nyassanus

Lanistes nyassanus Dohrn, 1865: 233 . Type material —location unknown [possibly destroyed, not found in MCZ or NHMUK (cf. Dance 1986: 210)]. Type locality —“south end of Nyassa... Lake Pamolombue” [south end of Lake Malawi ... Lake Malombe]. Distribution —no additional information.

Remarks. Gaudion (1880: 35) and Bourguignat (1879: 39) both listed it from the Zambezi, probably considering the type locality part of the Zambezi system, although it is the Shire River, a tributary of the Zambezi, that connects Lakes Malawi and Malombe, and Dohrn (1865: 233) explicitly said it was not found in the Zambezi. Brown (1980: 52, 1994: 61) and Berthold (1990: 48) incorrectly stated that it was endemic to Lake Malawi. Valid species, teste Kobelt (1911: 17), who placed it in Meladomus, and G.B. Sowerby III (1916: 67), Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 187), Brown (1980: 52, 1994: 61) and Berthold (1991: 246), who all placed it in Lanistes s . str. Type species of Nyassana Bourguignat, here synonymized with Lanistes Montfort.

olivacea

Ampullaria olivacea Lamarck, 1816: 12, pl. 457, figs. 1a, b. Type material —location unknown [not listed in MNHG (Mermod 1952: 97)]. Type locality —[no locality given].

Remarks. Lamarck (1822a: 178) listed olivacea Lamarck in the synonymy of guinaica Lamarck. Synonym of varica Müller, teste Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 187; as “Bory de St. Vincent ”).
