Taxonomy. Reithrodon fossor Thomas, 1899, “ Salta Province, N. Argentina.”

The species fossor was originally used by O. Thomas in 1925 as the type species of Chelemyscus . Holotype of Reithrodon fossor is a composite including a skull referable to Euneomys and a skin belonging to Paynomys. Because the skull was originally designated as the type, the name remains available.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality, the exact position of which is unknown because Salta is a large province in N Argentina .
