Ampullaria purpurea Jonas, 1839: 342, pl. 10, fig. 1. Type material —ZMB [“Zool. Mus. Berlin” (Connolly 1912: 259), but not mentioned by Köhler & Glaubrecht (2006) and not found in 2014]. Type locality —“Schwanenflufs in Australien ” [Swan River, Australia; error; = Madagascar (Troschel 1845: 216)]. Distribution — Madagascar (Troschel 1845: 216), Zanzibar and Bagamoyo [Tanzania] (Philippi 1851: 22; Martens 1897b: 116), Mozambique (Dohrn 1865: 233; Paetel 1873: 65, 1883: 76, 1888: 481).

Remarks. Synonym of olivacea G.B. Sowerby I, teste G.B. Sowerby III (1916: 68) and Connolly (1939: 556). Possible senior synonym of ovum Troschel, teste Brown (1980: 54) but purpurea and ovum both treated as valid species by Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 195), Brown (1994: 63) and Berthold (1991: 246), followed here, who all placed purpurea in Lanistes subg. Meladomus .
