Balbisia meyeniana Klotzsch (1836: 432)

Type: [PERU. Depto. Tacna:], Cordillera bei Tacna, Meyen s.n. anno 1831 (B †), Laguna de Titicaca, v. Besser 54 (B †).— Neotype (here designated): PERU. In Peru the species appears to be restricted to the two southwestern Departments Moquegua and Tacna and has not so far been found further north, in spite of copious collections now available from Arequipa. The leaves are glabrous to puberulent and glaucous in the living state (Fig. 1 D) and lack both dense, sericeous pubescence and a revolute leaf margin (present in all the other species here treated). Balbisia meyeniana often has a distinctly red calyx (Fig. 1 F) and a very sparsely branched, glabrous or puberulent epicalyx (Figs. 1 F, 2 F).

The northernmost Peruvian collection (Weigend & Baldárrago 9366, Fig. 1 B) was found only a few kilometers south of the village of Puquina while just north of that village is the southernmost population of B. verticillata (Weigend & Baldárrago 9367, Fig. 1 A). Which factors maintain this well-defined distribution limit is entirely unclear. The Bolivian specimens seen differ in being slightly more pubescent, especially the trichomes on the epicalyx are long (and equal the diameter of the epicalyx segments). However, they lack the sericeous pubescence and recurved leaf margins typical of B. verticillata and have to be referred to B. meyeniana for the time being.

Representative specimens: PERU. Filament length does not appear to vary at all between populations and the former apparent distribution gap has been closed by collections from Ayacucho and Apurímac. Leaf size varies according to season and precipitation, and is not taxonomically informative (see Fig. 1 C: dry season and Fig. 1 E: wet season). The calyx of B. verticillata is usually densely sericeous, green, sometimes slightly blushed with red and the epicalyx has repeatedly branched elements and is densely pubescent to villous (Fig. 2 E).

There is considerable variability in leaf size and density of pubescence across the range of the species, and flowers tend to be considerably smaller during the dry season. However, morphological differences are not consistent between populations and are of no taxonomic relevance. Balbisia weberbaueri is therefore here reduced to synonymy under B. verticillata .

Ledocarpon chiloense was erroneously considered to come from Chile by Desfontaines (1818), but Don (1831) already voiced doubts and hinted at a likely origin in Peru and its identity with B. verticillata . The table in Desfontaines (1818) leaves no doubt that this is the typical Lima-form of B. verticillata and it has been erroneously ascribed to the flora of Chile. Dombey likely collected it near Lima, possibly in the same area as Née.

Specimens seen: PERU. Depto. Lima: Prov.
