BE00878FFFAB810846BB8B03FAF3651A.taxon	discussion	Brenske (1892) and Matsumoto (2008) thought that the presumed Australian record (labelled as “ Austrl. ”, Fig. 7) was doubtful. No specimens of H. burmeisteri were recorded by Britton (1978) in his comprehensive revision of the Australian Melolonthini, with the only record of Holotrichia spp. being a single, damaged, presumably transported specimen of H. serrata (Fabricius, 1781) by Blackburn (1890) [as Neolepidiota obscura Blackburn, 1890]. No further specimens of H. burmeisteri are known from the Philippines and the location was more recently considered doubtful by Matsumoto (2008). Brenske’s record presumably refers to when Spain administered the Caroline Islands as Nuevas Filipinas. Matsumoto (2008) concluded that the type series came from Palau.	en	Allsopp, Peter G. (2025): Holotrichia burmeisteri Brenske, 1892 and allies (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Rhizotrogini): a tale of four genera and four countries. BE00878FFFA9810846BB8883FB3E6691.taxon	description	Matsumoto (2008) examined the type series of H. burmeisteri, as well as additional specimens from Babelthuap, and transferred the species to the genus Metatrogus Britton, 1978. Metatrogus comprises four other species (Britton 1978; Allsopp 1999; Weir et al. 2019), all from eastern Queensland, Australia and 3200 – 4300 km south of Palau. Matsumoto (2008) based his transfer to the Melolonthina (now Melolonthini) mainly on the wing venation of H. burmeisteri and, presumably, on superficial similarities in the shape of the aedeagi but made no mention of examining any Metatrogus specimens. He curiously added “ Britton’s definition of Metatrogus applies very well to this species [burmeisteri] except for the following points: (1) ‘ hypopleuron’ of pronotum, abdomen, pygidium and propygidium without any adpressed white hairs; (2) anterior margin of pronotum rimmed throughout ”. Comparison of the type series of H. burmeisteri and specimens of the four Australian species of Metatrogus (M. castaneus Britton, 1978, M. lukei Allsopp, 1999, M. praeceps Britton, 1978, M. septuosus Britton, 1978; specimens in QM) shows that this transfer was incorrect. Amongst other characters, H. burmeisteri has: unmodified, elongate setae (Fig. 9) on the venter, whereas Metatrogus have flattened, white, adpressed setae (Fig. 11); the labrum deeply indented and forming two lobes (Fig. 8), whereas Metatrogus has the labrum indented to less than half length and the indentation is broadly rounded (Fig. 10); the antennal club is of three lamellae, whereas it is of three, five or six lamellae in Metatrogus; the metepisternum narrow (ratio 5: 1 to 6: 1) and metepimeron small (Fig. 9), whereas the metepisternum is rhomboid and the metepimeron is larger in Metatrogus (Fig. 11); parameres where the apices do not cross over and without a basal backward projection on each (Fig. 19), whereas three of the Metatrogus spp. have the apices of the parameres crossing over, and all have a basal backward projection on each paramere (Britton 1978, figs. 74 – 82; Allsopp 1999, fig. 3). In essence, H. burmeisteri clearly keys to the Rhizotrogini, whereas Metatrogus falls within the Melolonthini (Lacroix 2010, pp. 19 – 20). No endemic Rhizotrogini are known from Australia (Weir et al. 2019).	en	Allsopp, Peter G. BE00878FFFA2810246BB8A35FA4165A2.taxon	description	Description. Body 17.5 – 23.0 mm long. Colour yellow-brown with head, pronotum, scutellum and profemora brown-red, pronotum may be dark brown; elytra ranging from light yellow-brown to a mahogany brown. Mentum flat. Labrum strongly concave, appearing bilobed, level with anterior face of clypeus. Antennae of 10 antennomeres, club of 3 long lamellae, antennomere 7 may be flattened and leaf-like, club of male about 0.85 - 1 times length of scape, that of female about 0.5 times as long as scape. Anterior face of clypeus flat, indistinctly punctured; anterior clypeal margin arcuately rounded, reflexed, sometimes weakly but distinctly emarginate medially. Upper clypeus and frons with large, round punctures separated by less than twice their diameters. Pronotum wider than base of elytra, anterior margin broadly, weakly emarginate, posterior margin sinuate with a barely perceptible marginal line, lateral margin crenate, broadly, strongly rounded, anterolateral angle bluntly angulate, posterolateral angle slightly produced, blunt, surface smooth, shining, fine punctures separated by 1 – 3 times their diameters. Elytra smooth, shining, evenly punctured, strial punctures scarcely separable from other punctures, intervals 1, 3, 5 and 7 feebly convex, each puncture with a small, scarcely visible, white seta; epipleuron with a single row of intermixed long and short setae or with just short setae (0.5 mm long) forming a fringe visible in dorsal view, long setae about 1.0 mm long basally, decreasing in length towards apex. Pygidium nearly triangular, roughly sculptured with elongate punctures scabrous and wrinkled in apical third. Metasternum densely pubescent, punctured, midline complete. Abdomen with sterna 2 – 5 connate medially, very fine, setigerous punctures present, becoming sparse medially, denser laterally. Protibia tridentate in apical half, anterior spur long, slender, parallel sided, pointed or blunt, slightly shorter than or as long as protarsomere 1. Meso- and metatibiae each with a row of sharp serrations on outer margin next to body, inner spur shorter than or about as long as outer, both pointed. Tarsal claws with a small, sharp tooth near base, directed toward base of claw. Parameres each with a basal backwardly-directed tooth, apex dilated with ventral and dorsal apices rounded and feebly emarginate.	en	Allsopp, Peter G.
