World distribution. Chile.

Chilean distribution. From Valparaíso to La Araucanía region (Fig. 157).

Altitudinal range. From coastal to precordillera ecosystems (0–1000 m.a.s.l.).

Biology and notes. Philippi (1865) mentioned Pipiza flavipes Philippi as a junior synonym of Sterphus flavipes (Shannon & Aubertin 1933, Thompson et al. 1976), which was synonymized under P. aurantipes (Thompson et al. 1976) . Etcheverry (1963) and Thompson (1972b) comment that P. flavipes has no description and that the synonymy was based only on a catalog. Pipiza flavipes should be considered incertae sedis and therefore it was not incorporated into this study. Four specimens in the MNHNCL labeled as P. flavipes clearly belong to P. aurantipes . The examined material and distribution were added to the information of the latter species. The species has been observed in flowers of Loasa triloba Dombey ex Juss. (Claudio Arancibia, CSP record; Fig. 152).
