Lectotype: CAS–SU 229, 143 mm SL (designated by Anderson & Heemstra, 2012:113).

Type locality: Gulf of California (ALBATROSS station 2996: 24°30'15” N, 110°29'00” W; 112 fathoms = 205 meters). Illustrations: Anderson & Heemstra, 2012, fig. 30; Fitch, 1982, fig. 2.

D: X, 14 or 15 (usually 15). A: III, 7 to 9 (almost always 8). P: 16 to 19 (usually 17, rarely 16 or 19). C: 15 (8 + 7). V: 26 (10 + 16). S: 2. GR: 38 to 43, usually 39 to 41 (10 to 13 + 27 to 30). LL: 36 to 40. CP: 22 to 25.

Distribution: eastern Pacific from “mid-Gulf of California (28° N)” (Fitch, 1982:3) to Colombia (6.5° N) and off Cocos Island (Bussing & Lopez, 2005:78) (Anderson & Heemstra, 2012:114).
