Also Schuster (1916) did not know this species from Turkey. L. ganglbaueri Reitter, 1891 from northern Turkey is similar in external morphology, but the femora are without distinct teeth, and the apicale of the aedeagus is longer (compare Figs. 36, 38). Pronotum (Fig. 6) with large punctures, distance as 1–4 diameters, most punctures with longer erect setae; surface convex and shining; lateral margin distinctly bordered; prothoracic hypomera with similar punctation and somewhat shorter setation than on disc. Elytra (Fig. 6) with rows of punctures without distinct striae, punctures of rows similar as punctures on pronotum, most punctures with a long erect seta; intervals with a regular row of smaller punctures bearing each an erect seta of similar length; interval 9 with 3 indistinct setiferous pores; all intervals feebly convex and shining. Anterior femora in both sexes with a single distinct tooth, middle and posterior femora each with a pair of small unequal teeth, external teeth of each pair distinct, internal teeth small. Male posterior tibia without particular characters. Aedeagus with broad triangular apicale with rounded tip, lateral margins of apicale not excavated (Fig. 41).

Diagnosis: Laena assingi sp. nov. is very similar to Laena weisei Reitter, 1878, described from Greece, in body length, external body characters and dorsal setation. However, in that species the anterior femora are only with a few tubercles, and the middle and posterior femora bear each a pair of equal tiny teeth. Additionally, the apicale of the aedeagus is broad triangular with rounded tip in L. assingi sp. nov. (Fig. 41), whereas the apicale in L. weisei is distinctly narrower with an acute tip (Fig. 39). Both species have a widely disjunct distribution.

Etymology: Named in honour of Volker Assing (Hannover), specialist of Staphylinidae, who sifted in Turkey not only the holotype of this species but also several other specimens of Laena .

Published locality: Goek Dagh (Schuster 1916 under Laena weisei).

Distribution: Southern Turkey.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/B26D87C8DB7C2C14AF99FD52BA4AF9AB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Eyes slightly prominent. Pronotum (Fig. 16) with large punctures, distance as 1–3 diameters, most punctures with longer erect setae; surface flat and shining; lateral margin distinctly bordered; prothoracic hypomera with sparser punctation and shorter setation than on disc. Elytra (Fig. 16) with rows of punctures without distinct striae, punctures of rows similar as punctures on pronotum, most punctures with a long erect seta; intervals with a regular row of smaller punctures bearing each an erect seta of similar length; interval 9 with 3 indistinct setiferous pores; all intervals flat and shining. All femora in both sexes without teeth or other armatures. Male posterior tibia internally before middle with a distinct tooth (Fig. 23). Aedeagus with triangular apicale with acute tip, lateral margins of apicale slightly excavated (Fig. 30).

Diagnosis: L. bozdagica sp. nov. is very similar in the external characters (shape and bordered margin of pronotum, dorsal puncation and setation, unarmed femora) as the widespread L. byzantina (also known from Boz Dağlari), but can be separated by the male posterior tibia internally before middle with a distinct tooth (unarmed in L. byzantina), and by the shape of the aedeagus with acute tip of the apicale (rounded tip in L. byzantina). Intermediate forms are unknown so that infraspecific variation seems unlikely. A modified male posterior tibia occurs in different extent only in a few other western Palaearctic species of Laena, in L. apfelbecki (Fig. 22), L. kraatzi (Fig. 24), and in L. lindbergi (Fig. 25). Additionally, the eyes are slightly prominent in L. bozdagica sp. nov. and L. byzantina, and more flat in L. lindbergi .

Etymology: Named after the Boz Dagh Mountain near Izmir, where the type series was collected.

Distribution: Western Turkey, Boz Dağlari.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/B26D87C8DB7C2C15AF99F97EBAD6FD53	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Depending from body length, also length of antennae, extent of dorsal punctuation and setation, as well as shape of pronotum and elytra are somewhat different.Already Schuster (1916) mentioned the high variability of body size and punctation in L. ferruginea, and synonymised therefore L. minima Motschulsky, 1858 . Random investigation of the aedeagus from different localities in the wide distributional area also show no distinct differences. According to this variability, the following three taxa are considered as new synonyms of L. ferruginea .

The description of L. liliputana Kaszab, 1968 from Turkey is based on 4 specimens, to be recognised by the small body size of 3 mm. This fits completely into the range.— L. clivinoides Baudi di Selve, 1876 from Cyprus was unknown to Weise (1878: p. 236) and Reitter (1900: p. 285). Available specimens from Cyprus show no distinct differences to specimens from Greece. Already Schuster (1916) assumed its synonymy.— L. constricta Iablokoff- Khnzoryan, 1957 was described from adjacent Armenia. The available specimens from Armenia cannot be distinguished from Greek specimens.

Remarks: L. syriaca Baudi di Selve, 1876 was described from Aleppo as variation of L. ferruginea . Reitter (1899) noted only Cyprus as locality for L. syriaca (because he did not know L. clivinoides). The status of this taxon remains unknown. Available specimens from Syria belong to L. longula Marseul, 1876 . See also under L. wanensis Schuster, 1940 .

Published localities: Several localities in the Balkan Mts., in Greece, and in Near East (Schuster 1916); Cyprus (type locality of L. clivinoides syn. nov.); Dodurga near Fethiye (type locality of L. liliputana syn. nov.); Side near Antalya (Ferrer & Soldati 1999 under L. syriaca); Armenia (type locality of L. constricta syn. nov.).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/B26D87C8DB7D2C13AF99F8ABBC9BFE9F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The above listed specimens from Cyprus (new record for this island) completely coincide with specimens in SMNS from the Near East, and are therefore assigned to L. glabriuscula and not to L. pici from southeastern Turkey.

Published locality: Lebanon (Schuster 1916).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/B26D87C8DB762C1EAF99FDBBBAAFFC5B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This is the old name of Iskenderun, which now belongs to Turkey. L. pici is said to be quite similar to L. byzantina, but in L. pici the posterior corners of the pronotum are tooth-like, whereas in L. byzantina these corners are rounded. The apicales of the aedeagi are also slightly different (compare Figs. 33, 37). See also remarks under L. glabriuscula .

Published locality: Alexandrette (= Iskenderun) (Schuster 1916).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/B26D87C8DB752C1DAF99FF4ABBCBFD08	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. At present, it seems impossible to separate this complex by morphology and only molecular studies might solve this problem.

Published locality: Wan (Schuster 1940).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/B26D87C8DB722C1AAF99FD26BAFFFA67	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
