Type:— BRAZIL. without locality, s.d., G. Gardner s.n. (FH, n.v., holotype; fide Hale 1965a) .

The species was reported from Réunion by van den Boom et al. (2011) based on two collections. One (B 60 0135114) is Parmotrema paramascarenense described here. The other one (herb. v.d. Boom 39783) is assigned to P. robustum . The three Reunionese specimens in O determined as P. gardneri by H. Krog (O L-231243, L-231244, L-231262) are also assigned to P. robustum . So far, there is no convincing evidence for the presence of P. gardneri on Réunion (see entry for P. robustum).
