Cycreon sculpturatus Orchymont, 1919 (by original designation).

Differential diagnosis (following Hansen (1989, 1991), Short & Fikáček (2011, 2013)). The genus belongs to the tribe Megasternini and can be thus distinguished from other Sphaeridiinae by the following characters: head narrowed in front of eyes such that the antennal bases are exposed; clypeus weakly convex in lateral view, its lateral portions without angulate lateral projections; labrum membranous, partly retracted under clypeus; antennal clubs compact; lateral margins of mentum converging anteriorly, without fringe of setae; prothorax with antennal grooves (Fig. 7); mesoventrite fused with mesanepisterna, i.e. anapleural sutures completely absent; mesoventrite with grooves for reception of procoxae; elytral epipleura are not visible adjacent to abdomen; abdominal ventrite 1 much longer than ventrite 2; maxilla with sucking disc on males (Fig. 14).

Cycreon is distinguished from the remaining genera of Megasternini by the following combination of characters: antennal grooves of prosternum very small, looking like shallow concavities, defined laterally by a very obsolete ridge situated very close to the notosternal suture (Fig. 7); mesoventrite very narrow, linearly raised medially (Figs. 2, 4); abdominal ventrite 1 not carinate medially; male sternite 9 tongue-like (Fig. 22).

Redescription. 2.6–3.3 mm. Oval, flattened. Body unicolour reddish to yellowish. Upper surface shining, delicately punctate. Ventral surface finely pubescent (except mentum, medial parts of meso- and metaventrite). Clypeus distinctly defined from the frons by lateral branches of epicranial suture, excised on the middle of front edge, finely edged (Figs. 9, 13). Eyes rather convex, rather projecting. Mentum impressed and emarginate anteriorly. Antennae 9-segmented, pedicel much shorter than scape, cupule rather large, club compact, widened distally almost to apex, which appears truncate. Mandibles with two teeth on the apex. Male maxilla with sucking disc. Pronotum almost 2× as wide as long, with rounded anterior and especially posterior corners, lateral margins and angles finely edged (Figs. 6, 16). Surface of pronotum with reduced medial fovea in front of the base. Elytra with 10 moderately strong punctate striae (10th reduced to interrupted row of punctures), interstices flat; humeral tubercles slightly elevated; epipleura evenly narrowed to the level of abdomen. Prosternum bulging in middle, not carinate, with minute antennal grooves (Fig. 7). Mesoventrite bulging posteromedially, without abruptly raised tablet, simply tectiform, with glabrous median carina, produced into a fine spine posteriorly. Metaventrite with raised, pentagonal and glabrous field; without anterolateral arcuate ridges. Metepisterna rather wide, parallelsided. Legs relatively long: pro- and mesofemora visible protruded for edges of pronotum and elytra. Surface of legs shining, not pubescent. Tarsi densely covered by setae. Tarsomere 1 of middle and hind tarsi longer than tarsomere 2. Ventrite 1 not carinate. Male sternite 9 tongue-like (Fig. 22).

Ecology. Members of this genus are mentioned as visitors of inflorescences of Aracaeae plants in Borneo, including: Phymatarum borneense M. Hotta, 1965 and Schismatoglottis sarikeensis (Bogner & M. Hotta, 2008) A. Hay & Bogner, 2012 . (placed in the genus Schottarum) (Low, 2015).

Distribution. Southeast Asia (Singapore, insular Malaysia, and Borneo).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/D9616011B17CFFDCFF4CFBD06B8AFEE4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Body size: 2.6 mm long, 1.6 mm wide. Upper and lower surface with microsculpture and not brightly shining (Figs. 1–2). Clypeus short: about 4× width as long, lateral edges obliqued (Fig. 9); its middle portion of the apex is not elevated (Fig. 5). Pronotum evenly rounded in base (Fig. 6), with reduced medial fovea and two lateral foveae near the base (probably, this character may be variable). Scutellar shield short: its length is about the width of the base. Meso- and metatibiae straight (Figs. 11–12). (Figs. 3–4, 13–24, 27)

Type material. Holotype: SINGAPORE (MHNB). 1 ♂. Labels—in Fig. 27.

Diagnosis. Larger in size than C. sculpturatus; dorsal surface of head and pronotum with dotty microsculpture consisting of deep, small and not so closely disposed punctures as at C. sculpturatus; clypeus prolongate, scutellum elongate, meso- and metatibiae curved (the latter character probably only present in males).

Description. Body length 3.3 mm, width 2.0 mm. Dorsal and ventral surfaces brightly shining (except of pubescent ventral side), with reduced microsculpture (Figs. 3–4). Punctures of head and pronotum deep, small (about 0,0 15 mm), separate by ca. one diameter (Fig. 17). Clypeus oblong: ca. 3× as wide as long, lateral edges straight (Fig. 13); middle part of its apex elevated (Fig. 15). Base of pronotum slightly protruded medially (Fig. 16), with reduced basal fovea. Scutellar shield about twice as long as wide on the base. Meso- and metatibiae curved (Figs. 18–21). Aedeagophore: Figs. 22–24. Parameres (Fig. 23): length 0.88 mm, width 0.23 mm; basal piece is 0.47 of total length; parameres narrowed to the apex, their outer edge on most of extension straight, deflects outwards before the apex, inner edge straight from the base and after middle, rounded at the middle of extension and before the apical part, having two setae before the apex (both tops of parameres in this specimen probably may be broken off). Aedeagus (Fig. 24): length 0.82 mm, width 0.1 mm; expanded after ¼ of the length from the base and before the apex; lateral edges sinuated, form of top close to rectangle. Sternite 9 (Fig. 22) having tongue-like form, length of base 0.33 mm, width 0.11 mm; length of side straps 0.46 mm (left) and 0.50 mm (right).

Etymology. The species is named after Armand d’Orchymont, following his preliminary (and correct) presumption that this specimen represented a distinct, undescribed species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/D9616011B17DFFDFFF4CFCF46B72F953	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
