Pipunculus stackelbergi Kuznetzov, 1991: 39

The description of P. stackelbergi is based on the female holotype, collected in the vicinity of St. Petersburg (Yashchers, Luga distr., NW Russia). The specimen was not obtained for study and its identity has to be considered as insufficiently known at present. Kuznetzov (1991) places it close to P. campestris, distinguishing it by the reddish-yellow flagellum and its absolutely straight piercer, the latter not entirely figured and therefore hard to assess (reproduced in Figs 53–54). It is interesting that the pollinosity of the abdominal tergites is described as brownish because in all other European female Pipunculus it is exclusively or predominantly grey, at least laterally. The other characters provided in the identification key below have to be considered with care, as they may exhibit some degree of variability as is the case in other species of the genus.
