Type species: Lemula decipiens Bates, 1884 (by monotypy).—Aurivillius, 1912: 168.—Tamanuki, 1939: 93.— Hayashi, 1944: 22.—N. Ohbayashi, 2007: 361.

Diagnosis. Body small, length between ca 5–9 mm. Head widest across eyes; tempora gradually narrowed from some distance behind eyes to neck; gena very short, less than half of eye diameter; eyes entire, not reniform. Antennae inserted near anterior margin of eyes, not reaching elytral apices in both sexes; scape rather thick, usually longer than antennomere III, and nearly as long as V.

Pronotum with a pair of blunt lateral tubercles; disk moderately convex with distinct or indistinct median longitudinal impression. Prosternal intercoxal process narrow and short, rarely reaching middle of coxae; acetabula of procoxae broadly open posteriorly. Mesosternal process narrow, parallel-sided in apical half. Stridulatory files of mesonotum symmetrically divided. Scutellum usually lingulate.

Elytra sub-evenly convex in lateral view, ca 1.8 to 2.2 times as long as humeral width, parallel-sided in male, slightly dilated apically in female with obtusely rounded outer angles. Elytral pubescence consists of uniform slant- ed hairs, or intermixed different type of erect and slanted hairs. Legs moderate in length; femora slightly clavate; tibiae linear, slightly broadened apically; metatarsi not remarkably elongate; first tarsomere as, or slightly longer than second and third combined.

Inflated endophallus basically similar in structure among species, but some specific characters can be recognized in proportions, structure of dorsal sclerites (ds) and dorsal macula (dm) situated at central trunk (CT). Proportions of endophallus are separable into three major types (Fig. I) as follows: type A = preapical bulb (PB) is tube-like structure without inflation; type B = central trunk (CT) and preapical bulb (PB) are clearly separable by preapical constriction (pc); type C = central trunk (CT) and preapical bulb (PB) are unified and strongly curved dorsally in lateral view .

Remarks. The genus Lemula can be separable from other genera of the tribe Rhagiini by small body size, entire eyes, laterally tuberculate pronotum or setigerous punctures on the elytra.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8C35DC6FEB6FFFBDFF764017FC56FA65	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This is the type species of the genus Lemula . In addition to Japan, it has also been recorded from Russia in spite of no record from northern Japan (Hokkaido). Mikhail Danilevsky (pers. comm.) provided the following comment: “I’ve never seen Lemula from Russian fauna, neither Tsherepanov. He (1979) described imago on the base of a single Japan specimen from Plavilstshikov’s collection. Plavilstshikov (1936) definitely recorded Lemula for Ussuri-land, but without more precise indication of locality and without material. Tsherepanov (1979) just repeated Plavilstshikov’s record, but added Sakhalin without any comments. Same was done by Krivolutskaya & Lobanov (Tsherepanov 1996). I (Danilevsky 2014) wrote, that occurrence of Lemula decipiens in Russia is very doubtful.” Based on this information, we exclude this species from the fauna of Russia.

Kano (1927) recorded this species from Musha, Taiwan, and Gressitt (1951) cited this record. But as indicated by Nakamura (1974), it is a doubtful record and the species should be removed from Taiwanese fauna.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8C35DC6FEB6FFFBAFF764533FA8AF84F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species is widely distributed in seacoast provinces of East and South China Sea on both sides of the Formosa Strait, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi. According to the comparison of the holotype of L. inaequalicollis Pic, 1957 (Fig. XVI-6 & 7) with the holotype of L. testaceipennis Gressitt, 1939 (Fig. XVI-5), it is concluded that the former is a synonym of the latter.

The Taiwanese population named L. densepunctata Hayashi, 1974 could not be distinguished from the Chinese population not only by external structure, but also by endophallic characters. L. densepunctata is therefore also synonymized with L. testaceipennis .

Lemula obscuripennis Shimomura, 1979 was described from Nantou County, Taiwan. It shows different color pattern of reddish brown pronotum and blackish elytra (Fig. IV-7; XVI-9). But we could not distinguish it from normally colored population by external and endophallic structures. In addition, both color type specimens were collected at the same place of restricted area of Nantou (cf. Chou 2004; Chou 2008:79) and Hsinchu Counties, and we conclude that it is a local variety of L. testaceipennis in Taiwan, and treat it as infraspecific (f. obscuripennis) in the present paper.

Holzschuh (2009) found two different species in the type series of L. inaequalicollis Pic, 1957 in ZFMK, and he described one of them which is not conspecific with the holotype as a new species, L. confusa Holzschuh, 2009 . He also noted that a specimen from the same locality as L. inaequalicollis Pic, 1957 in BMNH was determined as L. testaceipennis Gressitt, 1939 by Gressitt, and it was conspecific with the holotype of L. inaequalicollis Pic, 1957 . In that paper, Holzschuh did not synonymize the latter with L. testaceipennis, but according to our examination of a number of specimens from Zhejiang and Fujian, they are doubtlessly conspecific.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8C35DC6FEB67FFB0FF7641D3FBA5FC83	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The type of this species is thought to be left in the collection of Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute when the Japanese researchers returned Japan after world war II. Then we asked to Dr. Chi-Feng Li of this institute to search the type specimen. However, he could not locate the type specimen in the collection of this institute in Taichung, nor we could find it in any Japanese institution. It is very important to fix the taxon for the stability of the species classification of Lemula because of the similarity with L. testaceipennis Gressitt, 1935, L. zhani sp. nov. or L. jinfoshana sp. nov. (ICZN, 1999, Art. 75.1). For this reason, we herein designate a male specimen which was collected in the type area of this species as the neotype.

Neotype (NMNS). ♂. Lalashan was distinguished from L. coerulea or L. cyanipennis by black head and prothorax, longer and dull dark green elytra, etc. The specific name, “ longipennis “ means long elytra. However the specimens collected at Mt. Lalashan are identical with L. longipennis in proportion and structure of endophallus except for rather rare dark green color of elytra. As a result, the difference of elytral color is thought to be local variation, and here we synonymized L. longipennis with L. cyanipennis . This species is somewhat rare at Mt. Lalashan where L. formosana formosana is dominant.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8C35DC6FEB78FFABFF7642C7FC73FBC6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. However Tamanuki (1939) noted in his book of Fauna Nipponica that “the type specimen is only one female collected at Kamikôchi in the end of June, 1931 by Toshitake Iida”. Indeed the holotype specimen is presently preserved in the collection of MNHH and its label is “Kamikochi, Shinamo (= Nagano), 27-VII-1931, T. Iida leg.” Thus, the exact data of the holotype female specimen (MNHH) would be “Kamikôchi, Nagano pref., 27-VI-1931, T.
