Lanistes solidus Smith, 1878: 716, pl. 74, figs. 10, 11. Type material — syntypes: NHMUK 1877.9.28.24 (2 spms.). Type locality —“Lake Nyassa” [in publication title]. Distribution —endemic to Lake Malawi (Brown 1980: 54, 1994: 61; Berthold 1990: 48).

Remarks. Variety of ellipticus Martens, teste Kobelt (1909: 78). Synonym of ellipticus Martens, teste Connolly (1912: 257). Synonym of procerus Martens, teste Haas (1936: 36). Valid species, teste Kobelt (1912b: 10), G.B. Sowerby III (1916: 68) and Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 187), who placed it in Lanistes s . str., and Brown (1980: 54, 1994: 61) and Berthold (1991: 246), who both placed it in Lanistes subg. Meladomus . Here treated as a valid species, following these authors. Misspelled as “ solidulus ” by Gaudion (1880: 40) and Paetel (1888: 481).
