We found it occurring in two slow flowing shaded streams, both rich with Lemna sp. and Typha sp. The altitude does not exceed 150 m a.s.l. (Fig. 5). It overwinters as an adult (Wróblewski 1980). At both sites, it was found co-existing with M. reticulata .

General distribution. Holarctic species distributed from United Kingdom to northern China, Canada and the north of the United States. In Europe it reaches as far south as France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Ukraine being absent in southern Europe (Putshkov & Putshkov 1996; Rabitsch & Zettel 2000; Aukema et al. 2013; Kment et al. 2013). Though we found Velia caprai caprai in all the Carpathians, it was more frequent in northern Romania (Maramureș), where it is the only species that we identified (Fig. 4). In the south-west we collected it from one site only, in a hilly area at the margin of the mountains, not far from one place where V. mancinii mancinii and V. saulii were found co-existing. In the Apuseni Mountains (western Romania) as well as in the eastern Carpathians, the sites where V. caprai caprai occurs alternate with those where V. saulii is present. Velia caprai does not occur in Dobrogea. It lives in streams and creeks at altitudes ranging between 200 and 800 m a.s.l. (Fig. 5). In terms of biology and ecology, V. caprai caprai is one of the most studied Velia species; for various aspects of its biology see Murray & Giller (1991), Ditrich & Papáček (2009a, b, 2010), Ditrich & Koštál (2011) and Ditrich et al. Rather recently recorded from Serbia and Ukraine (Transcarpathian Region) (Protić & Živić 2007; Grandova & Prokin 2012). The records from Algeria, Turkey and central Asia should belong to other species (Fent et al. 2011).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/991487E99614FFAAFF18EB93A6A12ECB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Benedek (1969, 1970) has mentioned V. mancinii from ‘Báziás’ [= Baziaș] as being in Yugoslavia; however, it is in Romania. This record is based on Horváth’s (1897) material misidentified as V. rivulorum . The occurrence of V. mancinii mancinii in Romania is now confirmed. We found it only in south-western Romania, in the limestone landscape of the Danubian Gorge, in small streams and occasionally small ponds or springs at altitudes ranging between 80 and 300 m a.s.l., but also in the Mehedinți and Cernei Mountains at altitudes exceeding 600 m a.s.l. (Fig. 5). In those mountains, V. serbica occurs at lower altitudes. Velia mancinii mancinii often coexists with Aquarius najas (De Geer, 1773) (Gerridae); we also found it co-occurring with V. saulii .

General distribution. (2000) recorded V. saulii from Aiud (Alba county) and erroneously considered it as the first record in Romania. However, the species had already been mentioned a few years earlier by Kecskés (1997). Among the Veliinae, V. saulii has the widest distributional range in Romania, as well as in Europe. We found it in mountainous and hilly areas, excepting Maramureș (northern Romania) and Dobrogea (south-eastern Romania) where it is missing. Its altitudinal range varied between 100 and 1100 m a.s.l. (Fig. 5).

General distribution. West Euro-Siberian species. Widely distributed in most Europe except its Mediterranean regions (Tamanini 1951; Andersen 1995; Coulianos et al. 2008).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/991487E99610FFA7FF18E824A7232D5B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Initially, Tamanini (1951) described V. serbica as a subspecies of V. saulii based on a single female specimen. Later he included it in the V. affinis group and redescribed it as V. mancinii serbica based on male specimens originating from Pirin, Bulgaria (Tamanini 1959). Finally, Tamanini (1971) argued for its species status after he found both V. mancinii and V. serbica co-occurring in Jabolnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The macropterous specimens of this species has never been recorded.

Remarks. Velia serbica occurs in small streams, in shaded places, in south-western Romania. As presented in Fig. 4, its distribution is confined between the Mureș River in the north and Strei and Jiu Rivers in the east. We did not find it coexisting with other Vel ia species, but in the Cerna Valley we observed that in some cases on the same stream at lower altitudes V. serbica is present, whilst upstream it is replaced by V. mancinii mancinii . Most probably they may cohabit, as also mentioned by Tamanini (1971). The altitudes vary between 170 and 1370 m a.s.l. (Fig. 5).

General distribution.
