Pangio anguillaris (Vaillant 1902)

Cobitophis perakensis: Herre, 1940b: 8 (Chenderoh Dam).

Pangio anguillaris: Kottelat & Lim, 1993: 214 (Perak drainages).

Remarks. From phylogenetic analyses, Bohlen et al. (2011) proposed that there are three major lineages within the genus Pangio, namely the anguillaris lineage, the shelfordii lineage and the kuhlii -oblonga lineage. The anguillaris -lineage comprise P. anguillaris, P. bitaimac, P. doriae and P. lumbriciformis . They hypothesized that phylogenetic pattern of the genus Pangio was the result of a vicariance event that separated the common ancestor into Bornean and Peninsular Malaysian sub-groups. Since the type locality P. anguillaris is Kapuas in Borneo, specimens recorded in Peninsular Malaysia, the Chao Phraya and the lower Mekong basins may be confused under this name. We recognize that there may be a possible taxonomic revision in the future.
