World distribution. Chile.

Chilean distribution. From Coquimbo to Los Ríos region (Fig. 78).

Altitudinal range. This species inhabits mainly inland valleys between 490 and 600 m. a.s.l.

Biology and notes. Pia cyanea is associated with native shrublands and forests. This habitat has been intensively replaced by different human being activities such as croplands, forestry or urbanization (Alaniz et al., 2016; Miranda et al., 2017). The placement of this genus has been uncertain among the Eristalinae species. The description provided by Philippi (1865) does not provide sufficient characters to assign a correct tribe. For the moment, it has been placed by Shannon and Aubertin (1933) inside of Chilosiinae (currently Brachyopini) while recognizing this taxonomic problem. There are no studies of its biology and ecology of this species.

Conservation status. EN under B2ab (iii) using AOO = 20 km 2 and five localities (or subpopulations); EOO = 66,885 km 2.
