The specimen identified by Nagatomi (1984: 125) as Austroleptis sp., male, from “ Chile, Aysén Puerto Aysén, 24–26.i.1961, Pena [Peña]”, as one can read, of which the male terminalia was illustrated by him (see Nagatomi 1984: 125, figs. 60–63), was later assigned to A. atrata by Nagatomi & Nagatomi (1987: 143). They, however, mentioned that the illustrated specimen in 1984 is from “[Argentina, Tierra del Fuego], Ushuaia, 8-26.ii.1961, B. Malkin”, which is followed here, as this locality is near the type locality: Puerto Williams, Chile. This species is, therefore, only known from two specimens, the holotype and the additional male (Nagatomi 1984; Nagatomi & Nagatomi 1987). The depository institution of the holotype is currently unknown as it was not found in the BBM, CNC, NMHUK, or USNM collections.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E34087BC8D0FFFE27A8757DEECEBF9F7	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Nagatomi & Nagatomi (1987: 145) mentioned that an illustration of the wing of this species can be found in Nagatomi (1984), page 112, fig. 31, but this is incorrect, as it refers to Dialysis iwatai Nagatomi, 1953 .

Austroleptis atriceps has several long setae on flagellomere 1, one of them rather long, reaching to flagellomere 4. The first flagellomere has a field of short, stiff white setae on its apical side (Fig. 17), which none of the other Austroleptis species seem to have. Additionally, the species is characterized by a flagellum with five flagellomeres, with flagellomeres 2–4 subequal in size, often dark brown, head dark brown to black, and distal palpus enlarged, rounded, shorter than basal segment (Nagatomi & Nagatomi 1987). The two females from Malleco Province (Figs 8–11) matched the type, but their distal palpus is nearly as long as the basal segment, and they do not have as many setae on the veins as seen in the male (Fig. 16) or the female specimens of A. atriceps reported by (Fachin et al. 2018: 566, fig. 21). It should be noted that the pattern of setae on the wing veins of the holotype and paratype (Figs 2 and 5), however, matches that of the females from Malleco Province. Our male was not compared to the male allotype, which is likely lost, as was not found in the NHMUK collection, nor with the other two provided by Nagatomi & Nagatomi (1987). The female from Puerto Cisnes, Aysén Province (Figs 12–14) is a much lighter specimen of the species and only the flagellomere 5 is dark brown. It is worth mentioning that the flagellum of none of the specimens here or elsewhere reported (see Fachin et al. 2018) matches that of the female paratype (the flagellum is absent in the holotype), in which it seems that only the last three flagellomeres are dark brown, or as illustrated by Nagatomi & Nagatomi (1987), in which the flagellomeres 2–4 are dark brown.

There is one additional female, labeled “ Chile, Malleco, 14 km E. Chile: Maule Region: Curicó Province (Cordillera Curicó, El Coigo); Ñuble Región: Diguillín Province (Las Trancas); Los Lagos Region: Llanquihue Province (Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales, Casa Pangue), Chiloé Province (Dalcahue) (Figs 73, 77).

Comments. The female from Las Trancas (Fig. 44) has the same collection label as the specimen of A. breviflagella above from Las Trancas (Figs 32). Although they are from the same collecting event, the two species are clearly distinct. Austroleptis fulviceps has five flagellomeres, of which 2 to 5 are black (Fig. 45), the thorax has a lighter coloration (Figs 43, 46) and the pterostigma is yellowish (Fig. 48), not dark brown as in the A. breviflagella specimen (Fig. 30). There is one additional specimen, male, from “El Radal, Talca, 900 mts, 26.xi.1957, L.E. Peña // USNM ENT 00024149 (CNC) (Figs 50–53), identified as Austroleptis cf. fulviceps . As the male of A. fulviceps is not known, we think that this specimen is the male of the species, because it has 5 flagellomeres, the second palpus segment shorter than the first, antennal flagellomeres 2 to 5 not shorter than the combination of scape, pedicel, and flagellomere, and flagellomeres with several long setae. The characters not fitting the description (of the female) are: i) the halteres are described as yellowish brown, while they are dark brown in this male; ii) the flagellomeres are described as all black, while only the last two flagellomeres are black (the rest is orange) in this male; and iii) the second palpus segment is black according to the original description, while it is bright orange in this specimen.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E34087BC8D00FFED7A87564BEB79FA66	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
