Frons mostly yellowish with a brown spot on each side extending from M–line to scars; lappets brown (Fig. 1). Parietalia light brown at sides, lighter medially. Antennae and palpi light brown. Pronotum dark brown with a light median stripe. Legs brown, bases of femora lighter. Wing membrane and veins light brown but C and Sc paler. Cerci light brown basally, then bicolored.

Male. Forewing length, 9.6–9.9 mm. In dorsal view, keel well visible, with parallel sides before diverging distally (Fig. 2). In side view, the dorsal surface of the penial armature presents a marked depression in front of the keel, ventral vesicles present, small (Fig 3). Hooks normal, with pointed tips. Hammer a short truncate cone (Fig. 4).

Female. Forewing length, 12.6–13.0 mm. Subgenital plate with four subequal lobes. Median notch deeper than lateral ones. Distal margin of sternum nine straight, field of hairs V–shaped (Fig. 5).

Type Material. Holotype, male: BRAZIL, Rio Grande do Sul, Caraá, Rio dos Sinos (29º42’53”S 50º17’ 19”W), 0 4. XII. 2002. Paratypes: 1 male, 2 females, same data as holotype; 1 male, same data but 29º43'32”S 50º16’57”W.

Distribution. Northeastern Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Etymology. The name honors Gelson Luiz Fiorentin for his contribution to the knowledge of aquatic insects in Rio Grande do Sul State.

Remarks. The head pattern of A. fiorentini is distinctive, being most similar to that of A. oculatila Jewett (1959), known from Nova Teutonia, Santa Catarina, Brazil and from Misiones, Argentina (Froehlich 2002). However, in A. oculatila, the lighter central frons is enclosed by dark pigment and, in the male, the penis is very different, without a dorsal depression, with a V-shaped keel and a downsloping apex. The penial armature of A. fiorentini has some resemblance to that of A. minuta Klapálek (1922), a species from northern Brazil, especially in the deep depression in front of the keel, but in A. minuta it is deeper, and the apex is broader. In the female, A. minuta has paired patches of hairs in sternum nine.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/977887E4FFF4FF8BFF31F9A3FC0BFD55	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Legs brown, mid and hind femora bicolored. Wing membrane and veins light brown, C and Sc paler. Basal cercomere light, rest brownish.

Male. Forewing length, 11.8 mm. Hammer a short truncate cone (Fig. 7). Hooks regularly curved with pointed tips (Fig. 8). Ventral vesicles large. In lateral view, the penial apex bends dorsally (Fig. 10). Dorsal keel absent. Ventral membrane near base of hooks with a scaly appearance (Fig. 9).

Female. Unknown.

Type Material. Holotype, male: BRAZIL, Rio Grande do Sul, Caraá, Rio dos Sinos (29º42'53’’S 50º17'19”W), 0 4. XII. 2003.

Distribution. Known from the type locality.

Etymology. The name refers to the municipality in which it was collected. Noun in apposition.

Remarks. This species was collected together with A. fuscicosta (Enderlein 1909), to which it bears some resemblance. The latter, however, is darker and, medially on the frons, the brown pigment occupies the area from the postfrontal line to the M-line. They are readily separable by their penial armatures; that of A fuscicosta having a ventrally sloping apex, small ventral vesicles and apices of hooks blunt. In fact, the penis of A. caraa, with its lack of a keel, the large ventral vesicles and the upturned apex form a unique combination in the genus. The scaly area in the ventral membrane near the base of the hooks of A. caraa is also uncommon.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/977887E4FFF6FF8BFF31FD7BFA32FA3B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
