As no reliable features have been detected in the external skeleton, differences in the form of the spermathecae have always been considered to be the best method of determining species. But there is undoubtedly considerable variety present in these organs, particularly amongst the parthenogenetic species, presumably as they evolve towards extinction (Darby 2014), so that these determinations require to be viewed with caution. Also, the spermathecae are often very faintly sclerotised and do not show up in dissections even when a microscope with differential interference contrast is used. Sometimes the presence of an air bubble is the only guide to shape. As a result it is possible that future research may show some of the species, particularly in the frosti, invisibilis group for example, to be varieties of the same species.

In dorsal view Bambara species are only likely to be confused with Babrama Johnson in the Ptiliini, from which they may be separated by the possession of adjacent metacoxae, and in the Acrotrichinae with some of the smaller, paler Acrotrichis from which they may be separated by the proportionately longer elytra covering the abdomen.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/FB2187F6FFD1FFDDFDF6FCC1F7AEFA82	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Nelloptodes species are most like Ptinellodes but distinguished from that genus by the female’s lack of internal abdominal claws.

Etymology: Derived from Ptinella and Ptinellodes both of which display features included in the new genus.

Description

Body elongate, shining, covered with fine yellow pubescence, slightly longer on the head than on the elytra. Antennomeres X–XI forming a loosely jointed club. Mentum anterior border strongly concave, with two long setae situated below the anterior corners. Prementum with ± 5 setae. Pronotum distinctly domed, broader than long, finely bordered, lateral margins evenly rounded to rounded hind angles, anterior margin narrower than posterior, both posterior and anterior margins slightly sinuous in dorsal view. Scutellum short, very broad anteriorly. Elytra almost quadrate, subtruncate apically, exposing 5 abdominal tergites, reticulate and shallowly foveolate, the setae arising from the barely concave posterior margins of the cells. Proventrum broad in front of procoxae, lacking reticulation medially, with a row of setae along the anterior margin interrupted medially, and of much smaller setae along the underside of the lateral margins. Mesoventrum without pubescence, strongly reticulate throughout, collar without a clearly defined posterior margin, humeri with a small tooth, keel less sharply defined than in Ptinella species, ending in a sharp point between the mesocoxae, mesocoxae contiguous. Metaventrum pubescent and reticulate, without evidence of episternal sutures (lines), metacoxae widely separated. Dimorphism present, the vestigial morph lacking wings and eyes appearing to be the dominant form; the normal morph with eyes and wings.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/FB2187F6FFDAFFD6FE05FF06F44EFC3E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This suggests that they belong in a separate genus (or two – on grounds of elytral chaetotaxy, Figs 10E, 13E?), but they are placed for the time being in Ptinella until more species become available for study and more is known about the genus. Their smaller size, more flattened, less rounded, less shining form, and the shape of the pronota, quickly distinguish them from Nelloptodes . From P. concinna (Britten, as re-described by Johnson 1985) the new species are distinguished by having a secondary part to the spermathecal receptacle larger than that of the basal part to which the pump is attached.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/FB2187F6FFD9FFD3FE0BFA0DF517FE9A	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
