In the hindwing, M 3 and Cu 1 are mostly stalked but entirely fused in a few species, and M 2 is close to the base of the stalk of M 3 and Cu 1. In the male genitalia, the uncus is well developed, bifurcate longitudinally, or reduced in some species; the socii are usually two, droopy, broad, often with long free end; and the sacculus has a distinct angle. In the female genitalia, the signa are usually two, flattened with a blade-shaped termination.

Ancylis is closely related to Ancylophyes Diakonoff, which was originally described as Ancyloides, a subgenus of Ancylis Hübner (Diakonoff, 1982) . Ancylophyes was a junior homonym of Ancyloides Kuznetsov, a subgenus of Eucosmomorpha Obraztsov (Kuznetsov, 1964) . Diakonoff (1988) later proposed the replacement name Ancylophyes for Ancyloides . Recently Horak (2006) assumed Ancylophyes should be treated as a genus based on a genus–level apomorphy, which we follow here. Ancylis can be distinguished from Ancylophyes by the two and droopy socii, the sacculus with a distinct angle and the signa flattened with a bladeshaped termination in the female genitalia. In Ancylophyes, the socius is one and upturned; the sacculus is straight, inward rolled and lacks a distinct angle in the male genitalia. In addition, the two signa vary in shape and size: one is horned, the other is flattened with a blade-shaped termination in the female genitalia.

Ancylis is distributed on every continent. The larvae are leaf-rollers on a variety of hostplants, including Ericaceae, Salicaceae, Fagaceae, Betulaceae, Ulmaceae, Rhamnaceae, Fabaceae and Rosaceae (Byun et al. 1998; Liu and Li 2002).

Key to the species of Ancylis Hübner from China based on male genitalia (excluding A. glycyphaga Meyrick and A. arcitenens Meyrick)

1 Uncus present............................................ 2

- Uncus absent............................................ 19

2 Uncus about 1/5 length of socius.............. Vertex and frons brown. Antenna dark brown. Labial palpus pale yellow; second segment with long scales; third segment shorter than second, slightly drooping. Thorax dark brown. Tegula pale yellow. Forewing with upperside ground color dark brown to grayish-white; basal patch dark brown, semiovoid, extending from base to 2/3 length of dorsum; median fascia and tornus grayish-white; subapical patch yellowish-brown, inverted triangular; costa with nine pairs of strigulae from base to apex, each strigula with a gray-silvery stria extending obliquely; strigulae one to four distributed between base of the wing and the point where Sc meets costa, separated from each other by dark brown spots; pairs of strigulae one and two occupying interfascial position, between basal and sub-basal fascia, situated before 1/10 forewing length, striae rarely extending beyond Sc; pairs of strigulae three and four occupying interfascial position between sub-basal and median fascia, with striae extending backward to 1/3 and 1/4 length of costa, respectively; each pair of strigulae (3–4) may be divided into four marks; strigulae five and six approximate at distal margin of median fascia, appearing as a single paired strigula; striae from these pairs usually confluent to termen; the distal three pairs distributed between pairs of veins R 1 –R 2, R 2 –R 3 and R 3 –R 4, respectively, bordered by reddish-brown and dark brown, separated from each other by dark brown spots; striae arising from them often becoming confluent to termen, extending to the point where R 5 meets termen; cilia with basal half grayish-white, distal half grayish-brown. Hindwing with upperside ground and cilia grayish-brown. Legs grayish-yellow, tarsi with dark brown scales. Abdomen grayish-brown.

Male genitalia (Figure 26). Uncus robust, entirely bifurcate. Socius ovoid, setose. Aedeagus thick, cornuti consisting of a bundle of small spines, somewhat pectinately shaped.

Female genitalia (Figure 49). Papilla analis slender. Apophysis anterioris shorter than apophysis posterioris, both short. Sterigma obtuse isoceles triangle. Antrum short, well sclerotized. Ductus bursae short, one-half length of corpus bursae. Ductus seminalis originating posterior to corpus bursae. Corpus bursae ovoid, with a pair of differently sized blade-shaped signa.

Distribution

China (Gansu, Guizhou, Shaanxi) .

Diagnosis

This new species is similar to A. partitana in the male genitalia, but differs from it in the following aspects: in the new species, the basal patch is semiovoid, extending from the base to 2/3 the length of the dorsum on the forewing; the ventral margin of the valva has two square projections, and the neck is robust, twice the width of the aedeagus in the male genitalia. In A. partitana, the basal patch is obliquely semicircular, extending from the middle of the costa to 1/3 the length of the dorsum; the ventral margin of the valva has two triangular projections, and the neck is slender, 1.5 the width of the aedeagus.

Etymology

The specific name is derived from the Latin prefix ventr-, meaning ventral, and verticalis meaning square, referring to the ventral margin with two square projections.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/BC053223FFD8FF97FEB01FDCB8D6FDC1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In A. unculana, the uncus is bifurcate; the socius is large, equal to the width of the aedeagus; and the sterigma is ring-shaped.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/BC053223FFD1FF8DFE361E75B828FB8C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species is characterized by the forewing with the gray dorsal blotch (Figure 22). It is similar to A. apicella in the male genitalia, but can be distinguished by the bifurcate uncus, the ovoid socius, the sacculus with an obtusely triangular projection, and the slender aedeagus as long as the valva (Figure 45). In A. apicella, the uncus is absent; the socius is triangular; the sacculus has a sharply triangular projection; the aedeagus is half of the length of valva.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/BC053223FFC2FF83FE841BEFBF25FACB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. It is similar to A. badiana in facies (Figure 23), but can be distinguished by the reduced uncus in the male genitalia (Figure 46) and the ringed sterigma (Figure 65). In the latter, the uncus is developed and bifurcate; the sterigma is semicircular. It is also similar to A. loktini in the male genitalia. The differences between them are discussed under A. loktini .

Ancylis upupana (Treitschke, 1835)

(Figures 24, 47, 66)

Phoxopteris upupana Treitschke, 1835:120 . This species can be separated from other congeners by the forewing with dark brown spots and streaks throughout from the base to the subterminal fascia (Figure 24). It is similar to A. loktini in the male genitalia, but is easily distinguishable by the sacculus with a small apical protrusion, the cucullus narrowed distally with lobe-shaped apex (Figure 47). In A. loktini, the sacculus has a large apical protrusion, the cucullus is slightly expanded distally, and the apex is right-angled. The female genitalia are distinguished by the V-shaped sterigma and two different-sized signa (Figure 66).

Ancylis youmiae Byun and Yan, 2005

(Figure 25, 48)

Ancylis youmiae Byun and Yan, 2005:18 .
