Holotype: FMNH 70709, 175 mm SL.

Distribution: western Atlantic off the southeastern United States from Cape Lookout, North Carolina, to Dry Tortugas, Florida; also, based on a photograph of a fish caught in Norfolk Canyon, may range as far north as Virginia Beach, Virginia, (Anderson & Heemstra, 2012: 86).
