Named in honor of the collector of the holotype.

Host. Swept from Gambel oak, Quercus gambelii Nuttall (Fagaceae).

Discussion. This is the only southwestern species of Brachys with blue elytra and a subapical coppery patch of setae. I have seen specimens from Georgia, Maryland, and Virginia that I consider to belong to the widespread species under the name of Brachys aerosus (Melsheimer) that superficially approach B. rileyi by having dark metallic blue elytra with irregular preapical patches of dark orange setae. The eastern specimens differ most obviously, however, in having the pronotum with strong reddish coppery reflections and moderately dense coppery setae, the elytra with a weak transverse fascia of setae across the middle, and the apical patches of orange setae with an irregular anterior margin and extending to the elytral apices, among other differences. There are a number of smaller Central American species of Brachys, described and undescribed, that are entirely bright metallic blue or have bright metallic blue elytra, e.g., Brachys bella Fisher. The Central American species are associated with monocots and are probably not closely related within the genus to the species described here. The three species described in this paper are apparently all associated with oaks (Quercus spp.). The female paratypes are smaller, the one from Texas being 3.95 mm long, 1.90 mm wide, whereas the specimen from New Mexico is 4.55 mm long, 2.30 mm wide. The male paratypes are 4.30 mm long and 2.05 mm wide and 4.15 mm long and 2.00 mm wide. The male genitalia are not distinctive but similar to those of most eastern US oak-feeding Brachys (B. aerosus, B. ovatus (Weber), B. tessellatus (F.), etc.).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5E11526A7778C32454C24C43579ADA08	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Head: Width 1.00 mm, weakly depressed along midline, more broadly so between eyes; epistomal width 1/5 of distance between inner margins of eyes. Pronotum: Strongly convex at anterior margin in cross-section, nearly flat in lateral view, transversely depressed along base lateral to midline, widest at base, sides very weakly rounded to apical angles; prehumeral carinae broadly, weakly rounded ridge for about 1/2 length of pronotum at middle; surface shagreened on midline at base and on disc, otherwise ocellate punctate along margins. Scutellum triangular, weakly rounded on anterior margin, about 2X wider than long. Elytra: Slightly narrower than pronotum at base, equally wide at base and middle, weakly emarginate between; humeri moderately prominent, each elytron with strong, linear depression along base interior to humerus, and weakly carinate along lateral margin only on anterior 4/5 of blue area; surface obsoletely punctate on disk in blue area, becoming transversely rugulose at lateral margins, surface densely micropunctate and granular in the apical coppery area. Venter: Faintly, inconspicuously shagreened and ocellate punctate, punctures open behind. Apex of terminal abdominal ventrite broadly rounded with 12 deflexed, blunt teeth, longest at middle becoming shorter at lateral edges.

H o l o t y p e. Named in honor of the noted coleopterist and collector of the unique holotype, the late William F. Barr (Westcott and Merickel 2012).

Discussion. This is arguably one of the most beautiful species of Brachys in Mexico. The short lateral carina on the elytra of this and the following species is unusual among previously described species in the genus, with only Brachys intervallorum Hespenheide, Brachys simplex Waterhouse, and the following species having partial carinae, and Brachys fulgidus Fisher and Brachys exquisitus Hespenheide lacking carinae altogether.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5E11526A777AC32454C54B23523DDAD4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Holotype female: Narrowly obovate, rounded truncate and medially emarginate in front and behind; head, pronotum, scutellum, and venter black, moderately shiny, with reddish coppery reflections on head and pronotum, anterior 2/3 and apices of elytra blue, reddish purple along suture, oval coppery area on posterior 1/3 extending to lateral margin and angled anteriorad; head nearly glabrous with inconspicuous sparse, silvery setae along midline and on vertex; pronotum nearly glabrous along midline at base, on disc and anterior margin, sparsely covered with silvery setae in basal depression and along lateral margins; elytra with inconspicuous setae along anterior margin and on raised ridges, coppery area with dense coppery setae; ventral surface with uniform sparse short, inconspicuous setae, longer sparse, silvery setae along posterior margin of terminal ventrite; 4.35 mm long, 2.15 mm wide. Head: Width 1.30 mm, produced and rounded interior to eyes, strongly depressed along midline, more broadly so between eyes on ventral 1/2; epistomal width 1/4 of distance between inner margins of eyes. Elytra: Subequal to pronotum at base, wider at middle than at base and weakly emarginate between; elytral apices narrowly separately rounded, humeri prominent; each elytron with weak depressions along base interior to humerus and in coppery area, and carinate along lateral margin 3/5 of length only to anterior edge of coppery area; surface with weak ridges equidistant from and interior to lateral carina and suture on basal 1/2, finely punctate and shagreened on disk in blue area, surface densely micropunctate and granular in coppery area. Venter: Faintly, inconspicuously shagreened and ocellate punctate, punctures open behind on abdominal ventrites. Apex of terminal abdominal ventrite broadly rounded truncate with 16 short deflexed subequal blunt teeth.

Holotype. Mexico: Sonora, Hwy 16, km 339, 03.08.2007, D. Furth (CSCA).

Etymology. The name refers to its similarity to B. rileyi.

Discussion. This species is superficially very similar to B. rileyi and is therefore not figured separately; in fact, before I examined the Texas specimens and only saw the photograph (Fig. 1), I thought it was conspecific. Brachys consimilis differs from B. rileyi most obviously in having incomplete lateral carinae on the elytra; additionally, in B. consimilis the elytra are darker in coloration with two weak ridges on the disc and have separately rounded apices, the pronotum is reddish coppery and has the basal, transverse depression interrupted at the middle, and the head has dorsal, rounded protuberances.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/5E11526A777AC32556C048545701D9E6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
