Distribution. Gulf of Guinea, from Benin to Gabon. In Equatorial Guinea it has been recorded from Río Muni (close to Bata and Dijbloho) (Iverson 1992; Luiselli et al. 2018; Rhodin et al. 2017) (Map 2A).
Comments. The phylogenetic relationships of the genus Pelusios are discussed by Stuckas et al. (2013). Pelusios niger is the sister lineage to P. cupulatta Bour & Maran, 2003 (Stuckas et al. 2013).
