Proarna bufo Distant, 1905d
Proarna bufo Distant 1905d: 312 . (Argentina and Bolivia)
REMARKS. Sanborn & Heath (2014) determined there is a geographical separation between P. bergi and P. bufo . Specimens of P. bufo were found to have a southern and eastern distribution within Argentina and P. bergi was found in the northern and western parts of the country including provinces that border Bolivia. The distribution of P. bergi makes more sense as expanding into Bolivia as the records of P. bufo are geographically separated from Bolivia by several hundred kilometers. In addition, we determined that P. bufo is restricted to plant communities that do not extend into Bolivia from Argentina (Sanborn & Heath 2014). For these reasons, P. bufo is removed from the Bolivian cicada fauna. It may be that Distant had both species included in the type series for P. bufo . However, this change does not influence the validity of P. bufo following Article 17 of the Code (ICZN 1999). The specimens identified as P. bufo by Jacobi (1907) are considered P. bergi as outlined above.
DISTRIBUTION. The species has been reported from Argentina and Bolivia (Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2013; Sanborn & Heath 2014). However, the Bolivian examples are considered to be misidentifications of P. bergi here so that P. bufo is now only known from Argentina.
