Distribution and ecology: —Endemic to the mountains of Costa Rica and adjacent Panama. It is locally distributed in humid montane forests at 1500–2200 m, growing in open thickets on hillsides, on roadbanks, and on eroded slopes. Often co-occurs with S. retroflexus .
