Eoophyla leucostola (Hampson, 1917) comb. n.
Argyractis leucostola Hampson, 1917: 363 .
Type locality: Malawi, Mt Mulanje.
Imago (Fig. 36, 37): Wingspan 18–22mm. Head white; labial palpus segment 3 tapered, long and slender, segment 2 about as long as 3; antenna dull ochreous. Thorax pale fuscous. Forewing ground colour white, costa suffused dark fuscous; an oblique fuscous median fascia, usually a double line; a brownish mark in disc extended towards tornus; dark fuscous costal strigula including whitish and ochreous; a dark fuscous subterminal line; termen yellow, bounded by a fine dark fuscous line; tornal spot metallic grey preceded by yellowish on dorsum; cilia pale fuscous. Hindwing white; a straight yellow subbasal fascia, outwardly edged fuscous; a diffuse fuscous antemedian spot near dorsum; a double fuscous subterminal line dorsally filled with yellow; termen yellow; terminal cilia inner half fuscous.
Variation: In about half of the specimens examined (from the same locality and date) there are four eyespots, 2 and 3 each with a pair of blue metallic dots, 1 and 4 each with one, eyespots separated by orange.
Male genitalia (Fig. 104): Uncus spatulate; gnathos ¾ length of uncus, strongly sclerotised and tapering towards the tip which bears reversed pointing spines on the dorsal surface; valva simple, ovate, with strong setae arising from the apical area; juxta with fine spines around edge; aedeagus cylindrical, tip clothed with find spines, a small spiculate area before spiny section.
Female genitalia (Fig. 168): Ostium wide, antrum contracted towards colliculum, with sclerotised wrinkly folds; ductus slightly longer than antrum, gradually widening into corpus bursae, signum comprising a long sclerotised ridge set with bilateral spiny projections.
Tympanal organs: Venulae almost straight, widely separated; tympani slightly projecting forwards.
Diagnosis: Distinguished by the double postmedian fascia of the hindwing.
Biology: Unknown, adults recorded in v, viii, x.
Distribution: Malawi to Tanzania.
Material examined: Lectotype ♂ hereby designated; six paralectotypes 1♂ with slide 21345, 5♀ all from Malawi: Mt Mlanje.
6♂, 3♀ with same data as lectotype (with eyespots) also Lenibe 1♀, Limbe 1♀ (BMNH) TANZANIA: 1♂, 1♀ Uzungwa Mts, Chita Forest Reserve & Mwanihana forest above Sanje (ZMUC); Udzungwa Mts . 1♂ (DJLA) .
