Eumeces Wiegmann, 1834

A Palearctic genus with five currently recognized species. Even after retracting the Oriental and Nearctic species from the genus (today Plestiodon), Eumeces still remains paraphyletic with respect to the genera Scincus and Scincopus (Schmitz et al. 2004; Carranza et al. 2008; Pyron et al. 2013). Therefore, additional nomenclatural adjustments are needed to stabilize this taxonomically unsatisfactory situation.
