Type locality. WC, ‘Knysna Forest, in and under rotten wood, leaves & c’.

Distribution. This subspecies is known from the area of Knysna seven sites, all in the coastal-belt in the southeastern Western Cape. WC, Knysna Main Forest. Deep Walls Researh Hill, pinewoods on the south slope, under pine needles. Native forest on south slope in damp soil, leaf mould. Garden of Eden in rotting wood and leaf mould. Zwart river on Knysna road near George, in the leaf mould. Veldschoen’s Drift, near Knysna, in wooded ‘kloof’. EC: Storms River, forest and river bank. Alexandria Forest Station, north of Port Elizabeth. KZN: Entumeni National Park.

Remarks. Pickford raised Chilota photodilus f. castaneus Michaelsen, 1913 to subspecies level. Syntypes: three tubes numbered SAM 100 (SAMC) with no legible locality labels containing 4 decomposed specimens. Other material: HNHM AF/2542, AF/2560, AF/2585, AF/2589; NMSA/Olig.00337.
