mangelia, it should at least to be considered doubtful due to the similarities of some protoconch and teleoconch characters with those of the genus Lyromangelia. But later the genus Lyromangelia was synonymized with the genus Mangelia (Bouchet et al. 2011).	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFFC776FFF1EF95AFC139D37.taxon	description	Description. Shell biconic, of small size, height 3.1 – 4.4 mm, width 1.3 – 1.6 mm. Protoconch paucispiral of about 1.3 rounded, transparent and glossy whorls. On the last whorl with some oblique axial riblets before the boundary with the teleoconch. Teleoconch of 3.6 – 4 whorls, shouldered adapically, and with evident subsutural ramp below the suture. On the whorls, a sculpture of orthocline axial ribs and spiral cords of unequal thickness. Axial ribs (on the body whorl 8 – 9 ribs) a bit thinner and curving regularly towards the suture and continue nearly to the base. The interspaces between the axial ribs twice as wide as ribs. Spiral sculpture consists of dense and thin spirals alternating with intermittently thicker ones (Figure 19, M). On subsutural ramp only thin spirals of equal thickness. Aperture long, narrow and about 2 / 3 height of the body whorl. Columella smooth, outer lip with labial varix. Posterior sinus evident. Siphonal canal short and wide. On the siphonal fasciole relatively thicker cords. Color range of the shell from whitish to light brown, sometimes with fine lines in lighter color. Protoconch glossy white or light brown. Sometimes there is a brown spot on the inner part of outer lip.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov. 572687FDFFFC776FFF1EF95AFC139D37.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Based on its conchological characteristics (shell shape and size, profile, spiral cords of unequal size, number of axial ribs on the body whorl), Mangelia vanaartseni appears to be a sister (sibling) species of Mangelia unifasciata (Figure 19, H – K), from which it differs by its paucispiral protoconch. It may also be confused with Mangelia secreta which has a similar spiral sculpture, but the latter species is different by its light color with rust colored spiral band on the body whorl, and the protoconch with more whorls.	en	Öztürk, Bilal (2021): Mangelia (Gastropoda, Conoidea) species of the Turkish coasts with description of Mangelia vanaartseni sp. nov.
