World distribution. Colombia and Chile.

Chilean distribution. From Arica y Parinacota to Tarapacá region (Fig. 147).

Altitudinal range. From the precordillera to highland ecosystems (1,870 –3,250 m.a.s.l.).

Biology and notes. Copestylum gibbera is associated with highlands in the Atacama province (Morrone 2014). Although it has been recorded in Colombia (Montoya 2016), this species should be classified as VU in Chile due to habitat loss generated by mining and water exploitation and the potential effects of climate change. Other aspects of its biology and ecology remain unknown in Chile.

Conservation status. EN under B2ab (iii) using AOO = 16 km 2 and four localities (or subpopulations); EOO = 46,144 km 2.
